Over the years, Judy Davis earned a reputation for being a difficult actress, despite her talent. On the set of Dark Blood, director George Sluizer, “Rang Woody Allen who directed her [in Husbands And Wives, 1992, for which she received an Oscar nomination] and asked him, ‘How did you deal with her?’ He said, ‘Well, you know, I gave her the papers, and then I never talked to her again’.”

For some reason, Ms. Davis did not take a liking to River. In fact, she constantly referred to him as “Frat Boy”. River’s assistant, Abby Rude was there the whole time they were filming: “She made him mad.” River once tried to be friendly by asking her a question about her family. She responded angrily, “What is this? Frat Boy’s question time?” River liked to be in character before filming began. To do this, he sometimes went into his trailer and played his favorite music very loudly. He especially liked the band, Fugazi. This seemed to make Ms. Davis angry. She gave River such a hard time that he called his family and girlfriend, Samantha Mathis, to be with him while he was filming in Utah.

Because there was so much obvious tension between his two stars, Sluizer agreed to wait to do the love scenes until the very end of filming in Los Angeles. He even agreed to use a body double, whenever possible, for River’s character, because River could not face doing the scenes with her. “He asked me if we could postpone [them] till the last days of shooting,” recalls Sluizer, “because he didn’t want to have physical contact. He says, ‘I get shivers; I have goose pimples about having to do this.’ So, I said, ‘Okay. We did other stuff which was less promiscuous.”

While on camera, Judy would sometimes say her lines so quietly that River had a difficult time hearing his cues. “I remember one scene, he was really pissed off. He had a line, she was supposed to stand behind him to whisper something, and he had to react. However, she would stand too far away. I would say ‘Camera…’, then he would look around and she was not there. He said, ‘Come closer. You know I need your line to say mine.’ She said, ‘No, you don’t need it; I come when I want to.’” Sluizer observed, “She would start talking to him far away, then would suddenly approach him at the last possible moment, so that he could not tell where she was. Other actors would have screamed and shouted. But, River was so introverted and quiet, he kept his anger bottled up tight. But, he complained to me, ‘I don’t fucking want to do it like this anymore.”

Even in death, River could not gain any sympathy from Judy Davis. When the cast and crew of Dark Blood reported to the set the day after Phoenix’s death, an emotional Joanne Sellar asked them to form a large circle so they could pay tribute. Many of River’s colleagues were near tears as Jonathan Pryce asked them to join hands to wish River’s spirit a happy journey. “There were some fifty people holding hands, just in memory of the boy-to put our hands together. She rejected this, I’ll say, communal togetherness,” recalled Sluizer
