          that visual might be distressing, coming from anyone else, but edith cannot look at veronika and think of a common alley rat. she’s more reminiscent of the mice from cinderella : firm, candid, and delicate. it brings a mirthful gleam to edith’s eyes. “yes,” she begins, lighting a cigarette, “ — well. where i’m from, it’s more what you sing and less how it’s sung.” the aim isn’t to downplay her own talents. she has the daves and bobs of the world in mind.

    veronika gets the picture. she doesn’t have a well of knowledge on american folk singers, but she knows edith can sing. the process of elimination isn’t too difficult from there. it’s not like fine songwriters, with poor voices, haven’t wormed their way into most other genres. ‘ so what you’re saying is i still have a chance ? ’ she stifles a laugh at her own joke. ‘ i kid, but i don’t know if could be so poetic either. the arts escape me.’

‘Yir no here for a check-up,’ it’s an extremely small dental practice, brand new, hidden near a suburb. She’s popped in just as the receptionist has gone on her hour-long lunch break.

   ‘ no, no. i’m just- looking around. ’ she smiles at him before turning her back, getting the general scope and idea of the place. the walls, like that of most medical practices, could use more color. ‘ you’re tommy, correct? i’m a friend of simon’s. ’

     ‘ i always wished i could sing nicely, since i was so small. ’ she pushes the straw in her glass around and around the rim, secure enough with herself to freely rag on the little things without batting so much as an eyelash. ‘ everyone says you can be taught, but i don’t believe that. i think you’re either good, and get better, or your voice is like mine. - like a mouse, i think. ’

     “What’s in Bulgaria?” He’s got his feet on the comforter at the bottom of her bed and he’s looking at her sidelong, approximating an expression of deep interest. He’s not entirely sure if that’s the right place or if he’s mixed it up with Romania or somewhere similarly not-Russia-but-basically-Russia, but he’s trying to sound confident enough about it that that might not even occur to her that he made a mistake.

    ‘ what’s in scotland? ’ she did consider, for a second, telling him a half truth instead of reaching for a meaningful deflection. honesty is always compelling until you’ve actually done the thing and spilled your guts out, so the feeling is fleeting. mark’s nice to talk to, but not so nice that she feels any kind of guilty for being persistently cryptic. ‘ there’s just something about home, mhm? ’
