anyway, something about tom's insecurities and the way he values being his grandfather's favourite grandchild - as if that might prove him to be the true successor to the legacy - over sticking by his beliefs, which is why penny is so regularly thrown under the bus by him. he's seen how easily tommy can pull away from someone, how easily he'll decide that they aren't worthy of his legacy, and ultimately, tom is willing to put penny down to ensure that tommy thinks the very best of him, even if he doesn't always mean the things he says to her.
