You're poised to leave, used to this BLI-loving spiel from him, but - something in his demeanour changes. “You're just lucky no one else heard ya,” he says. He glances down at the file in your hands and then back up to your face.

Finally free from that conversation, you rush into your apartment, lock the door behind you, and toss the file onto a desk. It's been a long day - you can read it tomorrow.

“It is!” Jimmy sees your expression and suddenly looks a bit sheepish. “Well, with my level of knowledge at least— I know ye’r not the handiest with tech.” All too soon, his expressions goes back to cheery intrigue. You can almost see the lightbulb over his head, Mousekat style. “Speaking of which, are ye’r headphones broken? Heard voices coming from inside last night, and since ya live alone...”

Jimmy’s face lit up immediately, “Sure did!” He smiles at you with a certain pride, “Working tech gave us the chance to do beta testing. Real excited over getting it up and running for real!” He straightens his back and puffs his chest out a bit, as if showing off, “Ya know me, I love keeping up with Better Living. They really do make your life easier.” He sounds genuine. Almost makes the new product sound good. But the memory of that eye graphic is enough to make you feel slightly unsettled. You nod politely, with a slight grimace.

I hook my thumbs in my beltloops and lean back in a way that should look comfortable but is really meant to stabilize the file. “Oh, you know, same old grind... I’m hoping to get promoted to supervisor soon. I’ve been in this position for a good few months... but all we can do is wait and see, right?”

“Supervisor?” Jimmy stares at you with wide eyes before smiling widely and chucking slightly, “First year out of collage and ye’r already aiming for that? Kid, ya sure are ambitious!”

"Oh, [name]! Yeah, we really haven't seen each other in a while." It feels like the file under my shirt starts getting heavier and a sudden wave of urgency flashes through my body. "Maybe we could start hanging out again? You could come over tomorrow after work. Now is not a good time. I got... uh... stuff to do."
