“Substitute beliefs” is an umbrella concept that can be applied to understanding introjects (fictional and real-life), pseudomemories, non-human alters, and more.
It’s important to note that not all substitute beliefs are harmful–they may be comforting, or even feel empowering. You don’t necessarily have to stop being a ghost! That said, it may be worth mentioning in therapy to make sure it’s a healthy belief to engage with.

We made a simple OSDD/DID educational carrd! we figure this would be useful to send to singlets to help explain terminology/vocab, alter roles, and dos/donts when interacting with systems!
Please spread around if you find it useful!

Okay. I have some thoughts that I think Im ready to put into words. Im making this post mainly because these are things that have happened to me personally and I am still fuming over them despite the fact that they happened some time ago.
First and foremost, fictives are people. That is undeniable fact. We are far more than what our sources portray. You may be very familiar with our sources, but that doesnt mean you know anything about us as people. Especially considering how widely a fictive's connection to their source can very. Many fictives out there at most look like their canonical self while others can have their personalities and/or memories influenced by their sources. It varies from fictive to fictive. At the end of the day we are not our sources.
I dont tend to speak up much when something has upset me, but the apparent lack of understanding of this has actually hurt me rather badly a few times. In one instance I was told by somebody that knows my source that the things I was saying "arent even accurate to [me]" which quite frankly! Made me very angry! Yes perhaps my canon self as written would not speak like me. But the big thing is that I, being a fictive, do not have a writer dictating what I say or do, or how I think or feel. The way we fictives do and say things will always be accurate to us because we are people that decide for ourselves how we do and say things.
Another thing that comes with being a fictive unfortunately is having your canon self's actions and ideals tacked onto you by those that do not understand the basics of fictives being their own people. This is another thing that has hurt me very deeply and I hate admitting that but I cant deny it. Being a fictive of a villain is difficult. Having my genuine care and concern responded to with sarcasm or disbelief because of the way my canon self is written is difficult. Having it be assumed that, according to my personal memories, I did all the same things that my canon self did is difficult. There is never any room to assume anything about a fictive simply because of their source. Our thoughts, feelings, beliefs, actions, etc. can be very similar to our sources, yes. But they can also be completely different and there is no way of knowing which is the case til you get to know us as people.
I have many more thoughts but these are the main points I wanted to get to right now. Perhaps when Im not dissociating my ass off Ill get around to putting more into words.

Levels of consciousness (DID/OSDD)
Think of the levels of consciousness like a line shown below
(NOTE: These are just examples of how things/CAN/ be, this will not be universal to every DID/OSDD system, this is just a visual aide to help you visualize how consciousness may work)
Tumblr media
(Note: the headspace and co-con can overlap, this is just to simplify it)
On one end we have "Fronting", where one or more alter is fully experiencing the external world, and can take executive control of the body. On the other end, we have "unconsciousness" and dormancy, where an alter is essentially in a state of hibernation.
Between these two points, we have "co-consciousness" where one or more alter is conscious, but not fully in the front, and we have the "headspace" or inner world, where alters exist when not in the front (not every system has an inner world)
Alters can exist in and move around multiple different places on this line
Our first example:
Tumblr media
The pink dot shown, an alter, is conscious, not fronting, but very close to the front. From this point you may be able to hear very clear thoughts or speech, and experience passive influence on emotions, actions, and thought patterns. They may be able to see what is going on in the external world from this point
Then we have the next example:
Tumblr media
The purple dot, an alter, isn't very close to the front, but close enough to perhaps be able to hear their thoughts or speech. They may or may not be able to give passive influence, and may be able to see and/or hear what's going on in the external world, but likely not to the extent as the previous pink dot.
Next:
Tumblr media
The blue dot, an alter, is barely co-conscious. Their presence may be able to be felt, and vague emotions/thoughts may be present, they probably wont have a big idea of what's going on in the external world, and communication may be very minimum
Tumblr media
The headspace can be a very large place for many systems, and accessing the front or co-consciousness could be difficult depending on where they are in the headspace. A line will not accurately represent this, so keep that in mind.
The green dot, an alter, is at the very front of the headspace, this may make it easier to access co-consciousness or the front. An alter who "hangs around" this area, may be a frequent fronter, or someone who accesses co-consciousness frequently
Tumblr media
While someone in the red dot's position may have a very difficult time reaching the front or co-consciousness. They may not be a frequent fronter, an alter that doesnt have access to those areas, or even an alter who isnt aware that they're part of a system. Systems themselves may not even be aware that this alter exists, as they're in the back of the headspace, or a very obscure location. There may be barriers keeping them back here, and they may not be able to travel freely throughout the inner world or into higher levels of consciousness.
______
This is not meant to be accurate to everyone's experiences, and it isnt a perfect representation as systems are an extremely complicated and diverse thing, but if you're able to draw from this regardless, that's great!
If it DOESN'T fit any of your experiences, that's also okay! We dont have a known inner world so our line looks more like this
Tumblr media
We don't know what happens behind co-consciousness, there is no memories behind that from anyone, and there is just no access to it if it exists, it's like the others just go to sleep unless they're conscious, in a sense. There could be barriers there.
We also can't clearly communicate in the co-con category, I, the host, can feel emotions, vague thoughts, and passive influence, but there is never clear voices or any good communication
So basically, it's okay if none of the above fits your experiences

DID/OSDD Things ™ (With Less Amnesia)
I have no idea who I am
??????????????
I am 80% sure that we did that thing we were supposed to do
“Sorry, I’m really forgetful”
Is this another headmate or am I just really dissociated?
I’m not entirely sure if I’m in control of my body or not
*Spends years thinking I have an overactive imagination*
Why am I talking like that?
“Oh! I know the answer!” *mouth says a different answer*
It has been three days and I still don’t know who I am
Was that a headmate or just a weird dream?
*astral projects*
?
“Hey! I’m (host)!” (is, in fact, not host)
*Stares at a wall for 6 hours*
Head empty, only confusion
No amnesia? Sounds fake but okay

Something I find extremely disappointing is how much DID is assumed to be “too badly coping” or “crazy” or “not a real disorder” even within the community of mental health advocates and actual professionals despite there being a large number of research studies showing that it is very much a thing and that a large number of people with DID are able to lead cohesive and functioning lives despite the disorder. As a system that has been trying to get involved in local mental health groups, we have actually had our DID used against us as a reason why we aren’t fit to be an advocate which I find personally ridiculous so…
Just because you have DID / OSDD does not mean you can not handle school or work.
Just because you have DID / OSDD does not mean you can’t have a relationship.
Just because you have DID / OSDD does not mean you are incompetent.
Just because you have DID / OSDD does not mean you are crazy.
And also -
DID / OSDD is an actual real mental health condition caused from childhood trauma and it would be really nice if people could stop mentioning “well its heavily debated by professionals” and “it isn’t real” before actually doing their research
Thank you for coming to my TEDtalk.

“There is no logical or natural limit to how fragmented a dissociative patient can become. The more helpful question is What is the integrative capacity of the patient? The lower the capacity for the challenges the patient faced as a child and still faces in the present, the more dissociation will occur as an ongoing coping strategy.”  – Treating Trauma-Related Dissociation
Splitting dissociated parts is a very complicated, confusing topic–it can be difficult to determine when, why, and how it happens. As such, it’s perfectly okay to be unsure of whether a new part has split or not. Some things to know:
Splitting is a coping mechanism in response to stress
Not all stress causes splits
The same stress that causes a split in one person might not cause a split in someone else
The same stress that didn’t cause a split in the past may cause a split later; it all depends on the current coping ability of active parts
Some splits happen quickly; some can take much longer
Keep in mind this infographic pertains to people who already have DID/OSDD (you can learn what causes DID/OSDD [here.])

quick liddol psa on interacting with fictives
treat fictives like people please i am begging you
do not tell them that you simp for them or that you dislike them simply based on their source
do not ask them questions about their source unless they say it’s okay (especially about their relationships with other characters)
ask before discussing their source with them
don’t push your headcanons onto them, or insist that what they experienced was’t real because it didn’t happen in canon
i know it’s exciting that your comfort character is kind of real. i know you want to tell us how much you like/hate us. but please just use basic manners. it is not that hard.
[for those who don’t know- fictives are alters that are based on fictional characters. this doesn’t mean that they act like the canon character.]

“Some alters / parts / headmates are irredeemable”
No, no they aren’t. No part is irredeemable and you really should not be talking about alters / parts like that. It’s a really bad mindset and really disgusting rhetoric.
All alters / parts are redeemable. All alters / parts deserve to heal.
Miss me with that shit.

Every part of your system was created for a reason. Sometimes that reason isn't abundantly clear, but it's always there. In fact, you don't even have to know the reason! But it's important to respect every part of every part, so to speak, because every part is important.
Your system was created the way it was so you could survive.
