   History
Born to a single mother in Yonkers, NY, Max grew up poor, and struggling, but well taken care of. She had been an actress in her former life, mostly in small cameos and background extra scenes, but had spent many years on the smaller stages of NYC. When she fell pregnant with Max, she moved home to Yonkers to raise him alone.
Max doesn’t know why she never told his father about him, but he only found out his name when he turned 18. She could have gotten child support from him, or had a life with him, or Max could have, at the very least, had a father figure in his life from a young age. This is a slight source of contention between them, but Max loves and respects his mother, so he makes sure not to harp on it.
When Max was seven, he was tested in school and advanced a grade. Every other year he seemed to skip ahead, until he finally graduated at 14 with a 3.9 GPA. He often felt weird in school, never surrounded by peers, but by the time he reached high school, his mother had enrolled him in a homeschool program, and he did better emotionally.
Going to college at the tender age of 14, Max was very lucky that his parents uprooted his siblings to move to Newark with him. They have always been supportive, even his step-father, who treats him like his own son. After graduation, they decided to stay in New Jersey, even though Max was moving to the city as soon as he got the right job.
Commuting from New Jersey to the city after getting his job at Dunco, until he saved up enough for his own place, was grueling, but his parents were just as supportive, giving him rides to the bus station, and picking him up in the evenings, so he didn’t have to walk very far.
Once he began to work in the city, he started researching his father, feeling safe from his mother’s prying eyes. He never wanted to hurt her, or Dante, with his curiosity, so having a space away from them to search was a relief.
Of course, Joey Tribbiani was easy to research, as far as his career went, anyway. A big movie star, a television star, a Broadway star, all of it made Max nervous. He just wanted to meet him, he didn’t have to tell him the truth, he just wanted to set his eyes on him, maybe talk to him, feel closer to him, even a little bit. The idea of stalking him, though, was uncomfortable, and Max couldn’t bring himself to attempt to approach him in public.
When he came across what he thought to be Joey’s former address in the village, Max was surprised to find that there was also an ad out looking for a roommate. Did he dare? What could it hurt? He could feel closer to his father in a round about way, but not be underfoot, or a nuisance.
Ben was really nice when they met up at the Starbucks, and after talking for a while, much longer than expected, Max began to feel as if he’d been looking for these two friends his entire life. He’d never fit in before, and while they were both older than him, they didn’t make him feel like a child in the least. In fact, Leslie even told him she was impressed by how mature and together he was in comparison to the two of them.
So Max moved in that weekend with his parents help, and his mother, whom he worried might recognize the location, didn’t seem fazed one bit. Which was good, right? If she didn’t know he was living there because of Joey, and Joey wouldn’t ever know, then everything would stay kosher! Of course, he has no idea Ben is subletting the apartment from Joey himself, but why would he even think to ask? Ben doesn’t know him, anyway! Right?

   Education:
NYU (2016-2017)
   Current Residence:
495 Grove Street Apt. 19, West Village, Manhattan, NY
Roommates: Ben Geller (24); Max Boscarino (19)
   Occupation:
Office Temp at Tipton’s Temporaries (Manhattan);
Barista at Starbucks (West Village)
   History
Raised upstate, Leslie had quite the unique upbringing. One of a set of triplets, she and her siblings didn’t find out until they were eight that their Aunt Phoebe was their surrogate and carried them to full term.
Her father was often called, “the village kook,” by their neighbors, and while that did upset her as a child, she now acknowledges that he was a bit kooky. Then again, so was everyone on her father’s side of the family, and it explains a lot about her own personality, too.
Their mother, though very upbeat and sweet, was much more rational, and was often left to play the bad guy during punishments. Because of this, the triplets preferred their father’s company until their teen years. Alice was hurt by this, always afraid that it was because she wasn’t their “birth mother”, but once they became teenagers, she realized the truth of it was simply that she was the only one enforcing rules around the house.
When Leslie turned 12, she began to gravitate more towards her mother, who encouraged her artistic passions, and assured her that she would find a job in art if she really tried, and practiced.
Leslie still has the discipline to draw every night for two hours after work, no matter how little sleep she might get because of it. Her mother had always encouraged her to do this after school, during school, whenever the fancy struck, and still fawns at every photo Leslie sends her of her current work.
When the triplets were ten, they’d go spend time with their Aunt Phoebe in the city every third weekend of the month. As teenagers, they were free to visit on the weekends, as long as they didn’t have any other responsibilities, and as long as Phoebe was willing. Lucky for Leslie, Aunt Phoebe welcomed her no matter what, even after she married Uncle Mike, and Leslie took advantage of their hospitality. She would visit museums, watch people paint or draw in the park, and take in shows at small galleries. It was the best time of her life.
There was no doubt in her mind that she wanted to go to art school, but midway through her first year at NYU, Leslie knew that higher education just wasn’t for her. Her mother didn’t approve of her dropping out of school and not enrolling elsewhere, but her father was supportive at first. When she began doing temporary office work for a company, he began to put the pressure on for her to come home and go to trade school. What did she need a degree in art for, when she could learn to fix appliances, or paint cars, or something useful?
After the fifty-seventh fight over her future, Leslie stopped calling her parents and decided to just become a vagabond in the city, surfing from couch to couch at friend’s places, and sometimes with strangers. It wasn’t completely awful, her Aunt Phoebe had it much worse when she was homeless, but it really did feel isolating to not have anywhere to make space just for herself.
When Ben insisted that she move into his apartment, going so far as to sell his queen size bed and purchase bunk beds instead, she accepted, but only because she knew she could trust him, and because, well, bunk beds!
Falling in love with Ben came easily; he was charming, and intelligent, and when she said something other people gave her funny looks for, he always understood. Plus, he is really, really cute.
Most of their roommates so far have simply been flakes, or couldn’t handle the city, or just couldn’t find jobs they were comfortable with taking (what’s wrong with temp work?!), but Max has settled in nicely, and their auras all compliment each other perfectly, according to Leslie.
Ben has made her a little art corner for her easel, a space just for her to paint in, and lets her spread out across the apartment with her artwork as needed. Normally, clutter bothers him, and so Leslie tries to keep everything as neat as possible, but it does often get out of hand.
Being an office temp is usually pretty chill, moving from job to job every so often, never staying anywhere longer than six weeks, sometimes as little as three days. It has expanded her horizons, given her a broader taste of the world, as she has temped everywhere from a receptionist desk at a makeup company, to entering data at a medical records digital archiving company. It’s a lot of fun, but it isn’t a “steady job”, as her parents would say, so she has to work nights at the Starbucks in their building.

Roommates: Leslie Buffay (21); Max Boscarino (19)
   Occupation:
Student (NYU Tisch);
Server at Otto’s Delicatessen (West Village).
   History:
Moved to Connecticut at the age of 12 after his mothers friends convinced them it was a better place to raise their two children.
Wanting another child, his mothers made the decision to use a sperm donor when he was 11. Susan was pregnant with Skylar when they moved to Connecticut.
Ben came to visit his father every other weekend after their move, for every major holiday, Jewish and Secular, and for a month in the summer.
After his father and step-mother, Rachel, moved to Paris when he was 13, he spent two months in the summer with them, as well as spring break.
When they moved back 2 years later, they resumed the former visitation schedule.
Ben was very close to Emma and Teddy while they were growing up, but once he went off to college, they drifted apart a bit. He’s not as close to Lola as he was to his other siblings, but he’s trying to change that now, even though they live upstate.
Ben became obsessed with cinema after his Uncle Joey became the lead in a blockbuster film trilogy. As a grown up, he’s become more of a cinephile, and refuses to engage in any sort of cinema that could be considered blockbuster, or mainstream.
Despite that, his girlfriend, Leslie Buffay, loves action films, superhero franchises, and the occasional Rom Com, much to his dismay. He accompanies her when she can’t find a girlfriend to go with her, but he hates every second of it, on purpose. In return, she goes with him to his foreign films, independent films, and art house movies, despite very rarely enjoying them herself.
Ben grew up seeing Leslie at “family friend nights”, which became a tradition once Ross and Rachel moved back from France. She wasn’t always there, but in her teen years, she and Chandler would come nearly every time. Leslie decided to attend NYU her first year of college, but dropped out to become what she called an “independent student of the world”.
When Ben found out she had become a willing couch surfing homeless person, he invited her to come stay at his place with his three roommates. They began dating shortly after that, keeping it a secret from the family for well over a year.
After Ben graduated from Tisch with his Bachelors, he took the offer from Uncle Joey to move into the apartment he was subletting. Joey had lived there with Uncle Chandler while he was a struggling actor, and when he’d moved to LA had sublet it instead of letting it go, as he was too attached to it, and his chick and duck were living there. Ben lucked out when the people who had been living there were moving out, and jumped at the offer.
The chick and the duck no longer live there. They retired to a farm a few years ago.
This meant needing roommates, so he finally came clean to his father, and extended family, about his relationship with Leslie. There were mixed feelings about this, mostly because she had no direction in her life (his father’s words), and because Ben had no future prospects (her mother’s words). Leslie moved in, anyway, taking a job at the Starbucks downstairs, and they put an ad in the paper for a third roommate.
After countless roommates moved in, and out, thanks to the struggling job market, they now have a new roommate, Max, who seems to be fitting in quite nicely. Despite his age, Max has a great job in the tech industry, having graduated from high school at 14, and finished college at 18.
Ben wants a job in television more than anything, which seems counter intuitive to his film snobbery, and while he has the full support of his mothers, his father is resistant. Still, Ross helps pay for Ben’s college, not wanting him to be in debt once he graduates, in exchange for Ben’s promise he’ll get a “real job” for four years after he graduates, to help pay him back.
Because of this, Ben intends to get his doctorate in cinema, just to prove his father wrong about the worth of his field of study. If his father can “worship dinosaurs”, Ben can put his faith in his passion as well.
His mothers help him with rent, but he works at Otto’s deli to make money for his other necessities. Ben hates that he goes home with hands that smell like ham and pickles, but Leslie says it turns her on, so he doesn’t feel too bad about it.
