hope this tutorial helps, anon!! a lot of this is a result of experimentation and seeing what looks best based on your picture. what i’m essentially doing is relying on the overall “mood” bg colour tie everything together cohesively by putting the local colours over it on the “soft light” filter. the other changes i do, such as the blue light on him and the flavour elements are all based around making it more cohesive, e.g. the glow from the pool is all over the background AND the subject, instead of just the pool, pulling them together, if that makes sense!
of course this also relies on having some sense of what a realistic version of your scene would look like - for this comic i looked up “pool scenes night” on google to gather references i could take the colours from, and looked up lighting references for the way light would hit a face if coming from the bottom, stuff like that.
the other example is from a commission i did:
Tumblr media
in this case, the lighting situation has a lot more light, and isn’t as atypical as pool-at-night lighting. so it was easier to rely on my usual method of colour layering, i.e.
local colour on multiply (as opposed to soft light)
monochrome shading on normal
again, experiment experiment experiment! hope this helps!

Drawing Basics! AKA a big ass post about my art schooling.
Alright, here’s a short list of videos, apps, and book recommendations for drawing in general that I’ve either used or feel its a good resource.
Books:
Tumblr media
Vilppu Drawing Manual: This guy right here taught me how to do gesture drawings based on live figures. It breaks down the human body into simple shapes and gets you used to drawing faster.  I got this book as soon as I could afford it and I still go back to it.
Tumblr media
Andrew Loomis- Figure Drawing For All It’s Worth: I own this one and it is a STAPLE in my life, anything Andrew Loomis really. You gotta get basic anatomy and structure down before you start getting stylized, you get a feel for figures this way.
Tumblr media
Richard Williams-The Animator’s Survival Kit: I don’t have a physical version of this one, but it was my BIBLE throughout school, especially since I favored traditional animation. Even if you’re not animating, it really helps in developing action and movement in your still drawings.
Tumblr media
Other: The other books I have used were specialized in story boarding like Don Bluth’s The Art of Storyboard and certain comic book or animation styles that I liked. I was made aware of Dean Yeagle by one of my animation instructors because he told me my style reminded him of his and boy did researching him help. It also made me comfier in drawing nudes. I went to Wonder Con a few years back and finally got to meet him, nicest man.
Videos/tutorials:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHu2KNu6TtJ0p4hpSW7Yv7Q (he’s a more up to date instructor, and is great for showing the basics with more contemporary programs)
Software:
I started out with Windows Paint and Corel back when I had my itty bitty tablet. All I did was take the same basic technique I knew of drawing on paper and just transferred it to the digital world. Once I got into school, then I finally got a chance to work with Photoshop where I learned to use pen pressure and LAYERS. I haven’t used it, but I hear Krita is a comparable (and free) alternative. Currently, my go-to is Mischief. There’s a free version but the full version is $25, so it’s not as expensive as something like Photoshop. What I really like about it is that it has an infinite canvas and with that comes infinite zooming without losing quality. It’s great for sketching and going in to create finer details. And it recognizes pen pressure.
Here’s a couple of tumblr pages that are just lovely for helping artists:
artist-helping-association.tumblr.com
incaseyouart.tumblr.com
As for everything else, I have used google for poses and reference images. Especially if you can’t be(or feel uncomfortable) going out to stare at strangers for a few hours a week.
I still don’t feel that I’m that great as I am learning everyday almost all over again. There was a big chunk of my life after college where…I just couldn’t draw. Just plain stopped for almost 6 years. But once I was finally free of my shitty situation I was able to find that part of myself again and everything just felt right. I still haven’t gotten the hang of painting digitally but I’m trying. And most importantly
PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!
Thanks for coming to my TEDtalk, message me about anything I may have missed or glossed over(especially if you want the PDF versions of certain books that I may or may not have…) :)

Late last year I wanted to start a series of short tutorials called Tip Jar, as a way of saying thanks to my fans and giving back to my patrons. This is the first of the series I have made, showing my technique on quickly filling in lineart so you can get to painting without coloring outside the lines faster.
Someday I hope to turn these into video tutorials when I have the income and the time, but for now I hope that I will be able to share useful tips in this infographic format.

I try to do Inktober like every year and I fail every time. I may try again and I will most certainly fail around the 13 or 14th day, but I’m still going to try and I think that’s what’s important. I was trying to find some good prompts but nothing was sticking out so I started looking for a D&D one but didn’t find anything I wanted. The thing is there’s just SO MUCH content so I made this prompt myself and kept it very flexible. You can stick to one column or go week to week, choose one side or the other, or whatever you wanna do. Oh, by the way, for Week 1 of Humanoids, by ‘spellcaster class’ I mean wizard, sorcerer or warlock but that wouldn’t fit.

tired of complicated and show-offy art challenges? Then this is the event for you!
doodlecember is my concept for an art challenge that exists solely to have you flex your art muscles just enough to keep you sharp without the pressure of making something “spectacular”.  How does it work?
RULES:
1. you can only use one layer (if digital) and only pen (if traditional).
2. try not to scratch out bad lines or erase anything– the idea of doodling is letting yourself draw without thinking too much!
3. draw the FIRST thing that pops into your head when you read the prompt.
4. you can spend no more than 5 minutes on the drawing– so draw fast!
hopefully these guidelines will encourage you to draw faster and looser than you otherwise would! If you do use this template tag it with #doodlecember so i can see your drawings ^^ and good luck!

Some Photoshop Tips
I’ve been getting quite a few asks about the process for the patterns in my stylized artworks, so I decided to put together a couple of tips regarding them.
Firstly, what you need are
—  CUSTOM BRUSHES  —
Most of the patterns I use are custom brushes I made, such as those:
Tumblr media
For the longest time I was convinced making brushes must be super extra complicated. I was super extra wrong. All you need to start is a transparent canvas (2500px x 2500px max):
Tumblr media
This will be your brush tip. When you’re satisfied how it looks, click Ctrl+A to select the whole canvas and go to ‘define brush preset’ under the edit menu
Tumblr media
You will be asked to name your new glorious creation. Choose something that describes it well, so you can easily find it between all the ‘asfsfgdgd’ brushes you’ve created to be only used once
Tumblr media
This is it. Look at it, you have just created a photoshop brush. First time i did I felt like I was cheated my whole life. IT’S SO EASY WHY HASN’T ANYONE TOLD ME
Tumblr media
Time to edit the Good Boi to be more random, so it can be used as a Cool Fancy Pattern. Go into brush settings and change whatever you’d like. Here’s a list of what I do for patterns:
- under Shape Dynamics, I increase Size Jitter and Angle jitter by 5%-15%
- under Brush Tip Shape, I increase spacing by a shitload. Sometimes it’s like 150%, the point is to get the initial brush tip we painted to be visible.
- If I want it to look random and noisy, I enable the Dual Brush option, which acts like another brush was put on top of the one we’ve created. You can adjust all of the Dual Brush options (Size, Spacing, Scatter, Count) as you wish to get a very nice random brush to smear on your  backgrounds
Tumblr media
The result is as above. You can follow the same steps to create whatever brush you need: evenly spaced dots that look like you painted them by hand, geometric pattern to fill the background, a line of perfectly drawn XDs and so on.
BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE
—  PATHS  —
But what if you want to get lots of circles made of tiny dots? Or you need rows of triangles for your cool background? Photoshop can do all of that for you, thanks to the magic of paths.
Typically, paths window can be found right next to Layers:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Draw whatever path you want, the Shape Tool has quite a bit of options. Remember, paths are completely different from brush strokes and they won’t show up in the navigator. To move a path around, click A to enable path selection tool. You can use Ctrl+T to transform it, and if you move a path while pressing Alt it will be duplicated.
Tumblr media
Now, pick a brush you wish really was in place of that path you’ve drawn and go to layers, then choose the layer you want it to be drawn on. Then, click this tiny circle under the Paths window:
Tumblr media
Then witness the magic of photoshop doing the drawing for you while you wonder how tf have you managed to forget about this option for the past 2 years
Tumblr media
You can combine special brushes and paths for all sorts of cool effects. I mostly use them in backgrounds for my cards, but you can do whatever you want with them.
Tumblr media
I hope that answers the questions for all of the people who were sending me inquires about the patterns. If you have any questions regarding this or any other Photoshop matter feel free to message me, I’m always up for complaining about how great and terrible Photoshop is C’:

HEY ARTISTS!
Do you design a lot of characters living in not-modern eras and you’re tired of combing through google for the perfect outfit references? Well I got good news for you kiddo, this website has you covered! Originally @modmad made a post about it, but her link stopped working and I managed to fix it, so here’s a new post. Basically, this is a costume rental website for plays and stage shows and what not, they have outfits for several different decades from medieval to the 1980s. LOOK AT THIS SELECTION:
Tumblr media
OPEN ANY CATEGORY AND OH LORDY–
Tumblr media
There’s a lot of really specific stuff in here, I design a lot of 1930s characters for my ask blog and with more chapters on the way for the game it belongs to I’m gonna be designing more, and this website is going to be an invaluable reference. I hope this can be useful to my other fellow artists as well! :)
