Petitetiaras’ 20 Day Disney Couples Challenge
4. Last impressions (your favorite scene where the couple ends up): Tiana and Naveen
One of my favorite couples of all time, and definitely one of my favorite romantic endings. Why? Because after Lottie’s kiss didn’t work, Tiana and Naveen decide that staying together, even as frogs, was better than losing each other to feed their own ambitions, if you will. After they married, and changed back to humans, they returned to their original plans: to help each other build Tiana’s dream, her own restaurant, and Naveen being at her side to “complete” her dream. A lot of people adore Tiana for being a Disney rarity, a workaholic, but few give Naveen credit for gaining a sense of responsibility and willingly helping and encouraging Tiana. (Talk about character development!!)
We almost NEVER see what happens “after happily-ever-after,” and even though it’s brief, it’s no less powerful. Though Naveen is a prince, and no doubt gained his parents’ approval back with his matured attitude and behavior, he doesn’t slack off at all or ask for money to assist Tiana. No, they gave the money she earned all her life to the building’s owners, and worked TOGETHER to make this place look fabulous and become a huge hit. I hate it when people say Tiana “gave up her dream” when she fell in love with Naveen. Nothing of the sort! She simply learned that there are more important things in life, something her father had tried to teach her: love, family, and friendship. Just like Naveen learned to be responsible and take life seriously, Tiana learned to loosen up and have a little fun. They learned from each other and improved each other unconsciously, while still loving each others’ flaws.
I honestly don’t talk about this movie or this couple enough, and I really should. This is more than just a “racially equal” film to add to Disney’s department; Tiana’s character, adventures, and romance are all wonderful and unique and, sadly, underrated and simply labeled (by people, not by Disney) as “the only black princess, yay.” No, there’s so much more than that, and this ending empathizes that even more than the rest of the film. Naveen never had anything to look forward to in life; he just rode on waves of fame and money and aimlessly flirted with ladies because he thought that was all he had going for him. Tiana practically drowned herself in work and savings, determined to open the restaurant her father never had the chance to see happen. Both of them ended up losing themselves in the process, and during their adventure as frogs, they learn from each other and become better people as a result. Both of them thought their life was just fine until meeting each other, and slowly their (intended or not) arrogance diminishes as they get to know each other and fall in love. Honestly…. if that doesn’t make a great love story, I don’t know what does. Love this movie, love this couple, and absolutely love how they end up and we get a glimpse of their married life. :) <3
