How do you tell a joke without the punch-line?

People saying that Mr.X is a 'joke' how would you know?

"How do you tell a joke without the question leading to the point of the joke?"

What you're saying is that Mr. X is a non-existent joke. Without the main part of a joke how would you understand the actual meaning of a joke. 

This may not make sense now, but think about it and it will all become clear.
