Its been said before and I'll say it again:

The Heathers musical fundamentally misunderstands the character of Heather McNamara.

In the movie, she is not a tragedy. She is someone whose entire life and her social status revolved around Heather Chandler. She now has no one to circle around, she is no different than Karen besides the fact that she is actively a "meangirl" even if only following Chandler's lead.

She is sadden by the death of Chandler because, and, this is a quote, she won't have anyone to drive her to school anymore.

While Duke actively wants the queen bee title and engages in the shcool's hierarchy. Mc.Namara is comfortable, and does not want to be anything more than the support for Chandler

Also this. In the show neither Camila or Darius take on a parental role.

Darius is someone who participated on the systematic abuse Hunter went through. Camila is a stressed mom providing emergency housing to 5 refugee kids.

Camila it's just not prepared to help Hunter in any way that isn't helping him process and offer support and stability. To just be there after a panic attack or a sudden burts of rage, to correct and to help him empathize.

And honestly? Even that will be pushed away by Hunter. Because Hunter isn't a 14 year old, he is 16/17, he will feel both small and so old, he'll want the support and hate how it will make him feel. He was treated as an adult from a young age, he was a soilder for God's sake, he won't just mush out a month after he leaves a literal military cult where he was rasied in.

And Darius? Gosh, Darius was literally part of that treatment. He peretuated the organized abuse. Is he making up for it? Sure. But still, what he can do is even less than what Camila can do because denuncing or trying to help Hunter rebuild himself is going to cause comfrontation. I don't think that Darius can't hold a parental role in Hunter's life, I just think it's inherently more complicated than it will ever be with Camila.

Really pisses me off when fanfic writers hyper infantilize Hunter.

Of course, he is just a teenager, he shouldn't be going through all that shit. But he isn't a baby, don't treat him like a baby because he has trauma, treat him like a traumatized teenager.

Teenagers with trauma aren't breaking down over every interaction. They are not projecting every single thing they went through onto others. They are not 'pwoor lwittle bwbys🥺'

Give me anger, give me grief, and give me real, raw feelings. Not just 'mama Camila and Dadrius to rescure'. I get the appeal. it's comforting, I get it, I really do. But this view has made Fanon Hunter a complete mess.

I've only seen this done right a few times. Where Hunter's trauma is a part of him but not all that there is to him. Because trauma is never all that there is to someone, even if it feels like that for that person sometimes.

This is also so far away from the show. Hunter is awkward, nervous, shy, childish, and discovering himself. What he isn't is a ball of panic attacks or just one massive trauma ball. Like how many of you are depicting him. He lost depth? Sure, time cuts. But it's still there. It wouldn't be different.

I get this is a hot take probs lmao so I'm just gonna throw this at the end: You write him however you like, I'm just speaking my thoughts. If you were like how I described after a traumatic experience and are projecting, that's valid. If you see it represented like that brings you comfort, that's also valid. I just think we need to acknowledge how this way of depicting trauma can affect our views in caharathers or how we perceive cptsd especially on teens (which doesn't make it bad, because trauma reactions are a sectrum, im just saying).
