Origination- it is the beginning or creation of something. That is what has been on my mind lately as I am researching the creation stories of different cultures for a class essay. As I explored the many creation stories that exist throughout the world, I discovered something fascinating about each and every origin story; each story is more similar to each other than one would think. With the various, different cultures around the world as well as the different values and beliefs these cultures hold, it is interesting to see the way in which they believe the world and humankind came to be.
Most creation stories start off with this mass space of emptiness where there is no light, only dark, inhabited by no living, breathing human besides monsters or what we know as gods or a God. From there, a process starts whether through a miraculous conception or through a long line of mating until one, or three great gods are born, and from there these gods become pivotal to their creation story. From there, humankind is created in some extraordinary way by these gods.
In some stories, humans are made straight from the god using a body part of some sort, while in others, the god will breathe life into an object that is supposed to represent a human. From there, humans are born. The stories are not quite as simple as I am making them sound, in fact some are so complex it would be difficult to sum it up into a short post, but overall these creation stories are very much similar if not the same.
My takeaway of these stories is that humans are very similar- living in a world where we seek to understand that which we cannot explain. More importantly, these stories are kept alive because each culture and each individual within these cultures seeks to be a part of something bigger than themselves- something in which they can relate to others and where they can build a community. We are all humans- intelligent, creative and with an insatiable curiosity that keeps us seeking answers to that which may have none.
