I hate it when some magical girl fans act like all magical girl shows were happy and wholesome until madoka magica got popular, that's not true because magical shows have always been dark just look at revolutionary girl utena or sailor moon I mean the sailor scouts f*cking DIE in season 1 (but not really, I don't remember the specifics), in w.i.t.c.h Elyon essentially got groomed (same for bloom in season 2) and so on an so forth. All this to say magical girl shows have always been dark.
