Artist Statement
Taking this class at the end of my degree at MDC was a bit of a challenge since it was filled with skills and concepts I already knew but didn’t know how to put into practice efficiently. Being able to learn more about myself as an artist and student was an important yet incredible challenge that wouldn’t have been possible if not for Professor Fresquet. She influenced my mindset completely and changed the way I approach art nowadays to which I am eternally grateful for. In regard to materials, my favorite by far has been charcoal. I used to despise charcoal simply because it’s a messy tool and would take forever to clean up. Having to use the material every day during class hours and outside of it was most certainly a struggle but i overcame it. I especially loved working on the midterm and gesture drawings since it provided me with the tools to better grasp control on my materials. Overall, I’ve definitely gained a new perspective and appreciation for charcoal that I simply didn’t think was possible. Learning to not be a perfectionist was 100% my biggest challenge this semester as i tend to lean towards perfection in all my work without realizing. I think that’s why i found contour drawings so frustrating at first since it required extreme concentration to NOT make a bad line. Thankfully I was able to get the hang of it and learn that there is no such thing as perfect (at least not in art). All in all, I greatly enjoyed my time in this class and at MDC overall. I learned a lot from my amazing professor and peers which i will take with me as I move forward in my academics at FIU! I plan on obtaining my Bachelors there for Art Education which is very exciting but nerve-wracking. I’ll be pushing myself even harder this upcoming semester so I look forward to bettering my skillset and being the best version of myself i can possibly be. Thank you Professor!!

Reflection Post
Being able to to attend a museum for our final assignment was truly an amazing experience all together. Although I had many different things going on that week, I thoroughly enjoyed going through each exhibition and reading about the artist’s vision and process. I had gone to the ICA Museum (2nd favorite, 1st is Rubell) with my mother on wednesday and was head over heels for Keiichi Tanaami’s work. The way he utilizes color and shape in his work is simply amazing when you read about why he does so. I believe my favorite part of the entire visit was getting to see the different ways art can be done both materials wise and visually. Another artist I really enjoyed was Ding Shilun! The expression and almost fairytale aspect of their work is incredibly inspiring considering it’s such a different way to go about using people as subject matter. When creating my piece, I heavily referenced Tanaami’s ink/marker pieces which although smaller were equally as fun and powerful. The original piece included a nude woman in front of some pink lips. I thought this was odd of him considering his other work but liked the change all the same. While the piece is relatively simple, I think the fact that he was still able to make the piece its own independent thing despite its simplicity was ultimately part of the piece itself and tastefully done

3 Female Artists Video Reflection
Agnes Martin
A) Martin's media of choice allows abstraction and interpretation to shine through her work compared to that of a single theme. This way, she can convey unadulterated emotion within her paintings.
B) In the video, Martin mentions having a "vacant mind" before beginning any kind of project. She remains still until an idea/image appears before her in the form of a postage stamp. It is then that she scales the image up to size using complicated math. It is this kind of space that truly allows Martin to create the intricate pieces we have today.
C) I felt seen by Martin's explanation and purpose for these paintings. The concept that her paintings are states of existence rather than just meaningless lines and colors is beautiful in of itself even when abstracted. Overall, I've learned from Martin that emotion does not have to be convoluted and complex to express itself freely but personal to oneself.
Sheila Hicks
A) Compared to most artists, Hicks doesn't feel tied down to one specific material. Through sculptures, she hopes to make the audience question/wonder what is happening beyond the installation (ex. Pillar of Inquiry). In her mind, the more pliable the material the more attracted she is to them which makes room for creativity and expression to take place.
B) A lot of Hicks' ideas actually come from life! In her piece, "Blue Letter" Hicks utilizes the texture and roughness of her subject in her favor. The concept of grids and deviants also plays a huge role in her work since it helps create movement and context within the vast blue piece. Despite not mentioning much, it seems clear that Hicks' inspiration for her work comes from the work itself.
C) If I had to take away at least one thing from Hicks' video, I'd say that allowing oneself to use any and all materials is beneficial to both artists and their work. For a while, I've remained fearful of branching out into different mediums/materials (painting, sculpture, graphic design, etc) since it seemed like I'd never do well with them. After watching Hicks and her art process, I've decided to become more confident in every approach I take regardless of the media used.
Maggi Hambling
A) Maggi Hambling's video explanation was probably my favorite of the three. She explains how her path into art was random and somewhat shocking since she had only done so due to a crush. This was insane to hear since she is not only a famous artist now but a great one at that.
B) Whilst working alongside Lett-Haines, Hambling was told to make art her best friend if she planned on pursuing it seriously. Since then, she's made sure to do that regardless of what it may be. By allowing herself to release all the "baggage" and stressors of life into her work, Hambling is able to create emotional yet intentional strokes that captivate audiences of all backgrounds.
C) Towards the end of her video, Hambling states "I go into work hoping that I might be better because unlike tennis players/ballet dancers, I don't have to stop" which caused me to think of art and all its processes differently. Art is not great because it checks a certain amount of boxes, it is great because of what's put into those boxes. After listening to Hambling and her journey as an artist, I feel compelled to go after any and all opportunities that become available to me. If I had to best describe the mindset I've adapted thanks to Hambling, I'd quote her words at the end of the video: "I live in a constant state of doubt, yet a painting couldn't have become just that unless you bugger it around for a few months".

Why We Draw - Reflection
Having watched the video "Why We Draw", has really put things into perspective both career and mindset wise. I've been drawing for as long as I can remember to the point where it's become something I'd like to pursue. After high school (during it too!) I knew I always wanted to hone my skills further and create something bigger than myself. Taking a drawing class would not only fulfill my graduation requirements but fulfill my soul. Art is the way I see and navigate this world; It's the language I speak and the air I breathe. Ultimately, my hopes are that with this class I can better myself artistically, mentally, and emotionally as I continue to pursue my education and future art endeavors.
In regards to accomplishments and hopes for this class, I hope to further better my compositional, proportional, and problem solving skills. Although I try to work on these things independently, having a professional around to critique and help out on weaker subjects is always a blessing. Figure drawing and anatomical studies are some of my favorite kinds of drawings since they allow me to dive deeper into facets of human expression, anatomy, and motion. Overall, I am incredibly excited and eager to have Professor Fresquet again this semester and for the upcoming classes since I know they'll help me a great amount!

Artist Statement
My favorite supplies this semester have been fine liner pens and acrylic paints. The vibrant colors of acrylics allow me to convey my creativity in a spectacular way, and the barely noticeable difference pens provide my work intricate details. The vibrating edges project was one example of a champion workmanship assignment where I had to combine my understanding of variety hypotheses with the elements and standards of craftsmanship to create a product that deviated from the norm. It inspired me to explore novel approaches and continuously integrate different media, developing an impressive creative expression. I encountered difficulties managing my imagination when it came to the rearrange tasks during the entire semester. Even though I hadn't really completed tasks like that in a while, it was still a test of my understanding of the standards and representations during the semester. The bar for learning and adjustment was high, but by seeking guidance from online learning activities and engaging in peer discussions, I gradually gained control over the techniques and overcame the underlying challenges.
The midterm job was a significant test, as I had to create a plan that was both captivating and perplexing at the same time. Speaking with coworkers and receiving feedback from my teacher actually proved to be important in improving my process. Additionally, looking at alternative options for elective variety ranges and practicing the midterm at a smaller scale (i.e., a thumbnail size) increased my chances of achieving the desired outcome. To overcome these obstacles, adaptability and a will to learn became essential components. Taking a development perspective allowed me to turn obstacles into opportunities for growth. This semester has improved my understanding of various materials used in craftsmanship and elevated my critical thinking skills even in the face of creative challenges. I'm incredibly grateful for how this semester has not only increased my understanding of various materials used in craftsmanship but also elevated my critical thinking skills even in the face of creative challenges.

Midterm
As I drew closer to my midterm, I put a lot of effort towards the idea in terms of how structure and variety coexisted. Color theory and emotional resonance were taken into consideration when choosing certain hues. To guarantee a good execution of my idea, I started with several thumbnail sketches which were then revised to better fit the style I wanted for each square.
The midterm itself was successful due to the principles of art, which I made sure to use throughout the pieces; Specifically, scale, color, shape, and balance. These different ideas created an outwardly invigorating however amazing final. I took my time, ensuring that each square/design added something important to the piece’s overall appearance.
All in all, I'm content with the final seeing as it was reworked to better use the principles and elements of art. It mirrors a conscious examination of variety and structure that I hope to achieve in future projects as I continue my career in the arts.
