yeah, seriously, it was so weird. And unfortunately I feel like there's always that kind of person with any non-skinny character and it really sucks.
it doesn't surprise me that gay men are less weird about it tbh. i've been in quite a few fandoms and had characters with this body type as my fave in them and it's always basically the same story. But I have found some people who write Ray x fem!reader who can appreciate Ray as he is without having to be ironic about it.
I do try to avoid seeing things that will upset me, but sometimes some things just slip through the cracks anyway. tbh I posted my little rant in a moment of weakness late at night lol but i totally get what you're trying to say and appreciate you looking out for my well-being!
No problem! It was a nice chat and I'm glad we understand each other.
Okay, but Ray is fat? His actor literally says he was called "The fat Ghostbuster" (which I don't agree with as that stuff isn't okay) but Dan Akroyd has always been heavier set and so has Ray?
idk i dont think the word of someone who was being hard on himself for gaining weight is super reliable
and like... i'm not saying "ray isn't fat" because it would be a bad thing if he was. I'm saying it bc people's body image these days is so skewed that anyone who's not perfectly thin is fat. like, i'm just saying that to me ray has just a regular body and i think its weird how fixated the fandom is on him being the fat guy and overexaggerating about his weight.

Yeah, admittedly it's just a few people who ship themselves/their OC's with Ray that have to be weird about it and turn his weight into a joke/exaggeration. The post that bothered me enough for me to make my original post on this topic was basically a person saying "wow i can't believe i'm attracted to the fat guy instead of one of the skinny ones!!!" and I was like "one, why does that bother you so much? and two, is he REALLY fat or are you projecting because you feel ashamed of yourself for no good reason for being attracted to a regular guy instead of a stereotypical 'hot' guy?". But the majority of the fandom don't feel the need to bring it up at all for the most part.
I totally agree that "fat" isn't necessarily a negative thing, and I'm happy for you that your feel comfortable with using the word. But I definitely think people using it as a negative to describe Ray sometimes and that's what really bothers me.
And you're welcome! I'm glad you see that I wasn't trying to be insulting with the point I was trying to make about Ray.

I do agree with you for the most part, and I'm not saying Ray is skinny. I'm saying that I think that calling him fat when he has a perfectly average body type can warp what people perceive as fat. And unfortunately, most people still think of being fat as a bad thing, so it just makes the pressure to be what people think of as skinny even worse for more kinds of people.
And again, it wouldn't be a bad thing if he was fat, and I even think if it helps you to think of him as fat to make yourself feel more confident in your own body, that's not a bad thing. The problem is with everyone in the fandom calling him fat and making a big deal out of it when it's something that really isn't there. And then that leads to them turning him into the "funny fat guy" stereotype and ignoring everything else about his character, even going so far as to exaggerate how naive he is or just making him straight up dumb when he isn't.
I'm not sure what word I would use to describe his body type. Average is the first word that comes to mind, but I'm not sure if that's the word I'm looking for. I wish there was a better word for being somewhere in between.
Why is his being fat an "important trait"? Is it for the sake of representation, or because the character wouldn't work without it? Because I can see the logic in the first case, but the second one I flat out disagree with, and unfortunately it seems to be the mindset of most of the fandom, which leads to the exaggerating and stereotyping I mentioned earlier. But I think his personality is completely independent from his appearance. He was never written as the "fat Ghostbuster". So in that way, his weight is unimportant.
It does seem to be what a lot of people fixate upon, though, and in the case of using him as representation and to build confidence in yourself, I completely understand and I don't have a problem with that at all. But that doesn't seem to be the case a lot of the time. A lot of the time, people are doing it to make a joke of it, or to make a joke of themselves for being attracted to him even though he doesn't fit the typical image of an "ideal man", and when that happens it annoys me, especially since he really isn't THAT far outside of the ideal.
tl;dr people are just really weird about Ray's appearance when he's just a regular guy and it makes me feel like people's standards are too high for their own good

bein a bit hypocritical aren't we?
no? i don't see how. I've never called ray fat, and I've never acted like my being attracted to him made me special in any way. Is it because I reblogged that post about artists who draw ray fat? cuz there's a difference between supporting an artist's decision to draw him fat and thinking he is fat in canon. kinda like I support artists who draw rgb!ray with heterochromia, but I don't think it's canon to the show (because it isn't, if they wanted him to have one green eye they would have colored one of his eyes green).

A husband who loves you so much that he wants you to be close to him all the time – his hand resting on your thigh, on your shoulder, on your palm while you're lying together, his fingers brushing yours as you walk side by side, his lips placing a tender kiss on your temple as you wait together for the light to change at the pedestrian crossing.
