if I see another post saying that the captain didn't come out at all during the series I will flip.
SEASON 5 EPISODE 5
CARPE DIEM
"Well, no, actually. If I'm the one to go well.... there's SOMETHING I OUGHT TO TELL YOU."
we get his death
Who's there? NONE OTHER THAN MISTER HAVERS HIMSELF
"i.... i...." "I KNOW" he KNOWS that the captain LOVES HIM.
THE SWAGGER STICK EXCHANGE.
"Anthony" "James" THE NAMES? ITS PERSONAL!!!!!
"I was no hero." Yes, but you were a BRAVE man."
FANNY SAYS THAT! TO HIM! A HOMOSEXUAL CHARACTER! SHE DIDNT LIKE THE WEDDING (eventually she did) BUT LOOK HOW FAR EVERYONE HAS COME!!!
The Captain is gay. The Captain comes out. You just have to pay attention!!!!!
MY ANALYSIS IS HERE

banking on your daughter to make a different choice
also the slightly shaky cam in the last scene as he watches havers wave and fade away i didn't even notice until i made the gif but it adds SO MUCH to his emotions at this moment. like taking a shaky breath. him still grieving over it, but learning to suppress that emotion from a life+death time of experience, so it only comes out as a shiver. ben wilbond truly put so much thought into this character; the captain is the Most Character to ever Character
edit: also just another parallel I noticed but his face is lit up similarly??? half light/half dark tenebrism that subtextually calls back to this scene of choice??? kitty in the shadows because she chose selfishly, the cap in the end a mix of both to reflect the nuance and complexity in his decision??? one shadowed by sunlight the other by the moon, present and memory, action and reflection, how one is affected by another, etc etc

The Captain (BBC Ghosts) + queer culture & history references
Brighton is the queer capital of the UK. During the 1920s and 1930s, Brighton started to flourish as a seafront escape for LGBTQ+ and many gay and lesbian pubs started to establish themselves. During the Second World War, the city was filled with soldiers. Many women and men in the forces were meeting other lesbians and gay people for the first time in their lives. Kylie Minogue has maintained her status as a gay icon for decades. The pop queen has been a long-standing and committed advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. The singer says feels ‘solidarity’ with her gay fans after they ‘protected’ her during tough times. Elton John came out as gay in 1992. He’s a huge advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and is undoubtedly one of the most famous openly gay musicians of all time. Elton John and his husband were among the very first couples to have a civil partnership in the United Kingdom. Musical theatre has been associated with the LGBTQ+ community, especially gay men, for years. There’s also a common stereotype of gay men loving opera, which has a good bit of truth, historically. Difference was tolerated in the theatre, and men who liked other men knew it was easier to meet one another if they hung out with theatre people. Cole Porter’s homosexuality was an open secret. He was married for convenience, and his wife knew he was gay from the start and didn’t mind it. His lyrics were full of not very hidden double entendres. ‘The Wizard of Oz’ became an enduring part of LGBTQ+ community and culture, and actress Judy Garland is considered a gay icon. The expression ‘Friend of Dorothy’ became a code phrase used by gay men to identify themselves to each other. Chandler from ‘Friends’ was often believed to be gay, both by characters on the show and by people in real life. Originally, the writers did want to make him a gay character but straightened him out instead when they were told to ‘write it gay and play it straight.’ ABBA is one of the most beloved bands for the queer community, and Dancing Queen remains one of the most ubiquitous gay anthems of our time. When ABBA returned with a new album, the band said, ‘It was the gay community who underpinned the comeback.’

I think my absolute favourite bbc ghosts storyline is Kitty teaching the Captain to have spontaneous fun and him ending up spending hours talking to himself about ants

gay people can never say "I love you." It's always some weird shit like "I shall miss you havers."

The best advice i can give any creator is do it before you're good at it, do it BEFORE you're happy, do it while you suck, do it while you're doubting yourself and get stuck the fuck in, because waiting around to be "good enough" is a motherfucking trap of the highest degree. You'll get good along the way and better after every project is complete. Remember, this is the greatest thing you've ever created, and then you'll do something else. You're only ever gonna get better, but not if you stand still.
