3 yrs ago me: sooga is CLEARLY the brains behind it all. kohga doesn't do squat. absolutely not.
current me: if kohga dies the yiga will spend a consecutive week screaming crying and throwing up until eventually sooga takes the reins and gets them to focus on avenging kohga... but under the mask he's also a crying mess. the yiga clan will implode without kohga.

re: usurping kohga rumor:
ive changed my mind on this one. a rumor may exist of sooga being the heir to take up the yiga banana throne after kohga if kohga ever dies (which is impossible) but it is not desirable for anyone in this equation.
everybody, sooga included, would be devastated by the loss of kohga and no one thinks twice regarding his leadership. sooga would probably threaten anyone who tried to think twice of kohga’s leadership, tho that is rare bcuz who in the yiga clan would even Dare.
g.anondorf’s threads are piling up so i NEED to get to those tonight but before i do, blue reminded me that i wanted to discuss stupid rumors the y.iga have accumulated about s.ooga. are they real? are they fake? is there a single grain of truth to them? no one really knows, but those who tell these rumors absolutely stand by their belief that there is truth to it (even just a little bit! even if they exaggerated the whole thing!).
to prove his worth to the k.ohga before their current master, the father of k.ohga, s.ooga single-handedly went and killed a lynel at age fifteen. or was it fourteen? perhaps sixteen even? the age fluctuates but remains in the early-ish teens. often they drive the point home that he had brought in the head of the lynel (was it red-maned, silver-maned? at the discovery of malice lynels the y.iga were quick to claim it was that, too) to prove he had done it, drenched in its blood.
he had an extra pinky finger on his right hand, but cut it off himself to better wield his katanas. or was it a thumb? either way, s.ooga most certainly did it himself. the age at which he did it is murky, but all can agree he did it with a dagger his mother gifted him and didn’t even shed a single tear or make a single sound during the process.
he has a severe banana allergy. because why else would he not partake in bananas with the same ferocity as the rest of them?? (the truth is that he finds them fine but not overwhelmingly great, and on their own they are rather… boring. prefers them in addition to other foods/mixed into something.)
descended from a line of giants. to explain how absolutely huge s.ooga is, of course! none of the y.iga save for the k.ohga line are aware that s.ooga’s father is a sh.eikah man still back in k.akariko, and conspire that kita, his y.iga mother, eloped with a giant, who mysteriously died before she arrived back to the y.iga with her son in tow.
his reputation is so fierce even monsters steer clear of him. this does have a visible grain of truth to it–though is it because of his prowess and size, or due to the calamity controlling the minds of the beasts to know allies from foes? the y.iga never have had too much trouble with the local monsters, but they still like to attribute it to how fearsome s.ooga is.
s.ooga has had exactly three perfect opportunities to usurp k.ohga but is so loyal to their leader he never seized them. every y.iga worth their salt knows s.ooga is the real brains behind their whole operation, but everyone is likewise in agreement that they would be sad if k.ohga were to be felled on account of his charisma and familial nature with them bringing the clan together. it doesn’t stop the rumors from spreading of k.ohga’s insecurities regarding s.ooga’s obvious talent kept only in check by position alone, and the unseen potential s.ooga bears to truly lead them on account of his steadfast loyalty to the k.ohga line.
s.ooga is the true wielder of the master sword. … because he’s such a talented swordsman! frankly, the y.iga aren’t entirely aware of what the master sword is all about, and don’t realize that it doesn’t mean an incredible proficiency with a blade, but is drawn to the hero who shall seal the darkness. safe to say, those who truly believed this were miffed when link claimed the blade as the rightful owner.

not even his master's assurances could soothe the blademaster's self-disgust. he would need to double--no, triple his training. his efforts were nothing if it meant the cost of their master's life, and within the solitary confines of his mind, he could do nothing but admonish himself. what was his purpose in life if not to be the sacrificial lamb that master kohga needed? why live if only to be a failure?
twisting down his mental spiral, just before sooga could have struck the bottom, he was brought back. not a movement was made, no indication of acknowledgement of the tap of a finger on his mask, but it was enough to recalibrate him, force him to mentally pull himself up by his bootstraps. now was far from the time for drowning in self-loathing.
rising from his kneel, he stood at attention, studying kohga as he spoke. glancing between the unveiled item of value he had nicked off of the sheikah prior to their abrupt departure and kohga himself, sooga was silent, contemplative.
"i can have the research team look further into that, master kohga," he offered with a tilt of his head to the scroll held aloft. "but first, your arm."
there was no hiding the injury from keen eyes, and sooga, with immeasurable patience for his master, both looked to kohga for permission and instruction, never one to cross the line into disobedience. much as he may insist upon kohga's well-being being paramount, there was only so far he could go.
"i already sent notice back to the base to prepare for your arrival."
" At ease, Sooga, " Kohga places a hand upon his right hand's shoulder, giving it a reassuring squeeze. " We were in a bit of a tough pickle back there. Besides, you're way more reliable than some Zonai device. Never know when those charges'll go out when you least expect it. I can always count on you, " the chief ends with a playful tap to Sooga's mask. " And you were on time for once, heheh. "
He's fine. Mostly. Kohga sighs, glancing at the tear along his arm, pressing his hand to the wound to ease the bleeding ( nothing Sooga needed to worry himself any more over ) before he scrambles off the ground to survey the area below in search of any scouts that may have trailed after them.

" Seems... " and it pains him to admit this beneath grit teeth and a hiss, " We've underestimated those fools. " How had they been so blind to the Sheikah's mounting strength across the years, even with spies planted among them ? Did those peace-loving weaklings truly have it in them to.... no, of course they did; neither schisms of the Sheikah had ever truly forgotten their roots. The shadows of the Hylians, with their history of covert operations and underhanded tactics to decimate all those who might oppose the Royal Family as quietly as possible. Even content with groveling and lapping at royal boots for any scrap of approval, it appeared those Sheikah had not entirely abandoned their legacy. Kohga had to give them that, yet it made things all the more difficult for the Yiga.
" Well, no matter, " with a flick of his good arm, Kohga reveals a scroll hidden beneath his sleeve. " I was quick enough to nab this doodad before things got too spicy. Think it's correspondence between what remains of the Royal Guard and the Sheikah... "

"are you alright, master kohga?"
escape had been a narrow thing. while undoubtedly the master would have been able to flee on his own, in the heat of the moment, and with enemies approaching on all sides, sooga had felt no other choice than to intervene. there had been too much risk, far too many variables to be managed, and the sheikah had been sharpening their teeth in wait for the opportunity to sink them into kohga. even if it meant punishment, he could not permit kohga to linger in a situation that would endanger his life.
kneeling before his rescued lord, sooga bowed his head, apologetic.
"i apologize for removing you from combat without your express permission, master kohga. i fear the sheikah have grown wise to our movements, hence why they overwhelmed us so quickly."
a mental note was penned to have the recent footsoldiers inducted vetted. it was never too great a precaution to ensure they did not have a spy in their midst.

"she will."
disgusted and hateful of the hyrulean royal family as he was... pity always struck him when he thought of her. nothing short of a tool, a pawn, she had no agency, no mouth through which to speak through--she was nothing but an echo chamber for king edric's own words. in a perfect world, somehow, they could coerce her to take flight and join their cause, but the little bird's cage was far too sturdy, and their resources better delegated elsewhere.
that, and he could not allow his pity for her to overtake his sense of duty. it was a dangerous thing to nurture, and thus, he banished it from his mind, forcibly thinking instead of his master's wants and will, as kohga's desires overtook any of his own.
besides that, it was difficult to dwell upon lost causes when kohga's hand settled upon his shoulder. her touch was electric, rewarding in an indescribable way. sooga felt the same simplistic satisfaction of having served her well the same as he had at his indoctrination, and he lifted his head, expression the definition of loyal beneath the mask.
"of course, master kohga."
slowly, he rose. obedient and quiet as he listened, nodding in confirmation. of course--he would never dare to take away the glory of the final kill from his master. she deserved the satisfaction of ripping out the heart of the traitorous king, and he would ensure that not a single one of his footsoldiers would think twice of taking her thunder. the yiga clan's power would be made evident in the single moment of her victory, and it was master kohga who would lead hyrule to a new era. that he fully believed in.
awaiting to be dismissed to carry out his orders, it was good that his face was covered by his mask. reflexively, a brow arched in question at kohga's hesitant, quiet question, unexpected and unprepared for.
"... the servants are nervous," quietly sooga said, speaking now not from reports fed in from a number of footsoldiers, but from his own time in the castle, guised as a guard. "they suspect that the king has reason for this over-the-top display beyond a mere birthday. there are whisperings that he intends to announce something."
but, rumors were often that--rumors. he saw no purpose in reporting of gossip to his master.
"but that is based off of their own concerns. i saw no factual evidence for what they spoke of."
as for the absence of the yiga, the defective side of the sheikah...
his gaze turned elsewhere, the mask hiding his deflection.
"they say that lady impa and a small group from the village will be in attendance," he added. "there has been much gossip surrounding such. the people wonder if king edric will make her speak of the yiga."
a tournament, of all things. she had attended many in her youth, standing dutifully by as young upstarts & old dogs clashed in the lists below, listening to the thunderous applause of hyrulean nobility as it drowned out the splintering of lances, the cries of pain from the maimed & wounded. they had been ostentatious things, a show of power & luxury, & dangerously archaic, the king refusing every offer the sheikah had made to provide the competitors with safer weapons, steadier mounts. in edric’s name, it would be beautiful, opulent, & entirely inappropriate. was not the kingdom still bleeding from the great battle ? it had been almost seven years since the day of the black sun, but still, her scouts relayed news to her of towns left to go to ruin, farmland overgrown & useless, & brought with them lost souls willing to pledge themselves to her cause, having been left in the cold by the man they had once called king. a tournament, even now ; what else could have been expected from such a vicious, selfish child of a man ?
beneath the mask, kohga’s lip curled in disgust, but she listened attentively to sooga’s report, considered carefully the implications of his words. the so – called king of her memory had always been a paranoid wreck, flanked by scores of soldiers, jumping at shadows, & conjuring endless enemies from the air, but his desire for the love & attention of his people, too, had been clear to all ; the stench of desperation had always rolled off him in waves during social engagements, as he struggled to make himself a figure worthy of adoration, & failed every time. perhaps it would be enough to make him relax his guard, just slightly, & give them an opening.
❛ the princess will be by his side, won’t she ? ❜ a rhetorical question ; edric had hidden behind the girl since the moment of her birth, his divine shield, his relation to her being the only thing to justify his position, & he clung to her as a drowning man would to driftwood, happy to push her under so long as he remained afloat. that poor girl, she still thought, even now. death would be kinder than enduring another moment in that tyrant’s household. ❛ collateral damage is unavoidable in situations such as this. a pity, ❜
her arms, crossed over her chest as she listened to sooga’s report, parted at last, & she touched a hand to his shoulder ; beneath the unblinking eye of the mask, she smiled down, grateful as ever to have been blessed with such a dedicated soldier.
❛ rise, sooga. you’ve done so well for me, as ever. we’ll make preparations. send ahead your most trusted footsoldiers. have them secure us lodgings, weapons, armour, put forward fake names for the mélee & the jousts. have you ever been to one of these tourneys before ? you would be surprised the damage a stray splinter or a thrown sword can do. i saw a lady in the stands lose an eye once, all in the name of merriment, ❜
❛ you & i will take the lead on this mission, ❜ she was no coward, as the king of hyrule was a coward ; she would not send a soldier, a child, to do her dirty work for her. she wanted to be there to savour the fear he would feel in his final moments, & watch the last of the light die in his eyes. ❛ the king is my target, & mine alone. no – one else is to make the attempt on him. make sure they understand that, ❜
it should have been the end of the conversation. instead, kohga hesitated.
❛ how was it, the castle, the atmosphere ? i can’t imagine they’re all as enthusiastic as that imbecile for such a celebration … do they feel our absence ? do they speak of us ? ❜

"my lady."
knelt upon the sandy stone, sooga's head hung low. his subservience came above all else, his sense of duty extinguishing any kind of pride. to his subordinates, he was indomitable, a leader in the absence of their master. to kohga, he was whatever tool she saw fit. today, he was her master of spies, a prying eye into the gaping maw of the castle and its cruel occupants.
"reports have come saying that there will be a knights' tourney to celebrate the king's birthday within the next few weeks."
hyrule loved its festivals. sooga could not remember a single day in which he had not heard of some festival being planned--the 100 year festival for the minish, the new year festivals, dozens upon dozens of tournaments celebrating soldiers becoming proper knights. this was simply one more in a calendar of thousands--but perhaps, that could be leveraged.
"he will be front and center during the celebration," he continued quietly, his deep, throaty voice monotone in spite of the treachery he was to utter. "the soldiers will be preoccupied with a parade for him. it is, perhaps, the most vulnerable he will be this year."
