Pet Memorial- Creating a Garden for a Pet that Has Passed
One of the most wonderful ways that you can honour the loss of a pet is in the creation of a pet garden. This type of pet memorial works well with both pet cremation and in-ground burial. Gardens are completely personal and can include herb or floral selections that are specific to your pet. Burial markers are a way to express the love that you had and are used in both cat and dog funerals and pet memorials.
When deciding on a garden you may want permanent flowers, annuals or perennials. The choice will depend upon the weather and seasons. Some choose small fountains so that birds and other creatures can share in the beauty. Others decide on creating a butterfly garden, through the use of organic plants and flowers that don’t have pesticides.
The beauty of a pet garden is that it is eternally growing and changing. It displays the wonders of nature and can be enjoyed by family members as a way to honour your beloved pet. There is a unique bond between pet parents and those that are furred or feathered and it often transcends beyond the feelings that we have within our human groups. It is therefore understandable that some have great difficulty going through the grieving process, feeling powerless and alone. A pet garden is a physical action that you and your family can take to help you get through this difficult time.
When you select garden creation, the process should involve all family members that want to participate. They can help to choose the flowers and plants, decide on what a market should say and even help in creating the overall look and feel of the garden. One of the most important factors in a pet garden is the location. It should be in a place that can allow the reverence needed as family members visit. Some choose to add a permanent bench so that those that want to talk and meditate have a comfortable place to do so.
It’s important to create a pet memorial garden that honours your pet but also encompasses an appeal that is open and welcoming for all that visit. Understand that many of the initial plants and flowers may not last with time and make it a family responsibility to select new ones as replacements. This empowers those that feel the loss so great and gives them the opportunity to participate in an act of love for their lost pet. For children old enough, you can allocate specific responsibilities so that they know that they are doing their part in honouring their lost loved one. This is also an excellent way for them to accept the loss. Kids often have a difficult time processing death and giving them a duty for the garden will assist in the acceptance.
When you lose a beloved pet, there is a sense of loneliness. Normal routines are no longer there and there is an emptiness that can be partially replaced by visiting your pet garden.

At Home Burial for Your Beloved Pet

During the time of a loss of a pet, you and your family are wrapped up in the emotional grief and anguish as well as the loneliness that you are feeling. As you move forward in the coming days, you will be required to make decisions on the best way to honor your pet. Many families grapple over whether they should have a pet memorial ceremony, choose pet cremation or an at home burial. The practice of burying at home is most common in the case of a dog funeral. Those that shared the life and love of your pet can have the same kind of Celebration of Life ceremony that we do with our human friends that we lose.
When we choose at home burial, you do have the choice of cremation with biodegradable urns or burial with scattering urns. For those that don’t select cremation, there are wonderful ways to honor your pet with pet caskets. The choice of which type of at home burial is completely and totally personal and is something that the family should talk about and agree upon to help everyone participate in the grieving process.Burial markers are another way to signify the love of your pet. This gives everyone a location to visit and a place that allows you to express your sadness and loss.
At home-burials have historically been the most common method of saying goodbye to your beloved pet, although a more recent trend has been in the creation of pet cemeteries. These are perfect for families that don’t have access to a yard or outdoor location for an at-home burial, many that live in apartments or for families that are not living in a permanent residence. The pet cemeteries allow for both in-ground and urn burials as well as personalized markers for the families to visit. However, choosing a cemetery brings the same down-side as those for people. If you move away, you might find it difficult to return to visit and honor your pet in a cemetery.
If you choose an at home burial you need to be reassured that it is perfectly normal to go to the gravesite, cry and even talk to your pet. This is part of the process of grieving and having a close location at the home that you all shared is an action that you can take during a time when you feel vulnerable. When we experience loss we are awash with our inability to control our destiny and having the ability to visit a burial place can act as a catalyst to help us move forward.
Pet parents often express the experience of loss as more intense with their beloved pets than even their human relations. This is also quite normal, as our pets show complete devotion to us and live a life of innocence within our emotional structure. While we may have done everything to try to keep them in a healthy and loving environment, we may blame ourselves for their passing. This is part of the cycle of life and having an at home burial is one way to give individuals and families the strength to continue.

Choosing an At Home Goodbye- Loss Of A Pet
The anguish that is felt when you must make the ultimate decision for the end of life for your beloved pet cannot be expressed in words. You may feel a sense of being numb, often in a kind of surreal state and yet you are required to make choices that you simply aren’t prepared for. One of the decisions involves whether you want to be at your Veterinarian’s office or at home when you say your final goodbyes. This is an important consideration for the ease of anxiety for both you and your furred family member.
Ask your Vet if he/she offers in-home services for end of life. One of the primary reasons for making this selection is for the reduction of stress for your pet. They might relate going to the Veterinarian in a negative way, often shaking or anticipating feeling pain. This is not the condition that you want to have them in for their last moments. Another reason might be a lack of mobility due to illness or age. If you have a larger or heavier pet, this makes it difficult to transport them. As a pet parent, you need to focus on what is best for your pet and try to remove the attention from yourself. The advice is a difficult one because both you and other members of the family are heartbroken.
If your Vet does offer in-home visits for this purpose, you will want to prepare yourself and other family members. Make sure that you discuss the requirements with your Vet. They will give you the information that they will need for the proper environment. Typically you will want to ensure that your pet is comfortable and this often involves being in their usual bed or container. The Veterinarian will bring everything that they need and their goal is to make this as quick and painless as possible.
A preliminary conversation with your Vet should include whether you will have your pet cremated or buried, the choice of an urn or casket arrangements in a pet cemetery as well as a memory marker. Talking about this ahead of time will of great help as you move through the process.
You will need to have a conversation with anyone in attendance. All must understand that any crying or upset will cause your pet to be frightened or filled with anxiety. Your last moments with your cherished pet should be one of love, gratitude and be letting them know how much they were appreciated. Most people aren’t sure how they will react in a situation such as this if they haven’t been through it before. However, it is surprising how strong we all can be when we are thinking of the benefit of our pet.
While your pet may be surprised at the arrival of your Veterinarian at your home, in most cases you won’t see the stress that they experience in the medical office. Allow your Vet to sit and talk with you to put your pet at ease and then set up what is necessary. Saying goodbye is one of the most difficult things that we can do.

Experiencing Synchronicity - Loss of a Pet
People that have experienced a loss often only share the concept of synchronicity with those that have gone through the same thing. There is a sense of misunderstanding when you try to relate these situations with those that have never experienced it, and so most pet parents that have lost their beloved family members are quiet about it until others open the door to the conversation to indicate what has happened to them.
Synchronicity in loss is basically conditions that happen that relate to the one that has passed that occurred when they were alive as well as unusual situations that begin to happen as a pattern. Many people will simply turn to you and say “look for signs” and indeed you may have already noticed things happening that you don’t have an explanation for.
With our pets it may be the sound of their collar, the small bell that was attached, hearing their voice as they ask you for their food or even the movement of their bowl on the floor. There are a number of signs and yours will be very personal to your pet, yourself and your family. People of all faiths have had these experiences as well as those that have little or no religious preferences.
Science tells us that this is part of the natural brain process of expectation. We have developed a routine of what we anticipate to hear or see with our pets and this is especially true if they had a long and happy life with us. However, science cannot explain the rare moments that occur that are so out-of-the-norm that they stand out. You may begin to see a repetitive situation such as a name, number or even specific things. Those that become aware of the synchronicities look to them in a spiritual manner as if our pets are with us and even telling us that they are ok.
Your environment is filled with the memories and life of your beloved pet so it isn’t uncommon to see a rare tuft of fur or walk into a room a smell their unique odor. But some have reported getting a sense of sudden extreme cold and then seeing visual movements as well as sounds that were specific to their pet. It is thought that spirits drain the energy of an area and in doing so, create a drop in temperature. If you find that you are seeing or feeling the presence of your pet, accept it in a loving manner and even talk to them. This will also be a way to help you through your grief and it is comforting to think that they may with you, even if it is momentary before their energy moves on.
Most people report that although some of these synchronicities seem to happen a lot in the beginning, they slow in appearance and some even state that they stop completely. The latter occurs when you have come to better emotional terms with your loss and for those that have gone through it, they indicate that they feel their pet is comfortable in left. If you join a pet loss support group you will find that many openly share their experiences of synchronicity and it is at these moments that the move to the next levels of acceptance and love

Pet Loss Support Groups

The emotions involved in losing a pet can be so incredibly intense that people often find themselves fluctuating from normal daily life to deep states of depression. Our pets are part of our routine and we anticipate everything from their greetings when we come home to sleeping with us. A loss can catapult our senses into a state of the unknown and when we experience the extremes of grief we feel as if we are alone and lost. It’s important to understand that these emotional aspects are often felt by many members of the family. One of the best ways to help to get through the process is by joining a pet loss support group.
Grief healing can often be a journey and each one is very personal. Coping with the process can be overwhelming and lonely and pet loss support groups are an excellent way to have therapy with those that understand what you are going through. This is especially important if you have friends or family members that don’t seem to be empathetic to your pain.
The support groups are typically made up of a moderator that helps to guide the group and other people that are feeling the same heartbreak that you are feeling. While everyone’s story is different, you will understand that you all share quite a bit in common. The goal of the group is to offer in-person, online and even telephone support for those that are going through the throes of grief. Support groups help you and anyone within your family to understand and tap into the coping mechanisms that you need.
Many pet parents that have lost their beloved family member may not have ever attended a support group in the past. The emotional turmoil can interrupt our lives, wreak havoc and make us feel as if we are caught up in a never-ending tornado of grief. Support groups are there to help in the sharing as well as assist in empowering everyone to feel more grounded. Your first meeting is often the most difficult, as your pain is like an open wound, but be aware that with each succeeding meeting, you will begin to feel a bit better. You will want to make a concerted effort to keep attending and as you do, you will also bond with those that are in the group. Each of you has a story to tell and talking about your pet is part of the grieving process.
As you share within the group you will find that you and others will grasp onto both the happy and sad memories. There will be moments of laughter as you tell the funny stories and then minutes of tears. Within time, you will come to realize that the happy memories begin to replace those of sadness.
Some of the members of your group will contribute with ideas and methods that are helping them get through the loss of their pets. This environment is exceptionally good for you, especially if you are feeling helpless and alone. When we go through an emotional loss we often feel powerless and members of your support group can offer ways to help you and your family cope.
