Guides for Beginner Witches: Incense Cleansing, Banishing and Warding
Incense is a common tool and ingredient in a witch’s arsenal - commonly used for spellwork, meditation and its relaxing properties. These good smelling sticks of fragrance are also often used in practices for cleansing spaces, warding off negative energies, banishing negative forces and even yes breaking and weakening curses. Let us cover that today!
Incense Cleansing
Incense is commonly used for cleansing purposes as it is a type of smoke cleansing. There are a few different methods for this. For cleansing one’s space, lighting a stick of incense and carefully walking a room with it is probably the most common (please ensure you are using something to catch the ashes). Lighting some incense near an open window and letting it waft through a room or space is the most hands off method, though be sure to keep an eye on it.
For cleansing oneself before or after spellwork place some lit incense, either stick or cone form, upon a table or surface and carefully waft the smoke towards you. Run your hands through the smoke and up your arms. If you have the tool, a hanging incense burner pendant can be a wonderful alternative for cleansing oneself or cleansing another - carefully swing it as it is directed (most come with instructions) around your immediate area or around the other person you are cleansing.
For cleansing one’s tools, crystals and other objects light some incense and run the items through the smoke very similarly to how you would run your hands through it for self cleansing. Be thorough with the object to ensure it is fully cleansed, this should take a few minutes.
Incenses commonly used for cleansing: Benzoin, Citronella, Lavender, Pine, Cedar/Cedarwood, Copal, Dragon’s Blood, Eucalyptus, Jasmine, Lemon, Myrrh, Thyme, Rosemary
Tumblr media
Incense Banishing
Banishing is a bit different than cleansing, while cleansing is removing mild negative energies or unwanted energies to help maintain purity of items, spaces and tools - banishing is the aggressive assertive act of forcefully removing and pushing out unwanted energies, entities and forces. This would include banishing out the baneful magic of others, such as hexes and curses, from yourself, others or objects.
Incense banishing is similar to the process of cleansing though it is much more assertive - when banishing unwanted forces, arm yourself with your incense, stick form or swinging pendulum tool is best. If using a stick for cleansing place it into a jar or container with salt and if possible charcoal - both strong banishing ingredients. Walk the space you are banishing and forcefully and strongly state “I banish you” in a chanting manner but very firmly, while you ensure the smoke of your incense spreads around thoroughly.
If banishing negativity or possible baneful magic from yourself or another, like cleansing use the smoke to ‘bathe’ yourself or the other. While you do this state firmly as many times as you want “I banish you from me/them, I send you away, I push you away and break your ties. I banish thee, I banish thee” or any other chant you feel comfortable doing. Continue this for several minutes preferably.
Incenses commonly used for banishing: Myrrh, Pine, Sage, Sagebrush, Basil, Citronella, Clove, Dragon’s Blood, Fern, Frankincense, Juniper, Mint, Vetivert, Peppermint, Sandalwood, Vervain, Yarrow
Incense Warding
Warding is less assertive than banishment and it is more so putting up barriers and protections to prevent negativity from entering your space or home in the first place. Warding should be done regularly every month or so - maintaining your wards is like maintaining a fence to keep away annoying unwanted neighbors.
For warding, it is a bit more hands off when it comes to incense. You can repeat the walk around method like in cleansing. Though a popular way to ward using incense is to fill a bowl with salt, dried sage and dried rosemary, mix well. Stick your incense stick at an angle to so it doesn’t catch any herbs on fire but so its ashes still fall into the bowl. Light your incense and let it burn down to the stick - warding your space. Repeat this as necessary. This is also a little ‘recipe’ for some warding salts if you wish to stir in the ashes and bottle them.
Incenses commonly used for warding: Citronella, Lavender, Sage, Benzoin, Frankincense, Myrrh, Damar, Rosemary, Ylang Ylang, Peppermint
Incense Safety
Please use incense responsibly! Incense is still using fire and heat, make sure you have an ash catcher or a fireproof dish to catch the ashes and embers in. Never leave incense burning in your home without supervision, do not leave your home unoccupied with lit incense. Keep it away from anything flammable such as fabrics and curtains.
Do not burn incense in rooms with small mammals or birds - it can cause them breathing distress and can cause them serious health concerns! When burning incense around cats or dogs, keep it in a ventilated area with open windows and airflow and do not burn it for too long. If you are using it around cats or dogs, research to ensure the type of incense you are using does not upset or cause negative effects to animals. If your cat or dog has a respiratory issue such as asthma do NOT burn incense around them.
When burning incense for self cleansing or cleansing another, keep your hair tied back. Do not let your hair fall onto the incense at risk of it catching fire or being singed. Do not wear long flowing sleeves or scarves with using incense in this manner.
When disposing of incense, ensure to clean up the ashes if you are outside, do not leave your trash or sticks behind. Ensure your incense has either been thoroughly snuffed out or burned out before disposing. Do not throw away still smoking incense.
For those in apartments or dorms, check your rules and leases - many apartments do not allow the burning of incense. Do not risk losing your deposit or getting in trouble - there are other ways to cleanse, banish and ward without smoke.

✿Eucalyptus✿
Tumblr media
Folk Names: Blue Gum Tree, Stringy Bark Tree, Gum Tree
Gender: Feminine
Planet: Moon
Element: Water
…Origins…
There are over 700 hundred species of Eucalyptus, most of these being natives to Australia.  The generic name is derived from the Greek words ευ (eu) meaning, ‘Well’
…Magickal Uses…
Healing: Eucalyptus is an excellent ingredient in healing remedies & spells. The leaves are used to stuff healing poppets & are carried to maintain good health. Green Candles are used in combination with the Leaves & Pods, which are either included into the wax, or strung around the candle itself, & left to burn out completely to help relieve colds & flus. Eucalyptus Oils are also used for the same purposes, & to clear blocked sinuses & relieve blocked chests & airways, but should not be consumed as it can be toxic when taken internally. Placed underneath the pillow, the Pods are said to protect the sleeper from colds, the immature green pods are also strung around the neck to ease a sore throat. Branches of the Tree are also hung in the room of a sick person to promote recovery & good health.
Protection: Eucalyptus is widely believed to effectively ward off evil and repel enemies. The Leaves are carried on the person or used in protection sachets. The Leaves are also said to help ward off our own personal evils such as addictions & ‘bad habits’
Purification: The Leaves are burned on Charcoal or made into Incense to cleanse & purify an area. The strong, fresh scent also repels insects like fleas, flies & mosquitoes. Leaves are placed around the house to prevent those inside from illness, & to rid the home of unwanted energies.
…Medicinal Uses…
Eucalyptus is a great antiseptic. It has anti-infectious, anti-fungal, & anti-microbial properties that are commonly used in healing remedies to treat such ailments. The oil is used topically to treat bacterial infections & also to help ease muscle pain. As mentioned before it is also a great companion for those suffering with a cold or flu, as it’s strong, fresh aroma will help to clear blocked sinuses & airways.
..Growing & Caring for Eucalyptus…
Plant eucalyptus in mid to late spring or fall, depending on your location and climate, making sure to water the Tree before, & after planting. Most species prefer full sun, & a well draining soil. Some variations of Eucalyptus will do well in potted containers, such species include; E.coccifera, E.vernicosa E.parviflora, E.archeri E.nicholii & E.crenulata. Eucalyptus Trees thrive in a hot environment & don’t like cold climates. Plant your Eucalyptus in a light place indoors, should you live in colder parts of the world.

I haven’t done any beauty or glamour anything yet but I’m so ready to tryyyy!!!!
beauty magic
🌿✨🌼🕊🌱
self care routines are obviously so important, as are nice little treats for yourself; ive definitely been slacking on both so i wanted to brainstorm some spellwork that would help me along, hope this is helpful for anyone else out there looking to get back into the rhythm of things :) little note that about everything here will keep in the fridge for up to 7-10 days, other than the coconut oil which will keep for a good two weeks or so
Tumblr media
[ ‘fresh start’ cleansing body scrub ]
- sea salt
- moon water
- honey
- rosemary
- lemon zest
[ assembly ]
grind together your salt and rosemary, then mix together your water and honey separately and fold into your salt mix, (something like a 2;1 honey to water ratio should be enough water to make it easier to mix but not enough to dissolve the salt) then gently fold in your lemon zest!
- 🍃
[ ‘funk killer’ self love face scrub ]
- sugar
- lavender buds
- rose petals
- thyme
- sunflower oil (olive oil charged in the sun for a bit is a great substitute!)
[ assembly ]
evenly grind together your sugar, lavender, rose petals, and thyme, then fold in a few drops of your oil at a time until it reaches a consistency you’re pleased with
- 🌱
[ ‘bump begone’ after-shave moisturizer ]
- coconut oil
- rosemary
- mint
- lemon balm
- lavender
[ assembly ]
get your coconut oil into a small pot over the lowest heat setting and infuse your herbs for around 10-15 minutes, no longer than 25 minutes and keep a close eye on it! coconut oil tends to set on its own at room temperature but if it’s a bit warm where you are just keep it in the fridge and take it out before use, it’ll begin to emulsify easily into your hands once it warms up from your natural body temp
- 🌿
[ ‘get going’ energy boosting scrub ]
- coffee grounds
- sugar
- cinnamon
- honey
[ assembly ]
gently grind together your coffee and sugar, then add in your cinnamon powder and slowly fold in your honey, if your honey is pretty thick you can thin it out beforehand by in putting it the microwave for about 10 seconds
- 🍃

Localizing Your Practice
Tumblr media
So much witchcraft emphasizes how important it is to honor and work with the Earth, but then teaches us spells with ingredients we basically have to import using locations we don’t have access to. It’s rare to find an existing grimoire or guide book that actually works with where we live. We can still use them, but it doesn’t enhance our connection to our local land, which to many can feel important. Here are some tips for localizing your practice and working with the land you actually live on.
See what nature exists around you. Explore your own backyard with a critical eye. What plants can you actually go and pick yourself? What are those plants associated with? Do you have access to a creek or river? What does your local land actually have on it? If magic correspondences for your local plants haven’t been written about, you may have to do your own research. Example: I grow several plants on my back porch which I can potentially use for magic. There are magnolia trees and rhodedendrons on the grounds of my apartment complex. My parent’s neighbors have chickens in the backyard, so I have access to some feathers when they shed.
Check out local folklore, legends, etc. This is one of my favorite parts, but can also be the hardest. What are the stories of your area, both on a local and cultural scale. Example: A West Virginian may incorporate legends of the Mothman. Everyone says that one building on my old college campus is haunted (and they’re right.) People talk about that liminal-space feeling when you drive down that one road at night.
Find the magic spots. Sometimes the urban legends will tip you off to these (usually in a bad way) but other times you can find them on your own. A place where the energy is just right for some reason. A place you can go to be closer to nature, or a place you could host a ritual if needed. Sometimes it’s just a place where you can feel your mind open a little bit. Example: The shady corner of a public park. The tunnel downtown. That weirdly-perfect circle of trees in the woods behind Wal-Mart.
Meet your land wights. Spirits of the local land. This could be the fair folk, but also house spirits, the spirits of the trees near you, the nature spirits of wherever you are. They’re there. Be good to them and they’ll be good to you! Note: Some spirits and wights will not be interested in working with you, and that’s okay. I generally think it’s good to at least leave a polite offering to just be on general decent terms even if you never work with them more directly beyond that.
Check in with your Seasons. Harvest holidays generally don’t have actual lifestyle importance to most people reading this. The seasonal shifts other people write about may be from a very different climate than yours! Figure out a calendar that works for you. It doesn’t have to be detailed, but something that ties you to the seasons as you actually experience them. I also love working in any fun annual festivals nearby, if any.

Oof one of the BIGGEST misconceptions of baby witches (myself included) is that you need everything right just now and/or that you need to buy everything from expensive metaphysical shops. And while it is important to support local businesses it’s more important for you not to go broke supplying things for your shop. So if you could form a small coven and share the cost or buy things form the dollar store, Amazon or even your local walmart DO THAT!! And don’t forget to forage. Set your intention that you will find what you need and don’t for get to ask the earth if it ok to take what you need before hand and leave an offering and NEVER take more then what you need!!!!
Cheap Alternatives to Expensive Tools
It's not about the tools you have, it's about the intent behind what you're doing. You don't need expensive tools in order to practice your craft!
Birthday Candles
Tealight Candles
Sticks for homemade Wands
Grass (yes, straight up lawn grass) for protection spells and knot magic
Wildflowers that you can pick for spells
Herbs from the dollar store
Notebook app for a digital grimoire
Notebook for a physical grimoire
Pocket knife for a ritual knife (be careful! don't cut yourself!)
Charge your things with the sun or moon
Deck of playing cards for cartomancy
Necklace that you already own for a pendulum
Stones you find on walks or on the beach
Use things that you can find in your environment you're in! I promise you have some amazing things that you can use!

Something has been calling me to make a broom…..also I’ve noticed more shadow people traffic in my house recently so I really needed thissss….>_<
Building a Broom/Besom 🍃
a witch’s broom, or a besom is tool used in witchcraft to cleanse spaces or purify an area as ritual preparation.  in the middle ages, it was used to apply flying ointment to the body to aid in astral travel, and even used in some hand-fasting ceremonies. it is associated with the air symbol.
Tumblr media
🍃 besoms are highly customizable!
you can have several for different occasions and purposes. the materials you use to build one can have an impact on what magics you use it for. a traditional wiccan besom is made from a hawthorne staff with birch twig bristles, tied together using willow.
if you are going to be using straw, soak the straw in water to make it more pliable. they will be less likely to snap and easier to weave in a pattern
🍃 staff
a few posibilities for staff handles based on wood magic correspondances. can also be used for wands.
alder -  weather magic, necromancy, courage and passion
almond -  wisdom, prosperity, love magic, healing
birch -  intuition, creativity, love, healing, protection
elder - healing, protection, banishment
hazel - truth, divination
holly - purity, sun magic, strength, protection, luck
oak -  protection, fertility, strength
redwood -  “king of trees”, strength, protection, creativity, enlightenment
rowan - defense, creation, travel
willow -  healing, protection, spirit work
yew -  strength, change
🍃 bristles:
you can use twigs of any of kind of tree, which will have its own correspondances
dried herbs - lavender, sage, rosemary, baby’s breath, etc
dried flowers
bird feathers - corresponds to the type of bird, or simply air element if an assortment
🍃 soak it in a tea bath to allow it to take on new abilities!
white tea - air magic, purification, protection, clarity, realization, meditation, cleansing
green tea - fire magic, healing, love, catalysts, mindfulness, passion, sexual health and new energies
black tea -  strength, stability, endings, finished business, and banishment, expelling negativity.
fruit related teas will correspond to the meanings of those fruits, strawberry for love, lemon for cleansing, etc.
🍃 assembly:
gather your staff, bristles, and binding method of choice. you can either:
bind the bristles together and stab/push the staff into the center of them
bind the bristles around the staff
bind the bristles around the staff so the ends are in the middle, and fold them down so they face the correct direction, and bind again around them
🍃 other customizations:
runes/sigils can be carved into the staff handle
knot magic - weave the bristles
ribbons and color magic
various stones and gems can be embedded

I’ve been wanting to do some glamour spells lately. This is super odd since I don’t particularly pay any attention to my looks so I’m assuming that it’s a call to grow my practice or to spend more time on loving myself….>_<
👁️👀Intro to Glamour👀👁️
Tumblr media
I will be covering the basics of glamour magick, also known as illusion magick. This will cover some basic history, functionality, as well as two beginner exercises you can use to begin working with your own glamours in the real world. <3
What does it do?
Glamours function on mental and emotional levels, altering the perception of the senses. Glamours are not limited to the typical senses of sight, taste, sound, touch, and smell. Glamours can also affect the sense of direction, perception of time, emotions, belief, impressions, hunger, thirst, lust, temperature, pain, and fatigue without actually affecting the physical: but perception.
A practitioner can give themselves beautiful rosy cheeks, piercing eyes, terrifying smiles, through illusion. In one sense, a practitioner could summon real spiders or spider spirits to haunt someone, though, a practitioner could achieve a similar, maddening effect through their own magick of glamour, alone: create the illusion of spiders.

Money spell jar
Tumblr media
If you saw my money candle I posted a few weeks ago this is part 2!
I had extra dry ingredients and I really hate wasting so I decided to make a spell jar out of the remaining ingredients!
Tumblr media
I added some of the ashes of when I burned my sigil to the bottom. If you decide to do this I suggest to put it at the bottom since it turns black and ruins the aesthetic of the pretty flowersss.
I made sure to put a little of everything in the jar. The mouth of the jar was small so I used an incense stick to push the ingredients in.
Tumblr media
Next I filled the jar up with olive oil. Last time I used olive oil to stick the ingredients to the outside of the candle.
Tumblr media
This is where things got a bit complicated because I really wanted to hang this jar on my rear view mirror but I didn’t know how I was going to accomplish that.
I decided to reuse and old pair of earrings. I just kind flattened out the part you stick into your ear hole and pushed it into the cork.
In hindsight I could have just tied string around the neck of the bottle 🤦‍♀️ ~sigh~
Tumblr media
I used a green birthday candle to seal the jar. I don’t know why the cork just absorbed the wax so but I couldn’t figure it out so I just left it like that. And voilà money spell jar complete
Tumblr media
So far my money candle has been working. I’m definitely not at a bill gates level of money but I do Keep getting unexpected money and finding money randomly. Please let me know if you try this and if it works for you!!!!!! Also if you know why my cork keeps absorbing wax and if I can fix that please lmk!!! >_< <3

Manifestation box!
Tumblr media
I’ve been seeing manifestation boxes becoming increasingly popular so I wanted to make one!!
Manifestation boxes are a way to increase the power behind your manifestations they’re also really helpful for people who need to physically need to see things or need to write things down.
Tumblr media
I found this super cute heart shaped box that I really vide with at a thrift shop so I got it knowing it was going to sit empty on a counter or cupboard somewhere collecting dust but as soon as I decided to make this box I remember that I had this super cute box so I took it as a sign……..
Tumblr media
For this particular craft I think it’s better to personalize your ingredients to what you manifest the most to direct the power.
However I will list my ingredients and the significance below to give y’all an idea of what I put in ittttt
Tumblr media
I made a list of the flowers I had at home and made a spreadsheet of third respective magick properties so these are some but not all of the things each ingredient is useful for.
I paid special attention to use things that were for growth, protection, and happiness since I usually manifest mental stability and money 😂
The crystals are from a mixed grab bag so I have no idea what they are I just chose them intuitively.
Tumblr media
Thanks for reading this farrr!!! If you make one please lmk so I can add more things to my boxxxx!!! >_<

Icing:
150g icing sugar

Update
I got a lot more money then I was expecting to so I guess it worked……I’ll keep updating
Money Candle
Tumblr media
As a preface This is the first time I’ve made a candle like thisss……so obviously I don’t know if i did it correctly but I made it the way my intuition was telling me to make it. If I did anything wrong or there is a better way to do thing plz definitely let me know.
Supplies
Tumblr media
Rice- money, prosperity
Lily- prosperity
Peony- luck
Jasmine- money, luck
F. Chrysanthemum- abundance
Calendula official- prosperity, money
Clove- luck, money, drawing, prosperity
Bay leafs- money, prosperity, fortune
Cinnamon- money
Olive oil- Luck
Black salt- protection
Money tree leaves- money
Directions
Tumblr media
First I cleansed all my supplies (including the tool I used) with fortune and blessing incense.
1) I carved a money sigil I made into my candle with the Green Aventurine.
2) I crushed all the ingredients I used (I just used whatever I had in my house already) and placed them on my tray. I placed the finely crushed items (ground cinnamon) at the bottom and the items that wouldn’t crush into small pieces at the top (flowers).
3) Finally I rubbed olive oil (I used cosmetic grade oil since that’s all I had) onto the candle and rolled the candle on the dry ingredients.
Tumblr media
Done!
So this definitely took less time then I thought it would. I had a lot of extra dry ingredients so I made lots small candles with gold and silver birthday candles. I still had left overs so I’m saving those for later.
Tumblr media
Since I lit the candle it’s had a nice tall steady flame I’ll keep y’all posted for any progress.

My Dreams
Tumblr media
The first dream I can remember is a nightmare. My childhood wasn’t dreamy to say the least so I cannot remember any dreams that were even pleasant.
Tumblr media
First Dream
Tumblr media
My prophetic dreams have only consisted of dinner scenes. I don’t know the reason these specific dreams came true. The first one I can remember is having dinner with my friend and her family and one other friend. Me parents were on one side of a both at Denny’s and the 3 or us were on the other side. We had just come to the restaurant after watching the Christmas parade. I was sitting in the middle and the waiter just dropped off a disgustingly cold looking plate of nachos. I remember saying “I dreamt of this exact moment” in reality the deja vu feeling that washed over me started as soon as I stepped foot in that restaurant. Of course, like any time I talk about anything remotely “creepy”, the skeptical stares were enough to keep me from talking
Second Dream
Tumblr media
The next time I had a dream come true was thanksgiving. The memory is so faint it’s like a dream itself. This time I was surrounded by family. It was the first thanksgiving the monster who called himself my father wasn’t around for thanksgiving. My sister, ever the skeptic, didn’t believe me and shot down my statement almost as soon as it came out of my mouth.
The end
Tumblr media
Since those time I haven’t had a prophetic dream, I’ve had vague deja vu feelings but not as strong. Almost like a word that’s on the tip of your tongue but you never find it, leaving you unsatisfied. I don’t know why my dreams revolved around dinner but I have a suspicion that the people in my dreams were the people who brought me comfort in my increasingly uncomfortable life.
Thanks for reading of you did…… I’m going to try and post more regularly but soon I’ll run out of things to sayyyy I live a very boring life 😂😂
