I started my YouTube channel, The Meticulous Manucurist Nail tutorials when I was on the brink of losing my career. My neurologists told me to find a new career! Before I was unable to work in the salon I thought if I could share my knowledge with other nail techs I could at least be happy knowing I could live vicariously through them and they could provide service to their communities, with the techniques they learned from me. At the same time I started my channel I started the patent process for my hand rest for doing nails to prevent the repetitive use injuries caused by my career. Within months my symptoms were improving from using my prototype! It was a very emotional time in my life and I get tears in my eyes just typing this. I didn't know how I could tell my staff or my clients. I never told anyone how bad it was because I didn't want them to worry. At the end of the day I would go home and lay in my hammock in the backyard with an ice pack and a beer, and pray to feel well enough to get through the next day of work. I had an enormous amount of pressure on me because my husband worked in the salon full time, but I was the person who generated the income. He hasn't collected a paycheck in over 11 years, him working in the salon saved overhead, so we didn't have to pay a salary to someone else. And to make matters worse while I was healing from cervical fusion surgery, not allowed to work, not allowed to drive. One of my staff members who was taking care of my clients while I was healing decided she was going to convince them to follow her to another salon so she could be booth rental. My ergonomically designed patented hand support was born in my head out of necessity. I watched it being bought to life in person today! A 2 year process of sleepless nights and anticipation not knowing when or if the patent would be approved. All my anxiety is gone today. My goal is to improve the industry, bring awareness, and prevent repetitive use injuries.
