Our first Viceroy. Eggs laid on and raised on Black Willow. They also use Cottonwood and Aspen trees as host plants. Viceroy caterpillar has officially pupated. The host plant is Black Willow trees. Which are also host plant to Mourning Cloak, Red-spotted Purple, and Tiger Swallowtail. So four different butterflies use it. My first Viceroy! My excitement in this experience made me forget to say the host plant. She is laying eggs on a Black Willow. I got this tree in the Spring, knowing that I would plant it this Fall. Proof yet again, of plant it and they will come. We have started a nesting ball. Over the years I noticed many birds collecting materials for nesting. This year, I decided to make a nesting ball. I took two hanging baskets and connected them to make a sphere. Then as I lightly started to clear up the habitat after our record breaking freeze, I stuffed the ball with the materials.
