Rules of DIY:
if it's a skill, there's rules you can learn
if it's an art, rules are not your concern
make it fucked up or you won't make it
if it's already broken, you can't break it
anything can be fixed with gorilla glue
except for pleather, and also you

So, you're sick and tired of paying out the ass for Spotify, sick and tired of your favorite songs being removed from streaming services, and want to have a cool discord status like everyone else?
Well, I have a solution for you!
Piracy!
The following is a comprehensive, straight forward guide to building an extensive music library for free.
Disclaimer to start off: if you can afford to support smaller independent artists, please do. A lot of these bands have options to "Pay what you can" or have their albums for real cheap. I always purchase music from smaller artists, but of course not everyone has the means to do so. Pirate only from big bands if you can.
So, to begin, what you're going to need is an external hard drive. You can get around 2TB for $100 CDN (72 USD), which is more than sufficient for most people.
Then, once you have that bought, you're going to want to install a few programs:
MusicBee (or any other music library app such as MediaMonkey, Foobar2000, AIMP, etc. This guide will be for MusicBee though, but most instructions are easily modified with google searches)
SoulSeek
Bandcamp Downloader
QBittorrent (or any other torrenting program)
Install all these onto your hard drive into folders of their own so you can easily browse them. This allows you to plug your hard drive into any computer and play from the drive directly
Next, you're gonna want to find the music you want to download. You have three options for this:
Soulseek
Soulseek is an interesting program that allows you to browse the libraries of other users, and download from them directly
When you first launch the app, it'll ask you to register a username and password
Choose any username and password, and click login
It'll ask you to set a folder to share as well, set it to the folder where your music is located.
You'll come to this page, and you'll want to click "Search"
For this illustration, I'll search for Death Atlas by Cattle Decapitation. You can also search by artist as well
Here you'll see a scrollable list of all files you can download. Simply right click on a folder that looks good, and click "download folders"
In the downloads tab, you can right click on the completed files and click "open folder" to see where it got downloaded to (this can be changed in the options)
Bandcamp Downloader
So, Bandcamp is a bit more hit or miss, but it's great to bulk download entire artist's discographies, or grab any albums that aren't on Soulseek yet
Simply find the Bandcamp page of an artist you either want to download an album or albums from, and copy the URL
You can set it to either download the entire discography, or just the album in the URL you pasted.
Piracy Sites
One last option you have, are straight up piracy sites such as PirateBay, or Metal Tracker. I find that these are more mediocre in music selection (save Metal Tracker which has a shit load of metal torrents). PirateBay is good for more mainstream artists like Taylor Swift, but for metal or electronic music, you're better off with Bandcamp, specialty sites, or Soulseek.
So, to use PirateBay, simply enter the site (with Adblock on, as it's usually plastered with porn ads), search for the artist/albums you want and click the magnet link
(Metal Tracker is similar, but it's in the sidebar)
The torrent will open in your torrent application. Simply select where you want it downloaded to, and click the start button)
Now that you have your songs, time to set up your library!
I have mine set up as follows:
Though you can set it up however you want. I just find this is easier for navigating than having everything in one giant folder.
In MusicBee:
"Scan Folders for New Files", then choose your music folder, and select proceed (hence why one folder with a trillion subfolders is best, you only need to have it scan the main folder, and it'll scan all the sub folders)
This will sort everything by artist and album, and automatically add album art as well.
That's all there is to it!
Now, to get it working with discord, there's a few steps:
Install Music Presence
If on Windows 10/11, download this plugin (the .dll file)
Edit preferences
4. Enable this
5. Done!
Now all your music you downloaded will appear in your discord, just like Spotify users get
And that's how you get your own personal music library, complete with Discord integration.

Story about a ragtag space crew who crashland on a new planet and have to pull together to survive. After multiple years, they're able to send out a distress signal and activate emergency systems to get themselves back into space, but something goes wrong and the rescue vessel doesn't arrive. They manage to find a way off-planet and into their own vessel which is still in orbit, right as a major disaster wipes out their camp planetside; as they leave orbit systems on their vessel start to fail, and it becomes clear that these were preinstalled failsafes. They're being sabotaged! What big secret have they uncovered, that The Company is so desperate to bury??
There isn't one. The Company gave them up for dead and only became aware of their survival when their distress systems called fro a rescue vessel. Now they're trying to wipe them out at a distance in a plausibly deniable way before they reach civilisation, because if it becomes known that people survived then they'll be owed almost a decade's worth of back pay as per their employment contracts, and that would reduce shareholder profits this quarter, which is of course unacceptable.
