Extraordinary photos: The birth and partition of India
The Partition of India saw the carving up of the Indian subcontinent along sectarian lines, the massacre of millions and the rending asunder of a country into two, making it one of mankind’s greatest tragedies.
While India celebrated its much-awaited freedom on August 15, 1947, after being subjugated by the British for close to two centuries, no one could forget the enormous human cost that we paid for it.
On the occasion of India’s 70th Independence Day on August 15, 2016, we bring you some exceptional photos from that momentous era – from Partition to Freedom.

MP chief minister slammed over ‘flood Olympics’ photo
Tumblr media
What started off as a display of concern for the people of his flood-affected state by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan ended in him being widely ridiculed on social media. The MP chief minister was visiting affected areas and families of Madhya Pradesh, who have been adversely hit by non-stop torrential downpour leading to over a 100 villages in Rewa and Satna district being virtually devastated by floods on Sunday. However, his efforts to survey the scene and help people came to a nought when a photograph showing policemen carrying him through ankle-deep muddy water while inspecting the MP floods went viral on social media.
Chauhan, who was is crisp white trousers and white shoes, hadn’t even managed to get a blob of mud on his pristine clothing and was carried aloft through muddy water, followed by his policemen, party workers and government officials.
The photo shows him smiling, with his arms around two policemen who are carrying him.
No sooner did the photo go viral on Twitter that people started to ridicule him, lambasting him for his insensitivity.
Here are some reactions from Twitterati over the MP chief minister’s photo:

India loves PV Sindhu: Social media goes crazy after her
Tumblr media
PV Sindhu. Photo: AP
When Pusarla Venkata Sindhu won a gold medal at the 2012 Asian junior badminton championships, her cricketing hero Sachin Tendulkar presented her with a car.
One can only guess at the reception the 21-year-old player will receive when she returns into the arms of 1.3 billion Indians after becoming the country's most successful female Olympian with her silver-medal performance in Rio.
The fact that she had been beaten 19-21 21-12 21-15 by Spanish world number one Carolina Marin in the final mattered little for a country that until Friday had won a solitary bronze at these Games.
The Hyderabadi got a taste of what her life will be from now on when she was pulled and prodded as she made her way through a throng of reporters desperate to hang on to every word coming out of her mouth.
"I'm really, really happy because my ultimate goal was to get a medal at the Olympics," she said as she clung on to the silver medal around her neck.
"I thought it would be a gold but never mind, it's still a silver. I never thought I would make it to here... overall I am happy."
"I am the first Indian to get a silver medal at these Olympics so that's great to hear and I'm really very proud of my country," she added.
"This medal was important to inspire Indians as there are many players coming up who in the future will succeed." (Text: Reuters & Agencies)

Sindhu, the two-time bronze medallist at World Championship, registered an emphatic 21-19, 21-10 victory in the thrilling semi-final contest that lasted 49 minutes to become only the second woman player in badminton to win an Olympic medal after Saina Nehwal.

Sakshi wins India’s first medal at Rio and Twitter explodes
Tumblr media
Photo: Reuters
India finally won its first medal at the ongoing Rio Olympics as wrestler Sakshi Malik clinched a bronze in the women's freestyle 58kg event after defeating Asian No. 1 Aisuluu Tynybekova of Kyrgyztan 8-5 here on Thursday.
Although the 23-year-old was trailing 0-5 against her Kyrgyzstani opponent after the first period, she bounced back in style to hand India its fourth bronze medal in wrestling in the Olympic history.
With the win, Malik has now become only the fourth Indian woman athlete to win an Olympic medal after Karnam Malleshwari, Mary Kom and Saina Nehwal.
Her victory came like a breath of fresh air for 1.3 billion Indians and people took to social media to congratulate the Rohtak girl. Check it out:

No sooner had the dust settled on the row over the detention of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan at the Los Angeles airport, than yet another shocking case of what can be termed as racial profiling came to light when Indian sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan's visa to the United Kingdom was rejected on Friday.

The world’s most and least peaceful nations
Even as mankind reels under horrifying terrorist attacks the world over, there are certain pockets on planet Earth that still offer peace and quiet.
The Institute of Economics annually produces the Global Peace Index that assesses the levels of peace in 163 independent states and territories.
It takes into account factors like terrorism, political security and safety, and perception of crime while coming to a conclusion.
The 2016 rankings of the Global Peace Index are now out. Contrary to popular belief Europe remains the most peaceful continent. Even North America, Australia, South America and the Asia-Pacific region were relatively stable.
The report, however says the World Economic Forum, reveals that 81 countries have become more peaceful, while the situation in 79 countries has worsened.
West Asia and North Africa saw peace declining the most, with Syria being ranked as the world's least peaceful country.
Despite the ghastly killing of 19 people in Japan early Tuesday morning, the nation is ranked as the 9th most peaceful country.
Here's the list of the top 5 least peaceful and 10 most peaceful nations. We also indicate what India and Pakistan rank on the Global Peace Index score (the lower the score, the more peaceful the nation):

SC allows rape survivor to abort 24-week-old foetus
Tumblr media
In a landmark judgement, the Supreme Court on Monday granted liberty to a rape survivor to terminate her 24-week-old abnormal foetus.
The court ruled that disallowing the victim to terminate her pregnancy would put her life at risk.
The 26-year-old had challenged the constitutional validity of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act that which prohibits termination of pregnancy after 20 weeks even if there is a fatal risk to the mother and foetus.
A medical board was set up at King Edward Memorial College and Hospital in Mumbai on Friday to examine the condition of an alleged rape survivor who wanted to abort her foetus.
A bench, comprising Justice J S Khehar and Justice Arun Mishra, had directed the medical board to examine the woman and submit its report back on Monday.
The court had on Wednesday last accepted the matter for urgent hearing after senior advocate Colin Gonsalves said that in the present case, the life of the woman was in grave danger.
The petitioner had said that her ex-fiancé had raped her on the false promise of marriage. The foetus suffers from anencephaly (a serious birth defect in which a baby is born without parts of the brain and skull) but the doctors had refused to abort it since it will be illegal.

I quit Rajya Sabha seat as I was told to stay away from Punjab: Navjot Sidhu
Tumblr media
Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu, at his first press conference since his resignation from the Rajya Sabha, on Monday slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party saying that the reason he quit was because he was told that to stay away from Punjab.
“I was told, ‘Sidhu, Punjab se door raho," he claimed, adding, “how can I turn my face away from Punjab? Punjab is my home, I cannot leave Punjab.”
While Sidhu did not mention during his press conference that he had quit the Bharatiya Janata Party or that he was joining the Aam Aadmi Party, he said that he was told to contest the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Kurukshetra.
“How can I abandon the people who voted for me? Have been told to stay away not once, but three, four times. At least, tell me my crime. Party is not above Punjab. Sidhu will be there for whatever is good for Punjab. Always wanted to serve Punjab and Amritsar,” the fiery Sidhu added.

Chennai dog thrower gets bail; 'Bhadra’ survives, but crippled for life
Tumblr media
Photo, courtesy: Shravan Krishan Facebook page
Two Chennai medical students – Gautam Sudarshan and Ashish Paul – were on Wednesday granted bail by a court in Sriperumbudur, after having been arrested following nationwide outrage over the merciless torturing of a helpless dog.
A few days ago a gut-wrenching video surfaced online showing Gautam grinning away while throwing a terrified dog off the terrace of a three-storey building in Chennai. His ‘heroic deed’ was shot on camera by his friend, Ashish Paul.
yahoo
Both are final year medical students of Madha Medical College, Kundrathur, Chennai.

— Karthik Dhandapani (@iamkarthikd)
July 4, 2016
The entire nation went into a tizzy as the video went viral and people demanded that the man in the video be arrested for his inhuman, barbaric act. It took the police a few days to first identify the culprits and then arrest them. The two culprits were absconding when the cops first went to arrest them.
The two are from Tirunelvelli and Kanyakumari and they finally surrendered after the police contacted their families.
Miraculously, however, the dog was found alive by some rescuers, who said that despite the fact that its legs and spine had been fractured in the fall from the 3-storey building, it was ‘wagging its tail’ to see them.
The animal is being treated at the Madras Veterinary College, but the doctors say that the extent of her injuries are so severed that she will be crippled for life. She will require at least 2 months to recover.
One of the rescuer, Shravan Krishnan, who is an animal rights activist and founder of Hotel for Dogs, had posted the entire episode on his Facebook page.
Shravan also wrote that they have named the hapless dog ‘Bhadra’, according to a Quint report.
She's been named Bhadra #bhadrathewarrior pic.twitter.com/fMOQ9YmKaQ
— Karthik Dhandapani (@iamkarthikd)
July 6, 2016
The Blue Cross of India too had launched a campaign on Facebook to nab the perpetrators.
It had posted on its FB page: ‘The entire nation is shocked after watching the video of a poor little dog being thrown to death from the terrace of a building. Our friends Antony, Jennifer, and Shravan have been very swift in taking action against them and lodged a complaint with Chennai city police commissioner, with video evidences. The police commissioner had ordered for a quick action on the complaint. With the help of the cyber crime police the accused have been identified as Gautam Sudarshan and Asish Paul, both final year medical students of Madha Medical College, Kundrathur, Chennai.’
‘With the help of Kundrathur police the scene of crime has been identified but the two culprits have been on the run. Anybody who has information on them please come forward to help the police with nabbing them and bringing them to justice,’ the post said.
Hours after the dog who they flung from a Chennai roof was found, the two medical students who tortured her - and filmed her hurtling several storeys to the ground - were arrested and then released on bail in Tamil Nadu.

A Delhi-Chandigarh one-way air ticket for Rs 99,000!
By N R Manjula
Tumblr media
Haryana’s violent Jat quota protests that crippled air, road and rail traffic and also resulted in the death of at least 12 people, has had a huge impact on the common man and the nation.
And this has ‘helped’ set new records in airfares.
While private and public property worth hundreds of crores of rupees was destroyed by miscreants, even the supply of water to the national capital has been badly affected.
With the BJP government in Haryana buckling down to the protesters’ demands and promising the Jats to extend to them the reservation they have been demanding, the protesters have lifted blockade from parts of Haryana.
Yet the effect of the protests has been quite widespread.
There’s another spillover effect that people are experiencing. Air fares have skyrocketed on all the routes connecting Delhi with Chandigarh, Amritsar and Jaipur because flying the only way beleaguered people can travel.
An Economic Times report said that on Sunday, the ‘last minute’, one-way economy class airfare for the Chandigarh-Delhi Jet Airways flight topped a jaw-dropping Rs 99,000!
Airfares between Amritsar and Delhi also touched Rs 23,000.
Meanwhile, Air India has said in a press release that it will provide relief to stranded passengers. The national carrier has thus decided to limit airfares at just below Rs 4,000.
The one-way economy class airfare between Delhi and Chandigarh on Air India is Rs 3,339, while it is Rs 3,960 for the Delhi-Amritsar flight.
Tumblr media
Newsreports said that a 45-minute flight between Delhi and Chandigarh costs Rs 17,299 on Jet Airways'.
Spice Jet's fares are no less. The cost of the ticket is Rs 15,570.
Indigo is charging Rs 14,400 for the Chandigarh-Delhi flight.
Air India is, surprisingly, the only ‘cheaper’ option, but reports suggest that all tickets on the airline have been sold till Thursday, February 25.
