After hearing that some classmates were still having trouble with the Toulmin Model of argumentation, I thought a well known example could be helpful.
We all remember Charlie Sheen's rant a few years ago, but here is a different look at it from Dr. Drew, uploaded to Youtube by user "Erica."

Saw this on imgur, unfortunately sourceless.
A very cynical view of a top-down hierarchy system!

Add "Corporations hold the most power in society" to the list and check out my post
The possibilities of where power comes from on page 253 made me think about the government. I know that one of the possibilities is about government being the most powerful institution, but I’m talking about some of the other ones that can define our government.
For instance:
- Power is held by...

The government is the most powerful institution in society Corporations are the most powerful institutions in society
OCAG P.253
My first thought is that the government is the most powerful, but after more examination, I think that corporations control the government in today's special interest group laden America.
My conclusion of this brief analysis is that money is the source of all power.
What are your thoughts?

Always wondered this...
Yo, Grammar: What's up with "[sic]"?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you do not include ā€œ[sic],ā€ the reader will assume that you made the silly grammar errors.
Tumblr media
Although you probably won’t be using ā€œ[sic]" too often when you cite statements from published books (which theoretically were proofread by editors), you will be using "[sic]" to death when you cite from Twitter, Tumblr, and Facebook, where grammar errors abound.

"LetsĀ [sic]Ā get lost.ā€

"Keep calm cause [sic] your [sic] beautiful.ā€

BARCELONA — The Samsung Galaxy S5 has arrived, and it wants you to give it the finger.Ā  On Monday, Samsung announced the Galaxy S5, its premium smartphone followup to the Galaxy S4, and a challenger to Apple’s iPhone 5s for the top smartphone in the world. The Galaxy S5 features a crisp (and large) 5.1-inch display; Yes, Samsung’s Galaxy S5 doesn’t just share a letter and a number with Apple’s iPhone 5s.
I have a feeling the Apple v. Samsung battle has only just begun.

It Depends...
On page 31 on Simmons book, she claims that "proof does not exist in the subjective frame" and that the answer to every subjective question is "It depends". Do you agree with her claim? Can you think of any example of a subjective question where the answer is not "it depends"?
I'm having a hard time refuting this claim. Perspective has such a profound effect on subjectivity that seemingly cannot provide "proof." Perhaps that is why I cannot prove this claim as true or false!

Found this atĀ http://www.geekfill.com/2012/05/11/how-to-more-out-of-google/
Shared it with the researchers in my group, thought the class could all benefit.
A valuable, underrated skill!

Similarly: The last man on earth sat alone in a room. Ā There was a knock at the door.
While reading what Simmons wrote about the very different ways people may interpret stories made me think of the 6-word novel that is often attributed to Hemingway, ā€œFor sale: baby shoes, never worn.ā€
What do you think about what this story tells?

MOST FRUSTRATING THING ABOUT LINKEDIN? It’s impossible to find a professional looking headshot for your profile picture!
Stop by the CPE conference room on March 4th from 2-6pm to get your picture taken by a professional photographer for your LinkedIn or other social media sites.
Then, stick around from 4:15-6:15pm in the CPE resource room for a panel discussion of three professionals about the best practices for using LinkedIn for job searches and networking!

Think of the immense responsibility of coordinating the opening ceremony to send a message and persuade the entire world!
What do you think their intended message was?
