There was a brief look of frustration that crossed Madeline’s face when he called her by her old nickname. She opened her mouth to correct him but when he offered to buy drinks she swallowed the complaint. She knew he didn’t mean it as disrespectful and if he kept it up she could always deal with it later. “Why do we even have interns if they just end up making a mess of things?”
“So they can learn or whatever bullshit our internship advertisement spews. I guess it’s helpful, but I figured that they’d at least teach them something at those fancy colleges they all go too,” Theo said with a laugh. He quickly tidied up his workspace, making sure he hadn’t left any form of mess or anything. And he made sure all his important work was locked up. He didn’t want anyone messing with that. “Whenever you’re ready, dear.”

Quinn was never one to be spacey or unfocused on a good day. Ever. So what was going on with her lately? She’d been getting distracted all day at work, to the point where she had almost screwed up assisting in a surgery. She couldn’t afford to keep spacing out, especially when she was scheduled with an overnight shift tonight. Maybe she needed coffee…and not the crap from the cafeteria.
She had a break, so she decided to step out of the hospital to go to the coffee shop just around the corner. The rain and wind were heavy and it was hard to see with her umbrella blowing around in and out of her vision. Just as she rounded the corner, she was met with a solid form impacting with her forcefully. She stumbled back with a gasp, accidentally dropping her umbrella which was quickly blown away by the wind. “Crap, no––ugh, forget it,” she sighed in exasperation, not willing to risk her life in traffic just to get a cheap umbrella. She had a hood on her jacket that could suffice just as well. Her attention drew to the man she had collided with, almost ready to snap his head off, but was struck into silence instead. The weird daze overtook her, and Quinn’s mind went fuzzy and full of a strange sense of nostalgia seeing this man’s face. “I…I don’t think we have. …But I feel as if I know you?”
There was something so familiar, so wonderfully pure about the woman standing in front of him. He wasn’t sure what it was, he had no idea why he felt like he was in love with her or why her presence had made him feel a million times lighter. “I--” He hesitated, he felt like his whole life was flashing before his eyes. Or at least, a portion of his life, one that ran parallel to the one he was living now. One where he wasn’t the head of C.A.R.M.A. R&D but he still worked there, and this... This beautiful and intelligent woman was his girlfriend. But why was he living this life and not that one? It must’ve just... Been a very strange... Dream.
“I feel the same...” Theo said softly, not caring about the rain beating down on his head and shoulders, or how it was soaking right through his suite, or how he’d definitely have to redo all the work he just lost thanks to water damage. All that mattered was this woman standing in front of him. “I’m Theo. I... I don’t know your name but I swear it’s on the tip of my tongue... Why is that?”

“I just don’t normally see people around at this time.” No need to add that she typically made sure that people weren’t around at this time. Hayden would work late whether she was stealing information or not, so it didn’t really look unusual. She crouched down to pick things up and was soon joined by her boss. “My family is all here typically and…I don’t…” her cheeks flushed deeply before finishing quickly, “And I’m not dating anyone.”
“I’m usually here around this time,” Theo said with a laugh. He set down his own work to give Hayden all his attention. He had noticed her from the very start, she was a very quiet and sweet girl, a diligent and competent worker, it didn’t really make sense why she spent so much of her time at C.A.R.M.A. though, she was young, she should have a life. “That’s a shame, I would’ve figured someone as attractive as you would be in a relationship.”

“Oh,” Charlie smacked herself lightly on the head, as if that would help jog her memory. “Of course. Sorry. It’s been a long night for both of us, I suppose.” She offered him a smile, hoping that he wouldn’t take her mistake the wrong way. “So what are you working on this late, anyway?”
“Makes sense,” Theo chuckled softly. “Oh, not too much really? I’m just sorting through todays data, making sure its gotten inputted into the system properly. And generally, it’s something to do. Home’s pretty lonely and going out to a bar to pay overpriced for not that great alcohol. But I don’t mind working late, that’s why I’m in charge of R&D after all, to get important work done.”

“I’ll take that as a compliment.” Charlie had lost count of the times people had assumed she was a student or an intern somewhere. Of course, they were far from right, but she couldn’t really hold a grudge. Looks were deceiving. “Well, I’ll be sure to make a note of that. What’s your name?”
“It is a compliment,” Theo chuckled softly. He shifted a bit uncomfortably when Charlie didn’t recognize him. “I’m Theo Shotwell, head of the C.A.R.M.A. R&D department. I thought you’d know who I am though. It’s fine, I know as second-in-command there’s a lot to remember.”

Once Upon A Dream (AU) ;; Quinn & Theo
Theo was feeling disoriented and confused lately. Nothing was making sense. His dreams never made any sense anymore, giving him the feeling he had lived an entirely different life when he really hadn’t. It was just a dream. That’s all it was. It was his sleep deprived brain screaming at him for not getting any sleep. To add to his frustrated and otherwise poorly disposition, he was cold and wet because it was raining. There was no weather report saying that it’d rain either so he had left the house without his umbrella. And of course he had decided to walk to work that morning so now, in the afternoon, he was on his way home and soaked.
To add to this terrible, no good, very bad day, Theo had slammed right into another pedestrian in his efforts to keep the rain out of his face while he walked. The contents of his bag spilled out onto the wet pavement and he couldn’t help but feel hopeless. He looked up to scold the person when he found himself faced with an equally frazzled redhead that looked like someone out of his dreams. “I uh-- uhm-- you-- have we met?”

“And I thought I was the only one burning the midnight oil,” Madeline commented as she stood a few feet in front of his desk. “I just finished the final form for the new employment assistance act for Metas and I was going to go celebrate with a drink. I think you need to come with me because if you don’t I have a feeling you might break a lot of our expensive toys.” She chuckled slightly at her own joke as she waited for his response.
“Moxxi, you know me well enough by now to know that I’m never not here if I can help it,” Theo chuckled softly, setting down his work to look up at his boss. “I’m not an intern though, I don’t break things. I make things better. But if you insist...” He stepped out from behind his desk and shrugged off the lab coat. “I’m buying though.”

Hayden was at work late, as she typically was. Sometimes it was work related, sometimes it was to steal whatever she could and deliver to the rebels. Thankfully, tonight it was the former. She was just going to put some equipment away in the lab when she heard a voice and screamed. The tray of utensils she was carrying crashed to the floor with a loud bang that was probably heard across town. “Oh my god Sir. What are you doing? Trying to give me a heart attack? I am fairly certain my sister can do that better. Maybe just leave the antics to her.” She took a deep breath and covered her eyes for a moment. “I’m sorry…sir. That was just…you scared me.”
“No need to call me, sir,” Theo muttered, not expecting her to answer though. “I wasn’t, Hayden, you need to be more alert than that. Especially working in a place like this.” He looked over at her with a frown before crossing the lab to help her pick up the equipment that had fallen to the floor. “What’re you doing here in the labs so late? Shouldn’t you be home with a boyfriend or your family at the least?”

“Alexandra,” she corrected reflexively. “Mm, probably, but I just got back from patrols. I wanted to check before I went home. Mum especially has a habit of staying late sometimes.” She shrugged. “If you’re sure. Oh definitely. How’s it today? Got a lot to do?"
“You have a phone, Alex,” Theo said, not caring for her correction. ‘Alexandra’ was a cumbersome name and the four syllables were generally just exhausting. “Yeah, I’m sure. And yes, there’s a lot to do even though the work day is technically over. Your lingering around isn’t really helping me any.”

More often than not, Charlie found herself working into the wee hours of the morning. There was always something that needed to be done, forms that needed to be filled out. As she made her final rounds before clocking out for the night? morning, she noticed one of the labs still open. “Come now,” she tsked as she entered the room. “Is that any way to talk to your boss? Looks like you could use some sleep.”
“It’s late and the interns love to hang around, and well... You have the appearance of an intern in my peripheral’s,” Theo said, not even apologizing. He didn’t feel like he should, he was just tired and fed up, why should he apologize? “And sleep isn’t going to happen for a little longer, I’m re-entering data and other shit into the system because the interns and other workers tend to be mildly incompetent.”

“I was actually looking for my parents. Dr Rees or Dr Smith?” Alexandra replied. “You haven’t seen them, have you, Dr. Shotwell?” She leant against a nearby bench, observing the head of R&D for a moment. “Anything I can help with? Here or…” Alexandra glanced at the papers to see a name that was not Theo Shotwell, “convincing others to do their work?” She was only half-joking. It wasn’t how she was meant to use her powers, but it might do some good.
“They went home for the day, Alex,” Theo said as he closed his folder to hide it from her gaze. “I feel like you should’ve known that. And no, it’s just my shit to deal with. It’s not that bad anyway, I like double checking everyone.” He ran a hand through his hair, “it’s better to know the work is 100% perfect rather than 95%, or even less.”

Theo was standing in the back of a C.A.R.M.A. lab, scribbling down notes on one of his reports. He was doing work for other R&D employees like he always ended up doing even though he was supposed to be having his night off tonight. He was slumped and tired and it could be seen in his eyes that he wasn’t doing well, but he wouldn’t let anyone be clued in on that. No one had to know that Theo needed a break. He heard someone walk into the lab and he sighed heavily, “no, office hours are over. I’m just finishing up some work, I’m not here to help anyone but myself right now so just get out unless you have some fuckin’ brilliant news.”

THEODORE SHOTWELL -- BUTTERFLY EFFECT
Character Name: Theo Shotwell
AU Rank: C.A.R.M.A. R&D Head
AU History Alteration: From a young age, Theo always loved science and discovering new things. He loved helping people in anyway he could. But he had to claw his way through to get where he wanted. And out of college, he took the first job he could, one C.A.R.M.A. offered. And because of all the years that hardened Theo, he found it in him to be bitter about meta-humans and everything they could do. He wished he could do that, but the closest he could get to that was running C.A.R.M.A.’s R&D department.
Anything Else: Not dating Quinn, keeps to himself more than usual. No MetAid Clinic.

Normally Marcy could banter like there was no tomorrow, but today she just was not in the mood. Instead she glared at the doctor over her shoulder while he looked at the large gash across her back. “It was just an accident,” she lied. “I fell.”
“Marcy, I’ve seen you in the clinic enough by now to know that there’s no such thing as ‘just an accident’ with you,” Theo said, trying not to sound too amused. Since the clinic had opened, they had definitely picked up a string of ‘regulars’ who were in the clinic more frequently than others were. Between meta’s and even humans, there were some people that just needed that free help. “But alright, you fell. Can I get you to lay face down on the table just for a few minutes so you’re completely still for me?”

He barked with hoarse laughter, his hand pressed tightly against the multiple stab-like wounds in his stomach. “It’s a real funny story, actually,” he replied, his words slurring together and a grin too wide for the situation plastered across his face. “I was drinking, you know – at home,” he continued, waving his free hand with a dramatic flourish, “and I left my dishwasher open, completely by accident. Well, one thing led to another and I tripped and impaled myself on all my cooking knives. Hilarious, right? I feel like a damn idiot.” He laughed again, a bit too loudly. “Anyway, I don’t trust hospitals, so I came here – I’m sure you can… sympathize.”
Theo just listened to his story and nodded along like he believed what the man laying on the examination table was babbling about, but he really didn’t. Who fell onto their kitchen knives. Also who washed their kitchen knives in the dishwasher with them all sticking up? “Well, aren’t you just the worlds clumsiest drunk then?” He asked with a soft laugh, his hands working carefully but swiftly to clean up the mess that was David’s stomach. “I understand, hospitals can be... Less than ideal. The clinic is open for everyone after all, it’d be rude to refuse anyone service. Just try to be more careful in the future alright? I think I’d rather see you in here after a fight rather than your own stupidity.” Though, Theo figured that David had gotten into a fight, he would play along with the ‘I fell on all of my kitchen knives’ story.

"Well,” Theo chuckled softly as he began to pull on a pair of gloves so he could examine the person a bit more closely. “That is quite the injury you got yourself there. Do you want to tell me the real story or are you going to make something innocent up to make up for the fact that you probably were doing something you shouldn’t have been?” He had grown to really enjoy working at the clinic in the past months, Theo loved helping people and he loved taking care of people like this.

“As much as I love being cooped up in this building to train and learn about things I’ve already perfected and learned about myself, I’d like to go for coffee, would you like to join me?”
“Getting out of the building sounds great right about now,” Theo said with a kind smile. “How much have you been training lately? Or is it just today in particular that you’ve gotten a little antsy?”
