“Oh, delicious.” he agreed with a vigorous nod. “They don’t know what they’re missing.” James listened intently with a smile as she revealed quietly that she had not been in the Navy for long. “You could have fooled me. You’re a natural.” he complimented her, shaking his head. “I’ve been in four years—long but not too terribly long. I studied engineering up at Cambridge but I’ve always been drawn to the sea.” he explained. He made no mention of his father, and was relieved that she did not either. James was so used to people either making assumptions about him because he was the son of the First Sea Lord, or making comparisons between the two. It was nice to be judged on his own merits. Unfortunately, it was such a rare occasion in which he was.
He sat down across from her with a grateful nod, setting his cap in his lap. “Of course. I quite agree—the mobilization of the entire country is the only thing that will defeat the Germans.” Already, London had undergone a transformation. He was only a boy during the last war, and he had been confined to the Cornwall estate with his mother and brother, in any event. But from what he had heard, the entire country had made a shift in terms of industry and readiness for the coming storm. It was comforting to know that he was going to sea with the nation behind him, so to speak.
“Really?” James asked with a surprised smile when Byrne stated that she would be going to sea the same day. “What a coincidence! Perhaps we’ll run into each other at the docks.” He paused to take a sip of tea before answering her question. “I’m posted to the Suffolk as a gunnery officer. And you?”

‘ it’s good to see your face. ‘
He had been in captivity for months, and had fully expectedto die in occupied France. Somehow, he hadn’t. James knew not whether toattribute his escape to sheer force of will or simply luck—either way, he was gratefulto be alive. He wanted nothing more than to get back to some form of normalcy, and help his comrades end the war. However, when the British ship had found himaboard the fishing boat manned by members of the Resistance, he had been immediatelytaken to the medical bay for treatment.
When one of the nurses stated that he had a visitor, he satup, his expression at first confused, but then delighted when he recognized her.“Miss Byrne.” he greeted her softly, smiling. “It’s good to see yours too. It’sbeen such a long time.” He hadn’t seen her since before he had become a pilot, which had been well before he had been shot down and captured. “How have youbeen?”

James Norrington did nothing wrong. His only crime was being a Jane Austen hero in a Disney movie based on a theme park ride.
