HOW TO USE A FACE MASK CORRECTLY (STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE)
It is advisable and mandatory in India to wear a mask while stepping out of the house. The Face mask often helps individuals feel protected and reassured but the question of the hour is can a surgical/N95 face mask keep you from transmitting the virus or getting in contact with infection? Yes, if worn correctly.
We come across many people who wear the mask just for namesake, sometimes it does not cover the nose or worn correctly in both the ears, while some people tend to, constantly keep touching the mask.
The face filter cannot be ill-fitted, it is the one tool that is utilized, for preventing the spread of disease. Facemasks help limit and control the spread of germs. When someone talks, coughs or sneezes, they may release tiny drops into the air that could infect others.
Various masks come in different colours and styles but, it is crucial and recommended to use the face mask that matches international standards. At The Mask Lab, our masks are manufactured in a cleanroom environment that prevents the introduction of additional particulate matter to our products.
We also adhere to practices that prevent cross-contamination between medical staff and patient’s wounds.
If you want to shield yourself from Covid-19, especially now that the lockdown is over and people are resuming work and daily activities, you must follow the correct way of putting the mask on, taking them off and discarding them.
Learn more on how to go about with it through this insightful read.
How to Put on a Face Filter
Step 1: Before opening your mask, ensure washing your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water, or you could use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Step 2: Open the mask and check if there are any tears or broken loops.
Step 3: Ensure that the mask is CE Certified and matches the International Quality Standards.
Step 4: Hold the mask by the ear loops and place each elastic-loop over each ear.
Step 5: Pull the bottom of the mask over your mouth and chin.
Step 6: Make sure that the mask fits as it must not be too loose.
Step 7: Once the mask is secure, do not touch it.
Step 8: If the mask gets damp or soiled, replace it with a new one.
Always remember, the medical-grade surgery mask and the N95 mask are both to be disposed of after one-time use. Avoid washing and reusing as they may not be efficient enough.
Here is a step-by-step video demonstration by the World Health Organisation on how to wear a medical mask.
Once you are home, take off your mask carefully and be careful not to touch your eyes, nose, and mouth when removing and wash your hands immediately after disposing of the mask.

Wear a Mask: COVID-19 Survivors Urge People to Protect Themselves

With 2.84 million COVID-19 cases in India, we all know someone who has been infected by this virus, and we have lost many brave individuals to it. India has been fighting Coronavirus with early identification testing, surveillance testing, enforcing the use of masks, contact tracing via the Aarogya Setu App, along with a focus on timely clinical treatments and constant follow-ups with patients. Countries like the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Morocco, Turkey, and Germany have made wearing masks in public compulsory.
What cements the importance of wearing masks is the fact that patients who have recovered from COVID-19 also emphasize the use of masks. To understand measures better, we looked at what some of the survivors say about what they went through.
The top concern for a lot of these survivors was their breathing. The most prevalent symptoms mentioned are chest discomfort and a bad cough. Being in and out of sedation, on a ventilator, and in a hospital was scary. It takes over 72 hours to feel lucid again, and then the road to recovery begins. Some people are left with permanent organ damage, and wearing a mask is a small step that helps prevent such health risks.
Survivors say that they have seen first-hand that if due safety and precautionary measures are not taken, it could lead to the spread of the virus. Did you know that if precautionary measures are not followed even by one person, it could end up being transmitted to many others and prove to be a life-threatening issue? One may feel like they do not have the virus, but it could be an asymptomatic diagnosis, and can lead to a person infecting hundreds of others out there only because they did not cover their nose and mouth when stepping out.
Finally, survivors emphasize that avoiding strenuous activity, large gatherings, and wearing a mask are extremely important. Many survivors state that when people interact with them, there is anxiety about coming in contact with the virus, to be free from these thoughts, it is best that everyone wear an N95 Mask with 3-4 layers of protection when meeting others.
Almost all the survivors stress the intensity of this pandemic. We all have to live with this virus in the coming year. Building one's immunity, and wearing the right mask is key to the issue at hand. It is imperative that we take the right measures to protect ourselves, our families, and our neighbours and focus on the bigger picture.
At The Mask Lab, we have been ensuring large supplies of Medical Grade Surgical Masks and N95 Grade Masks that are designed specially to meet all requirements. These masks not only protect the wearer from coming in contact with the virus but also work as a reminder to the wearer to not touch their nose or mouth, which could accidentally lead to the transfer of the virus or bacteria after having touched a contaminated space. Even Coronavirus survivors have stressed that a mask provides a high level of protection from airborne particulate matter.
The Medical Grade Surgical Mask from The Mask Lab meets the current ASTM standards, while our N95 Grade Mask is designed to capture over 99 percent of very small particles. It also provides 4 layers of protection and a high level of hygiene that is needed for patients avoiding or battling the virus.

Did you know that the average human touches their face at least 23 times in an hour? A mask acts as a reminder to the wearer to not accidentally touch their mouth or nose after having touched a contaminated surface. Masks act as an invaluable hygienic compliance tool by helping to prevent the transfer of viruses and bacteria.
Read on to find out what to look for in a mask, and how single-use, disposable face masks are the most effective against virus particles such as those found in the Coronavirus.
1) Medical Grade Surgical Mask
- A Medical Grade Surgical Mask is fluid-resistant, disposable, and comes with a loose-fitting device that creates a physical barrier between the mouth and nose of the wearer and their surroundings.
- Surgical Masks are composed of 3 layers of non-woven fabric. The outer layer is waterproof, and protects from liquid sprayed at the wearer, while the inner layer absorbs the moisture released by the wearer.
- A good mask will also have pleats, which will allow the wearer to expand the mask and cover the area from nose to chin.
- A Medical Grade Surgical Mask also has a filter layer in the middle. High-quality masks use a melt-blown polypropylene fabric that serves as a barrier against microbes from entering or exiting the mask. This is the most important layer of the mask.
- To offer comfort, it also comes with earloops and a nose strip to ensure there are no gaps on either side of the mask.
- The Mask Lab’s Medical Grade Surgical Mask filters up to 98% of bacteria while also meeting the ASTM standards.
2) N95 Respirator/Mask
- An N95 Respirator provides a filter efficiency of 95% or more against particulate aerosols.
- These masks are rated as N, R, or P according to their level of protection against oil aerosols.
- Respirators are rated as ‘N’ if they are non-resistant to oil.
- Respirators that are rated as ‘R’ if they are somewhat resistant to oil.
- Respirators are rated as ‘P’ if they are strongly oil-resistant and oil proof.
- These masks have been designed to achieve a very tight facial fit to prevent air leakage while breathing and are made from a layer of electrostatically charged and melt-blown material for highly efficient filtration of airborne particles.
- The Mask Lab’s N95 Respirator/Mask comes with 4 layers of protection. The outer layer of the mask is made of hydrophobic, non-woven polypropylene. The second layer is a support layer that is a spun bond, non-woven fabric. The third layer is the filter layer that consists of an electrostatically charged, melt-blown layer. The final layer of the N95 Mask is the inner layer, which is made of a hydrophilic layer. The objective of this mask is to supply clean breathable air from a compressed air source or filter contaminated air.
These masks are designed to offer a high level of protection against airborne particulate matter such as PM 0.3, PM 2.5, PM 10, dust, allergens, post-combustion particles, germs, shavings, odours, scents, mold, and other airborne contaminants. It is also recommended to be used in a healthcare setting or to protect factory and industrial workers who are exposed to dust and fine particulate matter.
Rest assured, at The Mask Lab, we promise to deliver the highest value of personal protection to ensure your safety as well as that of the people around you.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization both recommend that individuals should wear masks when they are part of a public gathering or even indoors, for their protection. Many people question whether wearing a mask can compromise their well-being or if the mask that they are wearing will interfere with their breathing.

Individuals who are infected with COVID-19 release aerosols when they cough, sneeze, breathe, or talk, with some exertion in the air. As an airborne virus, it can be carried through the air in a viable form. However, the scientific consensus is that the Coronavirus is spread mostly through respiratory droplets that are virus-laden globs of saliva and mucus. Therefore, it is essential to wear a mask, stay away from crowded places or indoor spaces, and also ensure physical distancing.
