We are an exceptional model of the human race. We no longer know how to produce food. We no longer can heal ourselves. We no longer raise our young. We have forgotten the names of the stars, fail to notice the phases of the moon. We do not know the plants and they no longer protect us. We tell ourselves we are the most powerful specimens of our kind who have ever lived. But when the lights are off we are helpless. We cannot move without traffic signals. We must attend classes in order to learn by rote numbered steps toward love or how to breast-feed our baby. We justify anything, anything at all by the need to maintain our way of life. And then we go to the doctor and tell the professionals we have no life. We have a simple test for making decisions: our way of life, which we cleverly call our standard of living, must not change except to grow yet more grand. We have a simple reality we live with each and every day: our way of life is killing us.

"I prefer maritime laws over laws on land. Maritime laws only exist to guarantee safe passage. There are no loopholes or biases to favor more powerful vessels. Every ship is equal, and no one is more powerful than the sea."

I have lived through much, and now I think I have found what is needed for happiness. A quiet secluded life in the country, with the possibility of being useful to people to whom it is easy to do good, and who are not accustomed to have it done to them; then work which one hopes may be of some use; then rest, nature, books, music, love for one’s neighbor — such is my idea of happiness. And then, on top of all that, you for a mate, and children perhaps. — What more can the heart of a man desire?
Leo Tolstoy (via h-o-r-n-g-r-y)

It’s true, you are terrible at a lot of things. But there are a couple of things that nobody else does as well as you do. It drives me bananas that you will throw yourself away completely because of one or two things that you think are wrong about you. That’s what breaks my heart. You got to ignore those and lean towards the things that make you like yourself. Forget everything else. Fake it. Fake your way upwards.

This is what pipelines threaten to destroy. Ecologically intact environments have allowed the earth its inhabitants to coexist in harmonious unison. Now, the earths resources are reduced to a meager existence inside eight foot diameter pipelines. And for what? To supply offshore interests and unsustainable growth patterns in the driest places on the planet.

Sometimes you climb out of bed in the morning and you think, I’m not going to make it, but you laugh inside — remembering all the times you’ve felt that way.

In response to my brief and frustrated post earlier this afternoon (which I’m a bit embarrassed to have actually posted, since it shows the side of myself I’m not the most fond of) about people making GIFs and witticisms about the government shutdown instead of actually, you know, trying to do...
