hii would you like to tell me about the relationship between dee and the waitress? i see the appeal, and i love seeing posts about it, but i need more substance. i despise how it's always about charlie and the waitress going way back, or how she has been in love with dennis. dee has been there by their side the whole time, she saw all of it happen. she needs to have more than hate towards her, maybe she tried to be dee's friend before to get close to dennis, but she saw how utterly insane she was so it turned into something else they don't talk about. maybe she ghosted her as a friend, maybe dee hates or doesn't even acknowledge her to this day because she did this to her. i dont know tell me anything you want about them. sending love your way

in short i like the contrasting dynamics of their relationship that were (probably accidentally) created by the various narrative decisions of the show. the large gaps in their relationships create a lot for the audience to fill in.

they appear largely unfamiliar and hostile towards each other early on but went to high school together

the waitress remembers this, dee does not (or claims to). the waitress claims they "go way back"

they are the main two female characters in a male dominated cast meaning they are often forced together narratively but are not friends

dee is the only one in the gang not in a "gruesome twosome". the waitress is the most frequently recurring character. (i wrote more about that here)

in recent years they have been presented as foils of each other. but neither ever succeed

we see large amounts of dee's life and wants/desires but the waitress's internal life is quite a mystery. we know what she doesn't want and some of her struggles, but she rarely has wants/goals. when she does, they are never followed up on narratively and are often quite simplistic (e.g. nail salon, baby). tbh some of this is bad writing for the waitress but it creates the side effect that the waitress seems, despite being caught in the gang's cycle of abuse, distant. she has her own life. she goes through style changes and sobriety ups and downs. we never find out why - because the gang doesn't care to ask. this creates the effect that the waitress still has a piece of herself separate from the gang.

dee is entangled fully in the gang. but in s17, she tried to keep something secret from them - this involved the waitress. for dee, you could argue that the waitress symbolises a partial escape from the gang.

the waitress has slept with everyone else - only dee is left

the waitress's narrative arc in relation to charlie has ended. she is no longer charlie's love interest / stalking victim. this is FASCINATING to me because the show is a non-serialised sitcom - and yet she is a long-standing love interest that has just kind of fizzled out. therefore her character has had to adapt and change. despite real change being forbidden in sunny!!! this is so fun to me!!! and the show seems to have passed her on to dee!!
