Why do you keep pushing? It’s j-just.. you…y-you’re confusing me.Confusion is part of it. That’s how you find out if something’s there. Emotions are never black and white. They’re more like symptoms.
This’ll be one of my favourite scenes of the episode, I’m sure. :)

Analyzing the “bad” acting on Shadowhunters
This has been a hot topic in this fandom and just the general viewers, about the “bad” acting in shadowhunters. Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve seen bad acting, and I don’t think this show deserves that stigma.
Let’s start with Clary Fray portrayed by Kat McNamara
People have really hated on Kat’ acting since the pilot episode. She got a lot of hate on Tumblr, Twitter, and on Facebook. I don’t think the hate is warranted at all.
From the beginning of the show I felt the utter need to hug Clary and tell her that everything was going to alright. Kat has a very earnest performance. She is raw and not too flashy.
She is very doe-eyed, yet there is a fire inside of her that I think Kat does a great job showing.
Alec Lightwood portrayed by Matthew Daddario
Matthew has done a wonderful job of showing so many levels of a character. The way Alec acts with his sister, is different from how he acts with his parabatai, Jace, to how he acts with his parents and Clary and Simon.
His eyes are truly the window to his soul. Small twitches and shortened breaths, can really give off so much emotion that his character is bottling up. Every time Matt is on screen, I always find myself leaning in just enraptured by what he is displaying on screen.
Magnus Bane portrayed by Harry Shum Jr
Harry has been an amazing spark to the character of Magnus Bane. His fluid motions, to his expressive face, his amusing smile, and the heartbreaking eyes. When I watch Harry on screen, I’m watching Magnus Bane.
He has proven himself to understand the character of Magnus Bane so well. I saw a lot of criticism that Magnus on the show was too vulnerable and not strong enough. To me, I’ve always thought that vulnerability is a strength. It shows that one has seen a lot, which one has loved a lot, and one has hurt a lot. And that is why Harry Shum Jr. has done Magnus Bane, justice.
Izzy Lightwood portrayed by Emeraude Toubia
I feel like Emeraude is very overlooked in regards to her acting. She has given us a badass female character, but she has also given us a vulnerable and loving female character.
I find Emeraude’s quiet acting, so endearing and open. Her eyes are so dark and soulful, that when she’s hurting, I’m hurting with her.
I also think, that it’s so easy to watch shadowhunters and just see Izzy as a badass female character who owns her sexuality, but there is so much more to what Emeraude is giving. Her acting has shown so much emotion for her family, especially her brother, Alec and doing what is right.
Simon Lewis portrayed by Alberto Rosende
I don’t think I’ve seen any hate or dislike for Alberto’s portrayal of Simon Lewis. This goes to show how amazing he is. Alberto has honestly blown me away by how honest and versatile he is, as Simon Lewis.
He is so charming and relatable that I can’t help but grin every time he’s on screen. His comedic timing is on point. His emotional scenes however, are the ones to praise about.
The pain and utter fear that Alberto gave us when Simon was losing his mind during his vampire transition was phenomenal. He truthfully pulled at my heart strings.
Finally, last but not least, Jace Wayland portrayed by Dominic Sherwood
I’m actually really surprised that some people dislike Dominic as Jace, and say that he’s a bad actor. He has given us so much emotion in Jace and standoffish-ness. His chemistry with Kat is like a bubbling waterfall. It flows down, and then crashes when it hits the rocks. It’s subtle chemistry, which makes you feel like every time they’re on screen together, that you’re intruding on an intimate moment.
Once again, I’m also blown away by Dominic’s emotional scenes. As Jace, who is guarded, but feels so much, the boy who loved too much. He has down a great showing retrain in the midst of pain. With a clench of the jaw, the turn of the head to hide what Jace is feeling, and to the aversion of eyes, Domininc has sold me as a character that had nothing, but still made it through to where he is now.
I think it’s so easy to judge this show based off the characters in the books. I understand. But, I also understand that, in a tv show, you can’t keep your characters one dimensional, they would all feel wooden and boring. Each actor’s job on this show, is to give honest portrayals of these characters. And I think, they have done a beautiful job.
Thank you for reading.
