All throughout her journey towards Winterfell she had watched over the landscape longingly, clutching to the offer that Robb had made when she had first arrived. Robb had many duties to attend to but he was all too glad to have an excuse to postpone what he saw as busy work for later and enjoy the forest while the weather was kind for once. Surely making sure their guest of honour enjoyed her visit trumped any other duties, that was his excuse and he was sticking to it.

Robb knew of treacherous mist but none could compare to the one surrounding this mountain kingdom for at times during the journey the mist was so thick Robb could have cut it with his sword. “It was as you had warned. We anticipated the mist and at least the roads were void of bandits” he remarked remaining courteous.

At the language that fell from him, she outright giggled, not even bothering to hide the reaction behind coy head turns. He appreciated her laugh and so she’d let him see it. “Unfortunately for me I have duty to uphold. I can’t go around burning the political bridges for the sake of entertainment, can I?” Dorne had a much different mindset to anything North of it but she was still taught the importance of a princess’s duty.  And still, with that admission he had called her magnificent. A word she’d never heard uttered in her direction. “My brothers used to warn people when I was young… They’d say that while I had the beauty and temperament of sweet wildflowers, I have the sharp tongue to match the viper hidden underneath.” So many palmed her off as weak and useless due to her delicate health and it was true she was no great warrior and had no ill temper to speak of, but she was not meek. 

“Of that I have no doubt your excellence ” Robb grinned a little at the warning raising his hands upwards a little in ‘surrender’. He had grossly misjudged her, Elia was nothing like he thought her to be. “All men were born fools when it comes to a beautilful face but I need no caution, my mother is so terrifying even the wilder beasts on the forest would not dare take their chances, she taught me that the more beautiful a woman the more dangerous so you must be the biggest threat I am to survive” he bit his lip in thought knowing he ought to thread a little more lightly around a princess that played her part so well so fooled the entire delegation under this roof. By the Gods she was beautiful, the most breath taking woman he had ever laid his eyes on. He made no effort to hide how enchanting he found her, how much like a fresh breeze she was on such dull days.

“Tell me more of Dorne. What do you do for entertainment then?”

It had been an argument, and then two. Next he was spending more time tending to his duties than in their bed, she started neglecting him in favour of caring for their children. Time passed and despite still being young in the eyes of so many, she felt old. Tired and sad and lonely at the ripe age of twenty seven. And she missed him with a fierce ache she didn’t know she was capable of.  Elia’s breath hitched in her throat as he wrapped his arms around her, finding herself clinging to him without a second thought. They may have found themselves at odds more often than not lately, but he was still her husband, still the love of her life and the one person who knew her better than any. They had fought tooth and nail to be together, how could they let it slip away?

“You haven’t forgotten. We’ve just been… busy.”

Busy raising children and ruling over the North. It really was no excuse but she needed him to know that despite her tears and the sorrow in her heart, he could make her happy again. It had always been him that made her face light up with joy. Elia held only him, face buried in his neck and breathing him in, trying to muster back up that happiness they had felt before they’d faced so many bumps in the road. 

“I love you too. I’ve never stopped loving you.”

If at the beginning when every minute was made to last he could have glimpsed into the future and seen them drift apart he would have wished death upon his future self. He had to fight everything and everyone just to prove himself worthy of her, she had to fight even more to be allowed to be his. So many battles they had to endure to even marry who could have ever imagined they would end up like this.

Perhaps the Gods had an inch of kindness to spare after all, that was the thought in Robb’s mind as he held his beautiful sunshine in his arms and took in her scent. This fiercely strong despite her fragile health woman was exhausted and he failed to recognise that she needed him. 

“I have only loved you since the day you refused to be weak and cry in my presence. You and only you-” he never strayed, no other woman ever compared to Elia who in his eyes was a Goddess walking among them but many a nights he made her to endure an empty bed. 

“We will endure this too. There were once days where I would have fought the Sun himself to have you spare a glance my way , I will learn to be worthy of you once more. We will go...somewhere beautiful, you, I , the children and their governesses.” A holiday would not mend this but it was a start , right? He had changed, he was once gruff and spoke more akin to a commoner than a young man of court unlike now. Yet deep down despite appearances he still had a little bit of that wolfish brutality that just taking in her scent again made him yearn for the old nights of passion they had shared.

“I have almost forgotten how intoxicating you are, how desperate you make me for a kiss-” he breathes leaning his forehead against hers but not forcing his affections on her.

“He will be King and you will be so far away that even our prayers will not reach you when you are all alone and he tends to his duties” Robb spoke harsher than he would have liked concerned by more than just thoughts of the Baratheon boy neglecting her in favor of courtly duties.

His skin was pink as the flowers that surrounded them, the Dornish sun had not been kind to her winter king and Elia almost felt bad at the difficult time he’d been having. Almost. Her laugh was melodious, reaching out to brush fingers through the curls that were growing longer the more time spent in Dorne (he should probably have it trimmed before it added to the heat he was already experiencing). “Shall we retire to our quarters?” Elia asked in a soft, persuasive voice and leaned in close, teeth tugging gently at his earlobe as she spoke. “There you need not worry about clothes at all.”

Many pains he had endured in his life this humiliation would not be the end of him even if he had to survive the sun out of spite. “How can you possibly find me in any way a suitable attractive companion I will never know. The Gods have either blessed me with immense charisma or have struck you blind and foolish” Robb answered defeated more than happy that she was using her seductions to lure him into ‘safety’ rather than stating the obvious...he was not made for this climate.

Her stomach twisted in the biggest knot as their hands met. She had wondered of his touch since they were mere children with war being the last thing to be present in their innocent minds of playing games and singing songs. For one who wielded a sword, gripped onto reins of the horses he rode, his skin was surprisingly soft. 

The closer Robb came to her, the weaker her knees became. The warmth of his breath of his skin seemed to consume her entire body, settling in the pit of her stomach. 

“Very much so,” she whispered, her breath hitching in her chest. Finally, she had been bold enough to make some kind of move, squeezing his occupied hand and placing her’s upon his armored chest. 

Her entire body swelled with this newfound heat, her pale cheeks blushing crimson. No one had been so forward, but she did not mind if it was coming from Robb. She had never been kissed before. It would be quite a story to hold onto that if he followed through with his wishes, he would be the one to change that. 

“I will not stop you if you choose to do so.” 

He should simply cause the Forrester girl no further pain and leave. He was consciously aware of the path he was choosing for her if he was to impulsively grab her now and give her what they both desired. Pale cheeks turned crimson and her hand on his armoured chest a far bolder move than he thought her capable off, to reach for him albeit shyly even in her encouraging words he was still the one choosing her path. 

If he was to kiss her right now he would be damning her to sleepless nights, tear stained gowns and prayers to Old Gods as news of him would diminish the further into battle he went. She would be hurt, distraught and worried all because he was a fool who could not leave without tasting her kiss. He knew he should just leave and be kind. Leave her to a future with a man that would be there not across the map. He almost went to turn but he was selfish. He wanted this one moment of selfishness to himself and he would bear the burden of knowing he damned her in the process.

“I am so sorry-” Robb breathes as hands move to clutch her cheeks making Talia shift her gaze accordingly and captured her lips first gently, a butterfly light kiss to taste her lips but made him want them even more. Arms abandon her face and surround her pulling her tight against cold, dirty metal and like a desperate man he assaults her lips with a frantic fevered kiss that would leave his lips bruised and he dared not  to think of what he would do to hers. 

They lived now on borrowed time for as soon as the weather changed they would be marching off to war. “I am sorry for all the pain and suffering you will endure all because I love you-”

So many conversations that were left unsaid, too many prayers left unanswered and as much as he wanted to speak of his grief, of the wretched life he lead in squalor plotting to use his attempted assassination to his advantage  making his enemies believe he was dead...that had been the plan. Disappear for a while and return triumphant but as their house lost allies by the dozen the was no one to turn to, by the time he even found enough coin someone else had completed his quest. 

Sansa saved herself in the end.

He wanted so desperately to tell her everything but in the end, at the sight of her disappointment he said none of it.

Who in the last year had not been held at the threat of a sword. Political turmoil was always in the air but the past year it had been amplified by a hundred. Being threatened did not frighten him but meeting a stranger with no weapon in the middle of the forest with such a calm demeanour would make the hardest of battle born warriors stand on edge.

“Only unprepared fools fear winter..” he replies making no move towards his sword seeing as it had been a woman with no obvious weapon that addressed him and he was more idiot than he ought to be when it came to the ‘fair’ gender being a threat. 

“Monsters dwell everywhere, some wear crowns behind castle walls call themselves Kings.” He was not strictly lost more sent astray taking the forest paths to avoid the town roads but this forest was not known to him. 

“No monster could ever unnerve me as much as lone woman with too calm a demeanour in a forest ever could-”
