"Oh, for the love of ..." Tugging at his jacket tales, Jefferson backhanded any remaining tendrils sending them deep within the unforgiving overgrowth, ignoring the yelp of complaint; whilst he took a step back onto the yellow beaten path. Wincing as a stray pebble lodged itself uncomfortably into the heel of his foot.

"Don't talk to the flowers. They twist everything you say," He began with a huff, raising a finger as if it would add further enthesis. "Avoid the bushes, 'cause as you just witnessed, no bugger feeds them and more importantly, don't go anywhere alone. Understand?"

Twisting, his coat fanned out with a flourish before falling into rhythm with his quickened step.

"Wonderland," he tagged on stiffly, an after thought really, answering the usually anticipated and, in this case, unasked question without as much as a courteous backwards glance.

They were bordering the cusp of the whispering wood which would lead them towards Tulgey Woods. [Where the hatter lived.] The difference between each location was helpfully pointed out with the abundance of signposts and the yellowing path.

The Caterpillar had once tried making it a selling point 'Dorothy Gale of Kansas' was ere. Worked a treat too.

Until one of the tweedles slipped up and professed they'd got more than a little carried away with so paint. Funny, until a similar thing happened with queen's roses and heads began to roll...

Ignoring the echoing groan from the retreating foliage, Jefferson reached up to flick and tap the rim of his hat, uttering something about horsey to F6 to a sleepy-eyed bush baby poking its head from underneath; the sigh, although near inaudible, carried some understanding before it slipped back.

Grunting in satisfaction, Jefferson urged the wanderer to hurry. "We just need to get over this ridge, and I'll tell you everything you want to know."

I wanted to expand on this to include the newly added background plot [ details can be found on the pinned post under 'about Jefferson' ] Killian outside the Wonderland plot is a steward assigned to Jefferson's ward and someone he has slowly opened himself up enough to trust. He's the one that has been put in charge of administrating his medications and calming him down when he's above his usually calm baseline and reached crisis.

Jefferson acquaintance headcanon

My take on Jefferson is heavily inspired by the one from ONCE (portrayed by Seb Stan) and back then, I was a huge madhook shipper despite the two never actually meeting. So, it shouldn't come to any surprise, Killian Jones making an appearance in my verse| take.

The two have met once or twice in passing and on one occasion the two bonded over some ale and shrooms over at the bar [The Hookah] where Cheshire works. The pair appear to have gotten on quite well.

Jefferson headcanons

He smokes roll ups| joints (using flower petals for the paper) his older self smokes using a pipe

He drinks magic mushrooms, blending them with other ingredients to make an array of different teas so most of the time he's hallucinating or coming down from a high. He struggles with his reality and in fairness Wonderland is a fucker of a place.

Wears rings, stolen from found treasures. Always wearing a signet ring on the small finger if his right hand with a letter A etched into it.

His attire of choice would be described as steampunk by our standards. It's fairly the norm in Wonderland though Jefferson's clothes do reveal his worth. Even if it's mostly stolen or self made.

He has a bush baby ⛥ (alternative to the more famously known dormouse) who sleeps under his hat or perches in his shoulder. It likes to run across his outstretched arms. And leaps to people they're familiar with. (Loves Cheshire)

In his younger years was quite the varied metal singer (thinking Dan Vasc)

Often gets called Madz hates it but it stuck and everyone calls him it regardless.

⛥ the bush baby replacing the door mouse is a bit of an upgrade for my twist on the Hatter but also a personal nod to ST: DS9 cause they remind me so much of the Vorta who are such an awesome and, underappreciated, alien race.

[ So what's the deal with the Catapiller? ]

So, my take of the character is loosely based off the Catapiller featured in Once Upon A TIme in Wonderland, where he likes to make deals. I had the idea to expand this slightly and have him as a devious strip club owner [ The Hookah! ] bordering towards some kind of mob boss.

Cheshire does work for him but strictly as waiting staff and occasional entertainment organiser.

But there is an additional level to his cruelty, which if you have the money, and the stomach, you can witness with your own eyes. On a hidden upper level, he has his own, developing, zoo ( think along the lines of a human zoo )

[ The background plot in progress for my younger version of Jefferson . ]

Jefferson is in a psychiatric ward due to his recent diagnosis of depersonalization-derealization disorder. Where he believes he's the infamous mad hatter, trudging his way through Wonderland. He shares a room with another troubled soul whom he charmingly dubbed Cheshire, due to them always smiling. (They have scars either side of their mouth where a smile was carved, they'd done it to themselves in a fit of anger) Each afternoon the pair would raise a paper cup, with tepid tea, to celebrate each day they were sober.

Each time 'Cheshire' was put into solitary, for playing practical jokes and answering back, Jefferson imaged that the Catapiller (in reality the head nurse) had places them in a zoo for on lookers to gaze and laugh at.
