WEEK 17
It’s a new week and we hope to accomplish as much as we can!!
Monday we couldn’t do much yet because we just collected our wood! We went to get materials and then proceeded to getting our wood and deliver it to school.
We went to get jumping clay to make the eyes as it is super light, and also so we can do the eyes at home.
We got wood from Ong Hai Soon Timber. And he fetched us back to school together with our wood
XinYi also brought HUGEEEE paper over to school but not big enough to fill our artefact

Tues
We went to get all the little things we need (brackets, screws etc.) and finally head back to school to start building our structure!!! After so long and we finally get to start on it.We were so excited to build it. We nailed and drilled some parts together and halfway through we realise it was slanted...and we had to screw out and do it again! It was such a tiring day but yet feeling very accomplished.
Wed
We had lessons in the morning so we could only start in the afternoon. We aimed to finish the whole frame and we did!!! And we did a mini photoshoot with it HHAHAAHA. Feeling a little proud of ourselves.

We started with this
We found many uses for our frame actually HAHAHA
Thurs
Ah...bad day. Went to get more clay and brackets because we ran out of it. Needed to head to the workshop to get our wood cut according to the size of the frame but….it was closed!!!! OHNO. Sigh, we really couldn’t do much without trimming our wood to desire size. So, we combined the paper we need for the interior and did some pendants for our CTA.
We also illustrated on how it will roughly look like at the end with the added caution tapes and warning keep out signs
Fri
Last day of the week but we are quite far from finishing...hais. But we got to consult david a little and he was telling us not to cover up and paint the whole thing so we get to save some time!!! Went down to workshop and got Sam to trim the wood for us and we can finally use it. Xinyi painted the wood while joy went to get acrylic cutter to cut our mirror as Rahim said the workshop machine would be too strong for the acrylic mirror and it might break it. It was quite hard to cut the mirror and it took us sometime..We also got corrugated paper because david say our paper might not be stable enough to hold in place!

We wanted to paint it and there was this strong wind that destroyed everything and our paint topple onto the floor...ah damn it sigh. Hopefully things go better for next week! IT’S THE LAST LAP, JIAYOU US.

week 16
We have so little time left! With CNY taking up our weekends and a monday, and being unable to find a carpenter. It makes it hard for us to continue our work since we need a support for safety reasons.
We consulted Sam on how we should build and he drew this out for us

He said we should look for Chengal wood with a larger surface area to work with as they are more sturdy compared to the wood he has.
We then did an elevation drawing to make it clearer for ourselves
We wanted to start cutting wood on wed. butttt…….. Workshop closes at 2 because of a meeting. Dayummmmm we can’t start at all yet. So we test printed our images on whether we should use 4R size or half the 4R size. Glossy or matte?

gloss

matte
We continued testing how we should do the eyes

Also meanwhile, we re-edited the images accordingly as it looks a bit washed out on the print out. We also search the quotes to include inside the wall because we find that writing out stories was too long and not many people would read it. We find it easier to understand with quotes as quotes are shorter and more people will read it.
Depression quotes for interior
Sleeping is a lot better than waking up. Because when you wake up from a nightmare, you feel relieved. But, I wake up every morning into a nightmare.
The thing about depression is.,a human being can survive almost anything, as long as she sees the end in sight. But depression is so insidious, and it compounds daily, that it's impossible to ever see the end.
I can't eat and I can't sleep. I can’t function well as a human anymore.
The worst kind of crying is when your soul wept and no matter what you did, there was no way to comfort it.
I don't want to see anyone. I lie in the bedroom with the curtains drawn and nothingness washing over me like a sluggish wave.
It’s so hard to talk when you want to kill yourself. That's above and beyond everything else, and it's not a mental complaint-it's a physical thing, like it's physically hard to open your mouth and make the words come out.
Depression is the most unpleasant thing I have ever experienced. . . . It is that absence of being able to envisage that you will ever be cheerful again. The absence of hope. That very deadened feeling, which is so very different from feeling sad. Sad hurts but it's a healthy feeling. It is a necessary thing to feel. Depression is very different.
Because that’s the thing about depression. When I feel it deeply, I don’t want to let it go. It becomes a comfort.
I just want to sleep. A coma would be nice. Or amnesia. Anything, just to get rid of this, these thoughts, whispers in my mind.
It doesn't get better," I said. "The pain. The wounds scab over and you don't always feel like a knife is slashing through you. “
Losing your life is not the worst thing that can happen. The worst thing is to lose your reason for living.
Nothing was slowly clotting my arteries. Nothing slowly numbing my soul. Caught by nothing, saying nothing, nothingness becomes me. When I am nothing they will say surprised in the way that they are forever surprised, "but there was nothing the matter with her.
When your thoughts races from every angle, and you heart panics the moment you are being left alone.
You don't know why you're being the way you are, you'd initially think you are crazy because even you can't comprehend what's going on.
You feel worthless for being the difficult piece of shit other people or depression makes you think you are being.
You feel sick, you feel weak, you feel unwell, you feel tired every single day but when the sun sets that's when you start to become afraid again, it's like a brewing thunderstorm, you don't know when it's going to hit you but you know it's around the corner so you are never relaxed cuz you always stand by for everything to fall apart so you feel more 'prepared' for it.
Everything loses its meaning cuz everything is only temporary. Somedays you try to ignore it and try to breeze through the day as fast as possible because you want to get it done and over with with this life, with this pain, with this burden, with depression.
Suicide becomes uncontrollably tempting because depression makes you think that it is the reality of things, but you need to be strong enough to deny it constantly when it tries to tell you that. It's silent battle with yourself, within yourself, Everyday, every second.
Fighting against the reasons to not live, to give up this fight, to let it all go and let yourself go because to die feels a million times easier compared to living with this dull endless pain.
It made me feel chained up, strapped and make me feel like I don't have the ability to control anything around me anymore, I don't have the ability to stop the hurt from coming, to not be how I am now.
As time goes, you grow tired, and silent because the fight feels pointless, you don't make progress.. You stop fighting and try to live by it, you were in pain, you were depressed, now the pain has become you and the depression becomes you too.
Depression is also like your own 'grey cloud' or a ghost, sitting on your shoulders, hovering over your head, hovering nearby, never really leaving you.
You feel like you're living in a different world from other people. Everybody seem to be floating by you with ease, very fast paced, but for you, your life seem to be progressing at snail pace. Minutes feels like hours and days feel like weeks. Every second so excruciating, it makes your brain throb and exhausted as you fight the will to live. And some days you just feel nothing. Just a robot, for the sake of your attendance in life.
On the outside, what other people see is just you acting up, and sometimes people only realise maybe only a fraction of the pain a depressed person is really going through, when they finally give up the fight and take their own life, then it’s too late.
Depression is a Friend offering a shoulder for you to lean on but just to sabotage you the moment your head touches it. In simple words, depression is ' I promise the real me is not like this, I'm not lazy, it's not that I don't care or am not putting in effort' but you don't have the ability to prove it cuz it's not possible to just be okay again instantly on the spot.
Depression is like an envelope, enveloping your entire being. Depression is way far off from being sad. I can't speak for depressed patients but personally, I rather just be sad, normal sad, than being depressed. Depression is feeling detached from the world and everyone around you.
With these settled, we started production.

We headed down to Ong Hai Soon Timber whereby they recommended us using Meranti wood which was a cheaper and lighter option. They were super helpful.

We then went down to Sim Lim tower to get these few stuff

Hopefully we can be super productive next week !! (finger crossed)

WEEK 15
Ohnooooo! Its week 15. We feel the stress. :(
We consulted Huei hoon for more improvisation.
Huei Hoon’s Consultation
Make the eyes have lights and blink?
It looks like its never ending.
The unevenly spread handwriting feel is nice
Make it like interesting and not so neat
Make it like a tunnel, not a nice space, make the background feel a bit rough.
In this state, there’s a lot of obstacles, hard to break through
Inside shouldn’t be white
What kind of tunnel do you all want
A pillow, suggesting that people with depression’s comfort
Make it like a closeup of a room(but cant tell is a room)
Paste over montage(old bed sheet, some parts are pasted texture some plain)
More different handwritings?
Random protruding stuff, make it not smooth
Use carton
Test the lighting, if come out eyes will it be enough?
Paper mache the eyes
Sam’s Consultation
Because of safety issues, have to find professional carpenters to build it. Because the wood is not strong enough, it might topple and because of the height we need a wooden frame to hold it.
However, wood would not be subsidised for under the school, but to play safe, we contacted 2 carpenters,
David’s consultation
must buy acrylic mirror
change to square
we found an acrylic mirror in the TSO office, so we’re taking it MUAHAHA

Alright! So we changed from this
to this
Finalised images:
Different methods of doing the eyes on the interior:
we found this on http://dogzillalives.deviantart.com/ using Polymer clay, acrylic paint, resin.

Different handwritings:

Testing it we should move the hole to the centre instead:
This week ended pretty early because of Chinese New Year. As much as we want to start working on our artefact, because of Chinese New Year, it’s hard to find a Carpenter that would be available at this timing. Chinese New Year also affected the time we got to complete our artefact. Disappointed, we end this post. Let’s hope we can finish this really soon. Jiayous Joy and XinYi! a week and a half left!

WEEK 14
The week started with Huei Hoon’s consultation
Veil goes with concept
Close eyes like sleeping
People won’t feel scared because they can see what it is (eyes experiment in the toilet)
Make it like lurking in dark then it will be scary
Test if people are conscious of being looked at, not immediate, and open
Can try hanging plastic bag with holes that can see the eyes inside.
Not so outward like the immediate cut outs
Testing shows that people don’t like eyes on them in any form.
Strip lights and mirror ltr got reflection
One piece or something to block the direct light
If spotlight need position properly
Test and see which give the ideal stage
What if take away the eyes
See how people respond
A few sketches of ddiff ways of presenting
Project silhouette of light bulbs
Abt ppl abt society, article enlarged to a3 size
How do they understand when they look in and comeout that it is depression
Need to link it to depression very clearly and not to misinterpret to something else
Three small screens, it reveals a lil more abt depression
Direct them to a very clear message
With these feedback in mind and so little time, we did up a to do list together with suggestions on what should be written on our tear drop pendants, and the audio and visuals inside the artefact.
WHAT TO DO:
exterior:
Test out the form, what people think it is. Sleeping or just calm?
Test out the stocking (xy tmr bring)
Test out the hot glue droplet
Words to put in hot glue tbc
If people will put their heads into a hole
Create big box for people to stick head in
Interior:
Audio (convincing and more sad voice) [tbc]
Images
Eyes ( styrofoam, clay, chalk, print the eyes, red thread, glue gun, resin/ nail polish) [thurs]
Words in interior (home)
Lights (fairy lights? LED strips?)
Image transfer eyes
Words on glue gun
I’m fine
Fine
I’m hiding
Save me
What you see, might not be what it is
I look fine, but i’m not
Nobody understands
More than just emotions
Underlying secrets you won’t understand
Fine is an understatement
I just need a friend
I’m tired
I’m not crazy
if only you felt how i feel
I’m really trying
SOUND
Why are you looking at me like that?
Dont ask me anything
Im not telling u anything
Ahhh im fine dont worry
Just leave me alone
GET OUT OF HERE
*cries* why am i such a burden
Im so unworthy for anyone
The world would be much better without me
Nobody understands me
Sometimes i wonder when i’ll ever be normal again
You’ll never understand what i’m going through
Words on the walls:
“It’s something you’ll always tell yourself it’s temporary and it’ll go away eventually, and it’s just another bad day. But it’s not.”
“when others think that you’re so happy because you get up dress up and look good, they think you’re "happy" but inside you feel worthless.”
“You struggle to look fine every single day, but it always gets worse.”
“Everything that brought you little joy are now useless and even the simplest tasks becomes painful.”
“Everyday passes so slowly, days feels like years, your mind and body gets so heavy and you’ll feel like you’ll never be happy again.”
“Depression is a never ending void full of emotions and total confusion I'm a ticking time bomb who explodes with these emotions when something triggers my depression.”
“I'm lost in my own mind and I'm lost within this world.”
“It's more than just be sad, the word 'sad' is an understatement.”
“What may seem like the most effortless task, as easy as picking up an object that has fallen on the floor, becomes so so so difficult and dreadful.”
“I’m too tired to even try explain that i’m not being lazy, i’m not being difficult on purpose”
“It's a dull grinding ache in your heart that sleeps with you and greets you in the morning.”
“Your thoughts races from every angle, and you heart panics the moment you are being left alone.”
“When you are at your lowest and most vulnerable, depression really has the ability to engulf that person when th and overwhelm you completely.”
“it's like a brewing thunderstorm, on the verge of breaking the whole world apart”
“You feel afraid when you are being too happy or happier than usual, because you know, you might just break down again, anytime soon.”
“Suicide becomes uncontrollably tempting because depression makes you think that it is the reality of things”
People’s reaction to artefact:
Hole too small
Creepy
People look from a distance before they even put their heads in
Some even scared to put their heads in even before they even looked in
They rmb the eyes from our previous experiment and they are scared to put their heads in
They judging the exterior look
A group came together, and they thought it was a never ending tunnel, and they all took turns one by one to look into the “tunnel”
However none of them read the words on the wall as they are too thin
They looked again when they go back and ask their friends too
Tend to look when with their friends
On thursday, we tried to experiment a little on the interior and exterior
we tested using hot glue gun and resin and realised hot glue dries faster. SO we’ll be going with hot glue.
we tried to see which form would be most suitable for the exterior
we did a flowchart to follow if we should change anything
we re-did a prototype for the interior but the exterior has yet to be confirmed.
We also tried editing some images for the interior
We also tried testing sounds.
On Friday we had David’s Consultation:
Opening can be shape of an eye
Square or hexagon? Square looks fine too.
Eyes can be peaceful, sleeping, half open.
Many eyes closed? (exterior)
You need a lure for people to come.
How does the veil mean?
Too dark inside
Hang a bulb? Inside someone’s mind, flickering?
Eyes interesting but can't stay
Darken the ink of the words
Words too big because very near to the hole, hard to read
Why not bring to other places and try?
Have a little bit of colour but not too much (pictures)
Blood looks quite legit
Contrast one better than the faded one
Black background better to blend in with our tunnel
Unless like polaroid kind
Becareful dont show that she’s haunted or possessed, she’s suffering from depression
Hide at corner and cry kind of pic
She look lost but depression should be think too much kind.
sound:
Toilet is the best, paper hole sounds like studio.
Sd stairs sounds very hollow
Under table sounds tighter.
Pendant- more than just emotions for vague and abstract
It should be something clearer, that people will understand.

WEEK 13
It’s a new week again, pretty worried because we are still kinda stuck with no ideas and our progress is stagnant. Started off with explaining the candle idea to huei hoon on monday!
Huei’s Consultation
Can go a little deeper on what’s depression.
You all need a little more content in it.
(Root cause) You all explained what it is not but didn’t explain what it is.
Give reasons on why depression is different from sadness, how do you tell them apart.
Explanation largely ok. (for presentation)
Idea not very strong and not very original
The connections inside need to be stronger
Needs to be very real
Not unusual enough
Not strong enough to make a strong communication project
Why candle? what does it represent?
Small flame= little energy
Flame= hope, cannot see the future is bright
People will assume if we don't explain our intention properly
Why hexagon?
Every shape, form u choose has a meaning
Use compressed foam board? Don’t use wood.
Sculpt the foam board then paint then wax on the surface
A little straightforward
How to make the person look in and see themselves in depression mode on the mirror?
Ended our morning consultation and we thought a little about the form so,
Reason why we used a hexagon is because because: people with depression tries their best to meet the requirements of those without. So with all these negative words, it shapes the depressed causing them to be affected, being unable to reach these goals, hence close to breaking down.
In the afternoon, we had another consultation with Huei,
Hot glue more durable than wax
Hollow
Calculate how many boxes you all need
Whole thing doesnt need to be wax
So it can be lighter.
Pendant put on the wax.
AAAAHHHH more to go!!!! Jiayou us. Luke didn’t have any lessons on Tuesday so it was pure consultation!
Luke’s consultation
Do something that people think is normal, but when depression people look at it, it doesnt feel normal to them. Thus make them go forward.
Differentiate normal people and mental illness
Can play with optical illusion
Take a big panel and make it look 3d, outline it with luminous light
So when they look in will be second third plane.
Something to show there’s a “hole” inside
During Alfred’s lesson, we learnt to use Adobe Animate although Joy has learnt it before, she’s still slightly struggling with it’s coding and Xin Yi is also trying hard learning it.
We consulted Alfred after and these are what he said:
Make a smaller hole, if not everyone can see everything inside from far.
How are you gonna show a static fake flame?
Try to light a candle and see the flame and melted wax
Observe how the wax forms and how much wax there is.
If you want to make a candle shape, make it look legit
Now it looks like scooby doo ghost.
How to make the wax?
Symbol of candle?
Sign of ending life?
It is not a sign of strength
Need a stronger symbolism
Do a form that is so normal that we will not take a second look
Candle- lifespan
Bubble wrap- security
Where’s the empathy?
Where’s the call to action?
Didn’t really follow your objective
Where’s the part that’s gonna be fatal if left untreated?
How do you show depression if left untreated it becomes fatal?
Something thats ordinary, plain,
Requires a kind of like timer- at the end of this if somethings is not done then POOF
HOW IS THAT EMPATHY when u just look inside?
Not addressing empathy and show consequence.
Address objective or change it.
Fatal or empathy?
Felt really lost after consultation with Alfred...because we are drifting far away from our objective omg.
So we have to keep reminding ourselves of our objective!!!!!
To help people empathise and overcome depression; if left untreated it becomes fatal.
we thought of a few ideas on how we could reach the objective
1. Using back the idea of a never ending tunnel, we replace the words or quotes with daily diary entries of real people with depression till the last suicidal diary entry.
2. Combining the images with words together. Taking inspiration from Olivia Penpraze’s video documentation on her journey with depression till suicide.

3. Taking inspiration from here https://www.blurtitout.org/2012/07/02/diary-of-depression/ Images attatched to each diary entry shows his exterior normality going through depression. But his diary entries write things like:
4. Exterior: A diary that shows a fine person
5. “diary” on a stand. Users read the diary till the end to see a hole in the diary. Users then peek in to see the never ending book
6. Is it possible to use projectors instead of a never ending tunnel
So previously we screwed up our interim, and we met Huei on Wednesday for some feedback for it.
Experimentation started late, so not much development
3 areas we need improve: deck and presentation, development
Have to allow the exterior lecturer to understand better. Using the deck and the way we present. Need facts and figures to allow the listener to understand and see how we used our insights to get our objective and how we ideates.
It’s all about communication. It’s a deliverable part of a campaign.be effective to the client
Not enough testing to show that it’s an experimental project: techniques and concept
Dont throw in the whole paragraph into the slides, use keywords
Explain why we used people without depression
3 CONCEPTS: throw in sketches because they under process
Experimental not enough cos only got 1?
Experimentation hard to make out what we tryna achieve
Experimentation: how much light we need? Bright or dim? Placement of lights?
Incorporate points of research with survey
Planning is impt when planning slides.
What can i do if i think my neighbour have depression?
Photography is techniques?
How you know people will walk up to it?
Concept not super persuasive yet, and it’s a very normal idea
Try to incorporate interesting use of media: can it be something different? But it’s smth different?
Can it enable modern technology? Smth more interesting?
Interactive part depends on what the client wants to achieve, which is the user’s take away.
Can check out exhibition at STPI
Landing site connected to QR code of people telling their stories or those relatives telling their stories (realistic)
On that same day, we felt very behind time and we consulted David on our very little progress:
Diary idea,
Going inside - who will read
Too wordy
Visually passive
No shocking element, feels very far
They won’t feel scared
Need element that makes it scary
self -pity moment
They dont want self-pity from a stranger, but they rather tell you things, because they are close to you
They are fearful that you will look into their inside
They are not as opened to strangers: there is a layer of “don’t come and touch me”
Notes hidden by a weariness to share.
Selective sharing
Users should feel like they have intruded somebody’s privacy
Feels like they doing something wrong but they feel wow
Eg: go inside, full of eyes, what do you feel? Watchful of disclosing secrets. Sublime
Weary eyes, with small notes beside it (consider the ring-jap)
Sublime then makes them want to look on.
Hidden notes, secrets (scarce)
Curiosity kills the cat cfm will look in
“I dont rly disclose my depression to other”
If it’s plain? Expressionless? Eyes outside but closed?
Two eyelids - peaceful
Makes them want to question themselves
Sound - crying/talk
Interaction is visual
Secrets hidden very well. Explore with people sticking their head in.
Outside looks peaceful and normal, but the shocking thing is that we all didn’t know that they have depression.
So the depression images will be the background.
One line of the notes can do
Some disclose some “dw to let u know”
So how is this depression?
Maybe it could be a note “they won’t really tell you, till you are willing to be understanding”
But people may look at your notes first before they put their head in
How obvious shld the notes be?
Could be white post its around so they look like scales
Don’t do eyes for exterior so there can be the element of surprise
If it’s a pendant, how will they know that they can take it?
Put inside hole?
Or smth like a cocoon
Eyebags? Put the giveaway inside?
Connection between the whole thing is most important
WE HAVE HOPE AGAIN!!!!!! So excited to carry on after hearing what David said!!! And we came up with a list of stuff we can do for now.
Areas for experimentations:
test a wall of eyes, how will people react
Those with depression and how they will react differently with friends and strangers
Best way to create the most realistic and weary eyes
Best way to create a pendant: hot glue? Resin? Plastic? Shape?
More on photography, show more experiments of techniques
Test sounds on people
MIRRRRORRRR
If people will stick their heads in
Shape?
Butterfly? To represent freedom, taking a butterfly token home represents taking a baggage off?
Teardrop? To represent the tears they have shed will not be taken as a call for attention? Can put in eyebags also
Drug? Pills? Addition to the want to kill themselves?
Heart?
Bones?
Gun bullets?
Lego brick? Or puzzle? Part and parcel of their depression journey?
What if it’s a drug capsule? If the user throws it into the water the capsule dissolves, a note comes out or a message comes out?
EXTERIOR
Sheer cloth over the 2 eyes
Still hexagon?
Cylinder?
Plain w two eyes and eyebags
If teardrop, hang on eyelash?
BIGGG EYE WITH EYELASH
Peace sign twistttt
The exterior with the net

SOUND
Nobody understands me
Why are you looking at me like that?
Dont ask me anything
Im not telling u anything
Ahhh im fine dont worry
Just leave me alone
GET OUT OF HERE
*cries* why am i such a burden
Im so unworthy for anyone
The world would be much better without me
Some of what they are really thinking and some of them saying stuff they pushes people away
Went to check out STPI on Thursday!
Didn’t really get much inspiration, but it’s okay!
TGIF!! it’s another day of consultation
DAVID’S CONSULTATION
What do you want to achieve of your experiment?
Social experiment of eyes- the location determine the results
Can see from afar or out of a sudden?
Put in toilet?
Alternatives,
Individual or a group of people
Designers-right brain
Engineers-left brain
Test people of different schools
Exterior, need something to pull it etc to create the form we want
Mosquito net- drapes down but we need something to pin down
It won't flow by itself
What does the teardrop and her means?
Looks very sweet
Have u experiment if 1m is a good size?
Closed eyes- fine but like having anxiety, sweating
Remove her sweat, CTA (pendant)
Flowchart like how we will react or how others will react, if they walk away, will they get the message?
If flow chart has a lot of “walk away” then you have to change the thing that connects to the “walk away”.
What if you make the eyes outside open and close slowly
Need to have a spotlight since our artefact is being draped
Echo and reverberations are diff
Reverberations are like sounds you make in the toilet. The sounds bounce against the walls
Read up or listen to reverberations, sounds similar to echo, but it’s the bouncing actions that makes you feel like there’s echo
Heartbreak hotel song by elvis Presley. The echo feels very near, the sounds bounces a lot.
Experiment 1: We printed many eyes and stick them behind toilet doors to see people’s reaction mainly people from SD
we’ve got quite good response! Most of them felt uncomfortable or scared (yes! Our objectives). Only 3 out of 15 thought it was pretty funny because it was in SD, it’s not a rare sight to see weird things.. hmm maybe it’s time to change some locations.
So things we need to do this coming week:
Sound
weekly reflections
consultation sheets
form with stockings
resin pendant
Best way to create the most realistic and weary 3D eyes
test audio with underpass
more testings on the eyes (guys)
hot glue pendant
test if people will stick their heads in a hole
Glad we didn’t give up and were able to think of ideas together as a team. There’s not much time left, let’s hope we can finish experimenting by this week and start building it by the following week!

WEEK 12
HEYYY IT’S THE NEW TERM, and also our last term before we graduate! Omg time is really flying by so quickly i dont know how to deal anymore. But anyway, we did some photography stuff for our artefact over the holidays!

It took us a few day to really get back on track because we are all in holiday mood TT.
So our first lesson was Alfred’s and we learnt arduino and wooo we could light up something just with codes and some wires. Pretty amazed but it looks complicated too. Bless us.
We also got to know our grades for interim presentation and its pretty depressing knowing it ws 40% and our grades were bad:( meh… BUT MORE DETERMINED TO WORK HARDER!!!!
Finally had INDS on friday and David gave us a big sheet of paper and told us to write down -what to keep, what to develop, what to stop and what to improve- and we had a sharing session with everyone in class! We got comments from each other on how to improve and i think it was pretty useful :)

He also went through with us- what is a soul and body in our work. Soul being the concept and body being form. We were asked whether our work has both or one and ours was kinda of half body half soul ohgod… much to improve on i guess.
David’s consultation.
Put the hole in the middle
Not near to the top because people can easily tell its the mirror.
Experiment more with the mirror
Circle hole should be hexagon also
Need to have moodboard of interior
Doing the acrylic thing will kill you guys
Build on interaction
Build on form
For now it looks like toilet tiles.
Form got problem
Work alot on exterior
Get a form that attracts, makes you go wowz
Maybe something that leads your eyes to it, like lines
Story looks a little bare
What if outside have a net
Need a layer of story
What if outside is also a mirror
Look at some other forms
What to wrap around
No need to be special material
Can be something we can find at home
Bubble wrap shows fragile
Weak
Bubble wrap-happy thing but also means weak
Clock- what does it mean
Depression-look normal but not normal
Force front but quite fragile
Very sensitive
Bubble wrap makes sense
Bubble wraps is the closest so far
You wanna create a contrast, but with bubble wrap and the story inside does it match? Will users understand it well?
It is okay to just paint a colour
Or an optical illusion
To show “ hey, it’s just a front”
The sudden change it’s hard to link
Can use typography like words like “i’m fine”
Symbolism of tiredness? Beaten? No battery? Not charged?
Building outside trying to hold itself tgt inside is rotted
What if it’s slanted in an angle? Like it’s melting? Like a melting candle
Find alternative for wax eg fabric
Candle, then people can peel it out. Peeling out these show notes : takeaway
Speak to the TA, the slip will tell people in case they have it. So it won’t be so staged
Try to improve from the melting candle, put a fire to show that he trying to hold himself
Interior audio: You looking into the person’s mind, so the person should tell you the truth? The person should be temperamental
David always open up our mind to more forms and ideas~~~ now to find a proper form to work on :/ JIAYOU XINYI AND JOY.

WEEK 7
A new week, a new day! Let’s hope we can finish thisNew ideas:
1. A wall blocks the user from seeing “the other user” behind the wall. This represents isolation and the act of wearing a mask. When users walk past, he would be able hear “the other user” talking and would reply saying hello?. “the other user” behind the wall would pause for a while and say “oh i didn’t know anyone would hear me”. Their conversation goes on till “oh don’t worry about me, you won’t have to till i’m gone”. (conversation is fully recorded and implied into the artefact, no manpower needed when on display) Just the sentence itself gives the user the creeps and would want the user to do something about it. But since users know this conversation won’t continue, users can pin notes of encouragement on the walls to show that everyone can help to impact his life. Users can then hashtag their conversation or story to share the unknown but scary story of depression. Experimentation:
Kinds of replies users will give
Voices that sound harmless but approachable
Other than wall, what else can be a form of separation?
What will attract them to go over from afar

2. Masks hanging from a ceiling, it’s pure white. In every eye of the mask would be different words describing what it is like falling into depression. The deeper the person walks in, the deeper they go into depression. (eg, outer layer: fault, middle layer: terror, last layer: death). Users can hashtag to share their story with a mask blocking their face or partially “taken off”

Taking inspiration from this
3. People with depression easily put on a mask every single day in fear of being misunderstood. However those that are sad usually make it known. Front looks like drug capsule casing to show that addictions trap these people, within the capsule casing is a row of happy masks and the second row a row of sad faces, when users walk to the back of the capsule case, the masks are cabinet-like which can be opened up to show their thoughts. So example the sad one would say “i dropped my chicken on the floor today” whereas the depressed would say something like “don’t worry you won't have to once i'm gone”. Users can then hashtag to show that depression is not all just emotions.
Possible areas for experimentation:
Material of capsule for it to be sturdy
Cabinet material
Mask material

Can make it into a well
- well bc isolation, dropped into the dark world and its hard to get out
- then when people look in the audio will start talking.
- what if we have a lot of masks inside.
- CTA also is write on the brick of the well
Huei’s consultation
idea1
- Wall brick
- How do you know people will respond bc it is an exhibit?
- How are you going to encourage people to actually voice out and speak? They hear sound but they wont say anything because they know is fake
- They only write notes if its a real situation or impactful enough
- Those that that will move people enough to be able to reach out and share their story
- We are communication project not art project
- What makes this different from a art project?
- How do you know its a communication project? How can you tell that its about depression?
- Whole wall full of question, then people touch which question then it answer
- Its like a convo and when u discover more u go deeper and deeper
- Typo wall
Idea 2
- Hanging mask
- How do they know its depression?
- Only words? Whats on the mask?
- Interesting idea, if people see bunch of mask they will go
- Only words? Maybe add more
- Any idea how to make them feel more isolated when they go in
- How to do up the environment to add to the feel
- Whats the call to action?
- Think about the expression.
- Should it be all same? Or some smiling some normal.
Idea3
- Part 1 and part 2 thing
- Part 1 is not clear.
- What can the viewer learn other than emotions
- Link them to website?
- Dont think is very strong and experimental
- Think about communication online
- Hashtag where?
E.g. instagram, anything that can be happening and experimental on instagram?
- They dont get to see if they just post and dont click on it
- Maybe when they post they can see a video thats experimental
Idea 4
- What if by doing smth they can save the person up
- As you pull it activates words of encouragement
- Audio of how you can help the person
- NEW MEDIA LAST YEAR
- Something pitch dark and someone keep crying and crying
David’s Consultation on that same day
- YOU GONNA BUILD A WELL !?!?!!?
- TUNNEL
- MIRROR
- CUT HOLE IN THE MIDDLE
- GIVE PEOPLE THE HOLLOW TUNNEL FEEL
- How real how interesting will the well be?
- Art friend mask very common
- Happy mask?
- Tunnel is already hiding
- Exterior “laughing”
- Inside is what they think is reality
- Outside is the reality
- Outside shld be im fine
- Inside is im not and im sucked in.
- Pillar is strong outside
- Inside cracking
- Inside stick alot of pictures of emotions, and then you repeat (diff emotions of depression)
- In all kinds of setting and lightings
- Tunnel of emotions
- What makes the outside seem strong? pilar?
- Shows strength and stability
- Huge and slender? Flower on the outside? Inside creepy
- Create contrast
- Door parts? Doll parts?
- Symbolism
- zen garden kinda feel using wall plaster on the wall? Hypnotic looks?
- Think of form
- 2 sticks with a wrapped canopy around? What does it mean?
- Carpeted grass?
- Acrylic mirrors: lighter and they are actually mirrors
- Mirror put top and bottom so it can reflect
- There must be light so it can reflect
- How to tell people that is depression? What if its the same person?
- There must be a sign, sign and sound that shows depression
- It could be like he is reading a poem: emotionless
- Audio could be outside and inside
- SOUND IS VERY IMPORTANT
- Circular is harder to make, polygon or straight lines will make it easier?
- What kind of lights to use?
- CTA: if you need help, hashtag/ youtube video with the person from the, augmented reality? Snapchat kinda film? Don’t go too high tech
- Inception app- CHECK IT OUT
- Can put a mic in the tunnel
- Can use garageband to recreate the app using a mic
- Add echo and reduce the pitch of the person
Idea 2
- Why masks?
- If i walk in and walk back it will be back of the mask
- Not rly walking deep
- More like in the midst of the crowd
After David’s consultation, we illustrated out what we wanted to go with.
Luke’s consultation the next day
A house totally no light
Experiment-put experiment and see if people will put their head in
If floating then people will go down and see
Curtain
What will make a person tat want to explore further and put their head in.
Make people think that underneath can see
Colour cubes outside?
THINGS TO EXPERIMENT:
Whether people will put their head in
Exterior of the artefact
Interior of artefact
Audio
Photography style
Lighting
Alfred’s consultation that same day
- How you know people will stick their head in
- Record all the lines and distort it and let it play and overlooping
- How does it solve the problem? - Keep it simple
- Depression do u look up or down
- Last year senior did a hole thing but fail
- Flashy lights is a draw
- Make it small so when we look in is big
- Looking down , looking into depression mind
- Rationale abit
- Translucent acrylic sheet on outside
- “Inside” led lights
- Attraction problem, how to make people put their heads in
- How do you know they will have to put their head down?
- Wonderland of cubes being stacked up, randomly placed. Boxes changing colours
- One of the boxes allows you to take a peek in to see the “tunnel”
- Create sounds like whispers that won’t be able to hear unless goes near the box
- Ear buds put on full blast, play whispers, will give the creeps
After the consultation, we went over to Xinyi’s house to get things done. We tried to place experimenting with the interior and the placement and creation of the lighted boxes.

David’s consultation that Friday
- The distance from the mirrors may be a little to near to each other hence unable to achieve the “tunnel” effect.
- Images may be a bit contrasting, images like polaroid then write over the pictures
- Colours outside must blend with the inside.
- If you have a glowing effect, what does the emotion show? Create contrast
- Created a yin and yang effect. Use clean colours
- You can’t reveal too early. Inform the users that it’s from care corner singapore.
- CTA, what makes them curious to find out about the hashtag?
- White wall for the person to write on. So they know how to comfort others. Take this as a practice. Glow is like a state of consciousness.
- Can use flickering candles on the inside.
- Must have an interesting form. But a little overkill.
- Need smth shocking on the outside
- Outside could be an abstract form of the face? Eyes? Look into the person’s eye
- Stocking material, stretch and wrap around, styrofoam balls (rotting flesh)
- Can put things that relate to the person. Panty hose, organic shapes.
- Box with mirrors inside but nails outside (person suppressed)
- Can heal the person with words
- Toothpicks and lights, test for effects
- SETTLE FORM FIRST
- How to get people to write first? Convince them with the sound.
Things to do:
Form
Will notes make the artefact beautiful
With these in mind, we rethought through our artefact. and came up with this
And did up our prototype
We also tested on our photography
let’s hope we’ll finish in time

WEEK 6
IT’S A NEW WEEK! LET’S START IT GREAT! HAHAHH.
We started the week with the CA2 brief *bam* thrown in our face :( hahahah. Huei hoon briefly explained what we have to do for our interim, what do we have to include etc.
Andddddd we moved on to *PRESENTATION CLINIC*.
She showed us videos on how people present (the good and the bad) and we were asked to give some comments! Next, she gave us pointers for our interim presentation.
Here are some of the notes from the lectures:
A confident introduction
Deliver your hook - what’s the objective of your project?
Agenda of your presentation - show audience what they can take away from your presentation.
The height of your presentation - your creative solutions.
Differentiate yourself - do something unique (that’s relevant to your topic).
Observe what you say - no singlish, uhm, ahh, keep repeating same words etc.
Rehearse rehearse and rehearse until it is fluent.
What not to do with the hands? - Hands on hips= defensive, hands in pocket=casual and arrogant, folding hands=closed off
Eye contact with audience.
Avoid text heavy slides.
And guess what... WE WERE ASKED TO PRESENT SUDDENLY. We had around 45 minutes to prepare our slides and BAM it was time to present. Omggg i can never do up a good presentation without preparing beforehand but i thought maybe i got better after presenting quite a few times this year but no...i was wrong.
The moment the presentation started i screwed up. I didn’t know what i was saying and it felt so boring (yes i can feel my monotone-ness) i really felt like stopping halfway. But joy did well *yay claps* her voice so much louder than me and more engaging to listen to (Hafizah said her voice was very commanding hence she needed to listen. Joy: “maybe i should go army..hmmm…) Hais time to catch up xinyi :(
We gave comments to each other and helped each other improve! *finger cross* i (xinyi) will(MUST!!!) do better for the real thing.
Then, it was consultation! We improvised our ideas during the weekend and also illustrated out.
Here are our current ideas:
Idea 1:
Different images about depression which makes it seem like a crime scene all of these crime scenes are humans with their heads missing ,to show that some people lose their minds over thinking because of depression, some clear some faded, with what someone feels depression is behind the images and at the back of each image writes the crime that happened and conclusion that forms up a big picture ,which is the face of a monster, nailed onto the tree branches. We want to make it like it’s in the forest because in the forest people feel lost, just like how people feel lost when having depression. The words “you won’t figure it out MUAHAHHA” will be played once in awhile and help cries will be constant. Users checking out the exhibit gets to be ‘detectives’ whereby they peel off the pieces of images to throw on the floor to show “fighting against the monster”.
Idea 2:
A TV showing someone banging on the screen calling for help, with a tree growing around and through it. The branches pokes through the items around it’s surrounding (eg a teddy bear). This shows that deep within the “don’t bother me, i’m fine” replies shows a person calling for help. Users will be asked to poke notes of encouragement on the branches. This shows that sometimes no matter how much you try, it may not help much unless the person with depression wants to help himself.
Idea 3
masks of happy faces, mounted on a wall. Users peep inside the eyes of the mask to see a film . The film shows the POV of the person looking through the mask. This shows that the person is hiding something behind his eyes. Users will need to put his hand onto a “scanner” with a hand on it. At the end of the short film, the words “glad you could help” comes out.
Huei’s comments after consulting.
Idea 1:
Impactful
Tone and mood must add to the “lost in the forest” feel
Bring out sense of this condition
Person being lost and calling out for help
Inner monster= mental state=scarier=don't know why you feeling this way
In a forest where there is no path=no direction
Don’t know how to get out of the low sunken feeling
Make it hard to find his way
Can use mirror, make him feel more lost, double the space
Many layers to understand depression, when you go deeper you can understand the inner most thoughts, entice to walk inner
Encourage people to go deep in to read in
What if you fold it in a certain way? What if they flip then it’s a different image? Messages on tree trunks after the happy image has appeared?
When you fold there’s a commitment to make? Going through depression? Stepped out of depression by transforming?
Outer layer dark, inner layer bright
BE COST EFFECTIVE
Make the trees graphic, could use recycled materials
What if you were to do this for your clients? Think in terms of communication (eg road shows and interacting effectively)
Minimal light, makes you feel like you are isolated
Idea 2:
Video must have enough content because user may not know what the person with depression is going through
Video must have enough content because user may not know what the person with depression is going through
Not as effective as first idea
Really rely on audience
Unless you can tell a story that really touches people
It it feels real people may question if it’s really real or not
Can hear people walking but they cannot really help me
Idea 3:
Share your story or share friend’s story
Ask their friends to go on this site?
Means a website can be a deliverable too
Emotionally captivating
What is the CTA
Has to be authentic
“Do you know someone going through depression?” pledge to drop a text of concern today”
Could touch one deeply if executed well
Well..joy and xinyi still can’t really come up with a very strong concept and all the concepts are very ~shakkyyyy~ sigh. Hopefully ideas spark onto us soon :(
Alfred’s consultation:
It’s too abstract
Anamorphic ah? If look at another angle how?
Where’s the depression?
Need to know what’s the symptoms of depression
Bring up the symptoms straight up
Cause of concerns?
See the symptoms then - got attention (i know someone’s that’s like that, im behaving like that)
Before we go into artsy world, what’s the tension build up, show fatal? What are the different stages
How do u involve me that if i do not do anything for too long i get bad?
If you show someone that is very sad, how do u differentiate that is an emotion or mental illness.
More than just emotions, it’s a mental illness. If leave unattended is fatal. This is depression.
Crime scene and depression??? No link.
Must be able to see the flip sides of things.
If a photograph of people having depression and being sad , how to make them differentiate?
Is the same?
What’s the urgency?
Consequence if they just brush depression off is not there.
So stress are we too, we go drawing board back (insert Yoda accent here)
The fact that our interim is soon and we barely have an idea to experiment on, we start feeling stressed while our brains are filled with blankness.
Thursday was a no school day and joy and xinyi cracked their brains to get more ideas and improvised. WE FINALLY HAD NEW IDEA but we were so scared it got rejected again.
IDEAAAAA
1. A screen showing “pick those two papers and dip in the water”. One paper has the word “sad” on it. (water soluble paper), another has “depression” on it. (plastic?? Normal paper also can). When they dip in, “sad” will disappear because sadness can disappear after awhile, however depression is not that easy to get rid of. Depression is more than just emotions. If can depression dip in and change to another word. CTA??????
2. The words “everyone need some happiness” is pasted on the wall” with a container of “happiness water” at the bottom of it. One paper has the word “sad” on it. (water soluble paper), another has “depression” on it. (plastic?? Normal paper also can). When they dip in, “sad” will disappear because sadness can disappear after awhile, however depression is not that easy to get rid of. Depression is more than just emotions. If can depression dip in and change to another word (maybe “Don’t worry about me, you won’t need to once i’m gone”). People will then notice how severe depression can get and share their story to raise awareness about it.
“Templates” of depression urging people to join in the exhibit to experience what it will be like during depression. Once sitting in the “templates”, mainly to add to their instagrams, sound will be played saying “i’m all to blame, it’s all my fault” etc. People would find this negativity really annoying hence concluding that depression is like a leech, it never stops sucking your blood, is definitely more annoying than just being sad. Users would hashtag their image to #____________ to share their feelings and their story regarding depression.
David’s consultation
Do i want to dip it?
Whole moment i get it, like when they dip they be like “ohhh”
A line of paper and dipping it by itself?
For closeup to understand
How does it look like from afar?
Why would people stick their hands into water?
With the slip alone, would it change their attitude?
How to help them?
It’s only part of the big story
You need a lure with a form
You want to talk about long term damage
No story to dipping the water.
What leads to that symbolically?
Cookie cutter template idea
Having a template doesn't show anything.
They dont know what it is from afar.
When they sit in they MUST know what is wrong.
Have a nice form to look at
From a far gonna look disturbing.
Something that sticks for a long time and u dwell in it and cant get out.
What other symbolism represent lost?
Something strucks david…
Mousetraps
How u display it
It triggers one emotion without sound alr
Mousetrap with a piece of wood? Showing someone/something’s trap.
Some potential with this trap
What traps them?
Someone trap in mousetrap “im fine”
Slap on to words “im fine” (slime)
Mousetrap on hanger
Weirder it is better
Face x mousetrap
Trap means its long term
Mouse trap on a clock
Depression trap the whole day
Clock hand moving etc
Over the weekends:
Many mind maps were made to better understand our topic and why we said that people with depression wear masks

And we thought of many new ideas which not all can work

AND WE WENT TO NATIONAL GALLERY!!
this was the only interactive work that we remembered to take a pic of. the other super interactive work wasn’t actually a work. but we had lots of fun with it.
We thought of a few new concepts. *Fingers crossed* hope we can start with experimenting soon because we have not much time left.

WEEK 5
In a blink of an eye..it’s week 5!!! Time fly by so fast and we don’t have much time left.. Anyway, xinyi is finally back after her dance concert ended!!! So monday, Huei lead us through things to put in our interim and also showed us examples of the senior’s work. She kept reminding us that we should include ALL our failed experiments in. Because some of us might feel *paiseh* that it’s ugly or failed badly and decides not to include heh...but what’s success without failing right!
Some notes from huei’s lecture..
Consider using material characteristics
paper, wood, acrylic, metals, liquids, light
media formats
2D prints
Bound prints
Moving images (stop motion, animation, film) [simultaneous projection?][one projector behind and one in front?]
Projections
3D artefacts
Typo with print and light? (consider?)
Processes in Documentation
Documentation process, step by step, testing and experimentations
Is it successful? (factors)
Is it not? (method etc wrong? Materials? technique?)
Next, we consulted our ideas again. Improvised a little from david’s comments.
Idea 1
many images representing depression hanging from the ceiling to create the words “i’m fine”. users can walk through to see all the images. users can hanshtag to imnotfine to share their stories
Idea 2
Using Projection mapping, projections of people’s faces on the white bedroom furniture. They all say that they are “fine” but they all have obvious physical and emotional pain shown.
Idea 3
Masks of happy faces, mounted on a wall. Users peep inside the eyes of the mask to see an image, 3D or 2D or film or moving images. This shows that the person is hiding something behind his eyes.
These are Huei’s comments.
Idea 1
Why fetal position?
Where’s the experimentation?
Is it flat? Or have different layers.
First look see the i’m fine or second look then see
Experiment by layering and multiple image?
Do you remember the
SAM exhibition- pvc pipes w words on it and screen showing the full image from certain camera views
When you do experiment, u got control over things
Ideas- can have first layer second layer and third layer
Through diff transparency areas
Small image making a big image-- why this way of presenting
What’s the small info we have and overall what you want them to see
*suddenly joy thoughts of new idea.. Making it into crime scene*
Killing of interest, etc
What’s causing the person to be feeling down
How the crime created must be told from the picture
Unsmiley kind of face
Instances of normal daily happening, happy stuff etc but there’s one person there with the same face throughout
There’s people who wear mask smiling but deep inside there’s a lot they don’t share
Ask ppl to recognize the details
How to hang
Hard to constraint to one alignment
Where to view from
If look at different angle can’t see?
Peep hole
See different stuff
Idea 2
No energy to do anything where would they retire to?
Have to show what they do and where they put their stuff (eat already put on bed)
Serious design experimentation
Where’s the difficulty, intricacy
How to get all the little pieces of video on
Need some aspect in the design of it that u are experimenting
Not just installation
Idea 3
When someone looks in the video he feels that he or she is going through all this
Muffled sounds, flashback (not clear)
Not a regular video
When someone looks into it is like (gosh someone is going thru all this)
Audio some words clear some words with audio
Portray emotions and condition of someone’s depressive culture
Superimpose of each other the video
Need earphone
Overall, we didn’t have a very good concept... we were so stress but couldn’t think of anything.. :(
Next up, tuesday!! Xinyi was down with flu and fever. So Joy was alone again..
So on tuesday was premiere pro lessons and then Alfred’s lessons with an introduction to Arduino. (le sigh.. NewD again, but it’s okay, we recap)
So these are the notes
Site Visit to SAM
HOHOHO SINGAPORE BIENNALE 2016 IS HERE! We came to get inspiration. Here are our favourite works!
This is the artist herself and we were really amazed
It's friday again which is the time of the week where David gives deep lecture to us.
The class was so funny because he was asking us a question and everyone gave different answers about being real. It came be from, real to authentic to original to WOOWWW HHAHAHAHA. I can’t really remember but there’s always this time of the lesson where everything was mindblown.
Some notes from David’s lecture!
Under what criteria is the experiment legit? Can i test myself?
*recap*
Reality is a collective understanding
How can you make people believe your work is real?
You can create symbolisms
There are some signs to show something
Real- real object
But not authentic, different level of REAL
Something can be same but not original
Something need to trigger to drown user into the 3D space
Creating something that is ‘not real’ (disneyland)
Refer to week 4 because important
Your work can bring them to 2 paths (half full, half empty)
Both ways are still correct
Gravity is a theory not a fact, no one has measured gravity
2 sides to present, everything is balanced
Don’t trust your senses -Plato
Create a fake reality
Phenomena: An appearance or immediate object of awareness in experience. A thing that is appears to and is constructed by the mind
Nomena: The noumenal realm was equated with the world of ideas known to the philosophical mind, in contrast to the phenomenal realm.
Our work should be able to achieve Phenomena
Mind fakes reality
Create an illusion
Your design can change the value of everything, you don’t have to build every single thing
Values = perception
3 faculties of the mind: Imagination, reason, memory
Imagination - truth (artefact) - Memory (something that can be understood) - Reason *COMPREHENSION*
Based on objective, create an artefact
Does it capture your attention
Don’t just be a designer, be a storyteller
Don’t be a storyteller, be the one who tells great story
You must break the rules
Stories don’t have to be complicated.. Keep it simple and real
Blair witch project
Create a spark for them to understand each other’s story
Next, we snatched to be first to consult! We came up with many more concepts during these few days and had some visuals for David to visualise too.
Idea 1
Different images about depression which makes it seem like a crime scene (eg, someone’s teddy bear which holds meaning to them is missing), some clear some fades, with what someone feels depression is behind the images and at the back of each image writes the crime that happened and conclusion, all hung up to create a big picture which is a monster (many people with depression says depression feels like a dementor from harry potter) the words “you won’t figure it out MUAHAHHA” will be played. Users checking out the exhibit gets to be ‘detectives’ with a small giveaway of a detective form whereby users get to pledge that he/her is in charge of dealing with the case of depression together with his/her friends.
Idea 4
Knifes and ropes hanging down and a head in the middle, sensor when people walk pass a voice says “i’m fine leave me alone”, if the person walks off, nothing else happen. If someone touches the knives and rope, the voice says “i didn’t mean it please stay” , if person continues to walk towards the head, there’s a note on the mouth that says “please save me, depression is killing me”
Idea 5
3 boxes connected with each other with a projector projecting at the top of the boxes showing a guy crying on his bed. The boxes contain a blanket, a teddy bear and a wig which the user is unable to see but only put their hands in. When the user puts his hands in the box containing the blanket and tries to pull or touch the blanket, sound will be activated saying “i’m fine, leave me alone, I don’t need you to lecture me”, the projection changes to show the person in it picking up his blanket that the user “pulled off” and going back to cry. when the users puts his hands in the box with the bear, the sound activated will say “ l’m fine! You don’t have to take everything away from me!” the projection shows the bear get snatched away but the person in it snatches it back and hugs it to cry. When the user goes on to the third box and touches the wig, the person in the projection would say “i’m sorry for whatever i said, i’m really not fine, i need your help”. Users then stamps their thumb prints on the boxes symbolising that they are there to help.
David’s comments:
Idea1
Why would someone in depression lose his body part, why would a person want to be a detective for your artefact?
Dotted lines means death.
How am i gonna bring them back?
If they all lose their heads cos they lose their minds?
What can they do since they found the bad guy?
Release the monster.
What if they take one card each person? Could be nails? Could be tearing it out?
If these people are real, add them as a friend on FB.
sound of people calling for help.
Could be other rewards or link to film or website.
Remove the common monsters in our minds, How can they get over it? Can the corpse form the face? Can use textures, do some experiment. FIND LUKE FOR HELP! Use same image.
What if it’s post it pad?maybe can use symbol, maybe can be mini facts at the back.
Headless corpse could mean its a common symptoms, can use psychedelic music.
How to know i can peel it off? Maybe can be a pledge so you can peel it off. People will see that the paper is curled up. Can put fan below to show that the monster is alive.
Idea 2
The projection mapping don’t do, too literal and tough because projection mapping, can show that the person go different phases of life.
Currently there’s no part 2.
What is the user supposed to do after? Andy warhol films.
What if the person is trying to sleep? Then what’s next? Must really show the struggle.
How to bring empathy to actor? All you need is a screen for people to watch instead of projection mapping.
Can use birdcage? To show trapped? Can use knives as a fence and all pointing towards him, show the fear. THEN WHAT’S NEXT? How can i help? One part can be he touching the screen, get the person to reenact the inner most feelings. Could be 2 TVs, interaction between the 2 TVs. Can tie TV with rope
Idea 3
Hashtag the film to continue watching, pole with faces.
Pole that is so bare and so white. Cast light on it.
Masks cannot be bought off art friend, could have female and male face mask.
Could show inner self being crazy. QR code to link. Can share the film, try not to put the client logo in. communication very structural, need good acting skills
Idea 4
Knives form fences, you ask me go away then you ask me stay so how can i help
Try to make things commercialised, can use logo.
Can try lighting etc if filming, fog machine etc experiment is smth you not too sure what to achieve.
Watch: Shutter island, person most inner fears.
Youtube: eraserhead look at the way it’s filmed (psychopath)
Damn… we still do not have a strong concept to start with. Time to buck up xinyi and joy (xinyi enjoy~~ HAHAHAH)
NEXT WEEK WILL BE BETTER!!!!

WEEK 4
Week 4 started with a short lecture then followed by consultation:
We consulted about our 3 ideas which was “I am fine”, “better than the other days”, and “ Moving out of depression”
Idea 1 “i am fine”
-Our idea not straight to the point
-Pretending to be okay is a coping mechanism, they can’t help feeling down. This is the only way to control.
-find more pics on images that show a second person in that person’s life
Idea 2 “better day than the rest”
-can be done in many ways
-dont confine yourself to physical space
-we won’t get our room (1x1m or 1.2x1.2m)
-if there are sensory touch points, the effect will last longer
-there should be a continuous memory of it
-sound>sight>smell (recall the memory)
-could be creating your own smell
-what are the other ways of making someone happy?
Idea 3 “Moving from depression”
-something physical for the person to engage in
-basketball, or like hitting smth
-something with incentives? Message? Coupon? Animation (gets exciting with every round?
= Make sure the concept is sustainable? If the exhibit isn’t there anymore, how am i supposed to continue with it?
= Get their attention first then continue with something online
We thought of a few concepts after consulting:
Idea 1:
Concept 1:
“Cabinet” like frames will be hung onto the wall with faces of people on it. They all seem normal, but holding a handwritten sign saying the words “i’m fine”. But once you open the “cabinets” you can find an object which represents how they are feeling deep inside. Everyone looks fine from the outside, but many do not know that some has thoughts trapped within.

Concept 2:
Projections of people saying that they are fine despite the pain they are going through ( a faked smile, a black eye etc)

Concept 3:
People walking in and out of screens saying that they are “fine” but with distinct visual and physical symptoms of depression.

Concept 4:
Mannequins decorated beautifully, however each mannequin has a hole at different parts of the body, eg the heart, to show that each person with depression is hollow and empty on the inside. When the user looks closer into these “wounds” sound will be triggered to tell the person how they feel. This is to show the different imperfections mainly related to the misinterpretations of depression. To show that they are still human and they should not be criticised.

Idea 2:
Concept 1:
User puts head in a box and he/she will experience tranquility “in another world”. The box would allow the person to experience through using 3 of his senses- sight, sound, smell. The box would be white and lighted with a tablet showing therapeutic sceneries.

Concept 2:
A broken and dirty wall with mainly colourful envelopes stuck on it. It encourages those without depression to write a letter with those with depression. Those that suffer from depression, gets to take the silly notes home to remind them that they are not alone in their fight. Not only does it make the person with depression feel happy, but also the one writing the note knowing he/she has helped someone during their ordeal.

Concept 3:
A wall, with a hand sticking out and a screen on the wall. Instructions to say “hold my hand i’ll bring you out of this” Once the audience hold the hand, a short video will play. Video will showing being trapped in a room and being brought out to see the beautiful world.

Concept 4:
A transparent bouncy castle like ball pit in a room with white balls. Quotes which makes your day is pasted on the balls. Not only is this relaxing it brings out our inner child where there was no worries at all then.

Idea 3:
Concept 1:
Punch the bag as many time as the troubles you have on your mind and every time you punch there will be sound of “ouch” and that’s how your family feels when you push them away
Concept 2:
Punching bag with negative voice overs, sound will die down when the user punches it, to show that they are fighting to defend their opponent, depression
Concept 3:
Canvas with black and white painting on it. User throws coloured paint balls at canvas to show that depression is not all black and white, you need a friend to add a little colour to your life.
On Wednesday, we learnt about editing with Premiere Pro with Luke. Afterwards was planning the case film with Alfred. We were first asked to do a “test” to show if the partners are on par with each other (yup we were).
Both of us was drained

BA DUM TSSSSS
Nothing was going through our heads then but we produced some sucky work. Let’s be positive, better than not doing at all YAY!

[XinyiENJoy is the name we regret not calling our tumblr]
Okay moving on..
FRIDAY!
Xinyi wasn’t here, Joy was so lonely… HAHA
David started the lesson with a lecture *ahem* which joy was late *ahem*
People has stopped feeling in the modern days (like feeling thankful etc)
The world has became more and more artificial
Reality is a collective mind
WHAT IS REAL!?
(This instantly made me think of Dr Strange)
Your project will set some sort of collective memory (has a place in their minds)
It doesn’t mean you have to throw all your info of it, just give them a push to research on it themselves
Make them try to affect other people on it.
How much will they touch and feel your work?
4 Stages of the image:
Things are becoming more and more artificial
Reflection of a profound reality: copy of the thing, believe to be correct
Masks & denatures a profound reality: distorts the reality abit, go in depth to question reality
Masks the absence of a profound reality: copy without original reality (surrealism with a tinge of reality)
It has no relation to reality, it is its own pure simulacra: unreal, artificial and hyperreal, depriving self awareness
Do they really understand?
- capitalism: everything needs money
We (or Joy, cos xy not here) consulted david:
Idea 1 “i am fine”
concept 1:
- masks of happy faces, peep inside the eyes is a image, 3D or 2D possible
- all maska happy
- then what? what is the CTA?
- spark them to help, don’t teach them
- Get them to take action
concept 2:
- You will need good casts
- Huge faces of the projections so you can capture people’s eyes
- Screen with dierent terrains, can have things on it
- google project mapping
- have potential
concept 3:
- No CTA again, too literal and it feels like a science centre kind of exhibit
what if for idea 1, you push people away instead of asking them to help?
Idea 2: “ Better day then the rest”
concept 1:
- no depression inside, how to distinguish this from being normal and having depression?
concept 2:
- People like to write rubbish so it might not work
- you have to make it into a serious situation so people will be serious about it
- how does it become part of the design?
concept 3:
- maybe not hands, maybe you can touch the person’s heart
- maybe a teddy bear that brings comfort, something precious to our character
- similar to Iris’s and Mirza work, so maybe not hands
concept 4:
TOO LITERAL AND IMPOSSIBLE
Idea 3:
no CTA
oh well, back to ideating...

WEEK 3
okay, we actually did week 3 last week, but we forgot to post it until we came to post week 4. so here is week 3.
Week three is more about consultations as this is the week for our proposal submission. We were more or less done with our research and stuff but we were lacking on the ideas. We keep getting stuck around the same ideas because of our objective. We consulted both huei hoon and david on monday and tuesday respectively. And this were what they told us.
This was the three ideas we used to consult with:
“IDEA 1- Saved”
Having fallen into a deep dark hole, it is tough to pull yourself out, unless there is someone helping you out in the process. Depression is not something someone should go through alone, that’s why you need someone you trust to go through it with you. The idea of letting people know the severity of depression and have them understand it so that they can eventually learn to help save a friend. Through this idea we want people to get to know what depression really is, know the symptoms of it and eventually know how to help their friends out of the pit they are in.
Many do not know the difference between being depressed and having depression. Being depressed means being upset for a short period of time whereas having depression lasts from 2 weeks up to years or more. People mixing them up would usually tell people with depression to quickly get over it, but it’s beyond their control if thoughts keep flooding their mind. They already have a strong critical voice already in their head. Don’t add on to their critical voice, don’t further criticise them. Going out for activities, bring them out, plan with them, do it together with them, give them a list. They don’t feel like doing anything so it’s about going to them and doing it together with them. Start with baby steps. plan activity schedule to bring structure in their lives, to keep themselves meaningfully occupied, so they won’t go back to being negative. Depression don’t just last for a few weeks and months, it lasts for many years and if there’s no professional help, it could become fatal in the end.
Depression has 5 stages, denial & isolation, anger, bargaining, depression then acceptance. Acceptance is the point where the person with depression either accepts the fact that he/she can’t be helped or he/she wants help.
“IDEA 2- It’s okay to say you’re not okay ”
People with depression hides behind a mask every single day in fear of criticisms like “you’ll get over it”, “it’s all in your head”, and so they pass by everyday saying that they are okay without the help of anyone. Eventually the hole they are in gets deeper and deeper and then it would in turn become fatal. Raising awareness of depression is one thing, but knowing the symptoms and then helping your friend is another.
Research shows that many people with depression are afraid to open up to anyone or to see a doctor because they are afraid that people think they are crazy. Thus they keep it to themselves which makes the situation worse. They feel that even if they were to tell someone, nobody would understand them. So having known that nobody would understand them, their families and friends should be first to know the situations they are in by looking at their body language and noticing their symptoms and help them with their depression, because the deeper they are into depression, the harder it is to cure.’
“IDEA 3- “I am fine”
The phrase “I am fine” have been overused by people that are actually not feeling fine. How many times you say “i am fine” and actually mean it? We don’t. In many situations, people ask “are you okay?” we will use “i am fine” to brush them off because we dont want to tell them what happened. We hide things to ourselves and refuse to open up to random people that ask us that question. So that goes for people with depression, if normal people wouldnt even open up to people, why would they? They will use the phrase “i am fine” to brush off everyone and what scary is they might look really fine but they are not. Thus our idea is to get them to take their mask of and talk to people about how they are really feeling deep down. Because depression can be fatal if not dealt with properly and people with depression cant deal with it alone, they need someone to be there and go through the tough times with them. Therefore, people around them have to be alert and take note of their actions and facial expressions in order to know what to do.
Research shows that many people with depression are afraid to open up to anyone or to see a doctor because they are afraid that people think they are crazy. They feel that even if they were to tell someone, nobody would understand them. Thus instead of seeking help, they like to hide behind a mask and pretend everything is fine. So having known that nobody would understand them, their families and friends should be first to know the situations they are in by looking at their body language and noticing their symptoms and help them with their depression, because the deeper they are into depression, the harder it is to cure.’
HUEI’S
Objective need more elaboration
last part- in order to help them
objective can split into 3 ideas
objective - make people understand a bit about depression when reading the objective
whats the misconception?
objective is a bit vague currently, try to explain in objective, eg, to clear the misconception between being depressed and having depression
to identify to psychological and emotional symptoms of depression
ways to help them
think idea from objective
idea should have a direction of what it is gonna be
Depress,
whats our idea about????
what you wanna show
what you wanna bring across
WRITE IT MORE LIKE A STRATEGY
what you wanna convey and ur approach
support what you wanna do
the creatives will —— open up for people to see
how you intend to inform what you wanna inform
tweak it to give it a slant
idea2 - to voice out to reach out
strategy for people to know and how to help their friends
targeting on people w depression or???
tell someone u trust- strategy
recognise and find someone to trust
if exercise, talking to friends
then find images related to it
if the person that is not fine the friend who ask will know that they are not fine
clue
symptoms to spot depression
DAVID’S
david’s consultation
to clear the misconception of depression and to help identify depression in order to help one overcome
our work make people realise they have and they think they can help themselves or help friend
someone you comfortable with instead of trust
depression people don’t trust easily
help identify, help them think bright side in that moment
providing them an environment
giving them hope
idea of being saved — not explaining depression
make them smile
if i have depression, how to tell my friend to help me
first idea should mention more about how to help friends and help yourself
empathise your friends
emphatise your friend with depression
instinct of empathy
what should you do if u empathise this person
what make them feel good
getting them help dispel them to make them do something they enjoy
many do not know they got Singapore
counselling in sp
reverse psychology
elaborate them more
don say girlfriend to boyfriend
hidden meaning behind i'm fine
many don’t want to say it
more depths to it
may be to prompt more
highlight when someone say they are fine they are not
ideas stuck around the same
what does i’m fine mean to today's world
becoming very surface
i’m fine is to brush u off
i'm fine w a sad face
probe more
superficial line
voice record of i’m fine and picture and video
you don’t know who having depression
mask they are wearing
idea over crossing
symbolic things that they see and always feel happy
look at something and they feel happy
flowers, tranquil
forget about the negative stuff
comfort symbolic item
research on calming constant motion
too educational
help them to overcome
objective more achievable
overcome it asap
work of comfort (who needs this?? bring friend over)
help people have the moment of tranquility peace
they know they can help
After consulting them, we were clearer about what an idea should be.
We eventually came out with 3 different ideas:
But we continued using the previous idea 3, just a little tweaking
“IDEA 1- “Better day than the rest”
Depression is like a boulder pulling you down, a boulder that makes everyday a bad day. Everyday is unbearable for people with depression. It is hard to help them to get out of depression because firstly they have to have a strong will power to do so. But as a friend, we can at least make their day better or much more bearable than their normal bad day. This idea will be to make their day better by making them forget what's bothering them in their minds (at least for a moment) and make them feel good, calm and comforted. It doesn't have to be something big or fancy, but maybe a small gesture or thing will do.
Through our surveys, we noticed that it is all the small gestures that make their day slightly better. Small gestures like offering them food, smiling at them or even just acknowledging their presence. There are also colours, paintings, sounds and lights etc that helps with depression. For example, Orange symbolize the sun, the color orange is said to treat depression by increasing alertness and concentration, and by decreasing feelings of dread. Blue is the most common color used in color therapy, blue is used to reduce tension throughout the body, helping with both anxiety and depression. It may also benefit a regular sleep cycle. Indigo has the calming effect thus indigo makes it a good choice for people with depression or anxiety. Violet, just like indigo, relaxes the mind and body.
We did a small survey on what people are content with, and these are the results:
Animals x4
friends x4
food x10
sleep x3
space/peace x2
book x2
A for submission
freedom
money
Love
music
relaxation x2
sports x2
losing weight
good weather x2
binge watching series
playing a musical instrument
nature
self x2
movie x2
family
helping others x2
Karaoke
“IDEA 2- “MOVING out of depression”
People with depression tends to feel tired everyday without doing anything. They like to coop themselves up in their house and hide from the world. However, letting them just stay in their house and overthink is not going to be good for them either (even if that's what they want to do everyday). Bringing them out to move their bodies and get engaged with activities help to distract them from overthinking. The idea is to accompany people with depression to participate in activities that loosens their body and relaxes their mind and thus make them feel a lot better after that.
Moving their bodies help them to distract their mind from what’s bothering them and getting them engage their body will make their mood a lot better. The main idea is to get people to participate in activities that loosens the body and relaxes the mind so they will feel good moving their body.
On friday, we submitted our proposals, but there was no lecture. We were actually done the day before, it’s good to be fast. HAHA PEACE OUT!

WEEK 2
Week 2 was all about finding the insights through our research, both primary and secondary.
We touched on how to get the answers we’re looking for from Huei Hoon’s lessons
Asking the right questions:
Know what you want to do with the data
Focus on making emotional connection with your interviewee
Connect with your interviewees in their preferred media
Understand the pain point in your interviewee’s lives
Don’t let big data prevent you from asking questions
Probe for powerful and emotional stories
What have i failed to ask that you think i should know to understand the issue
Hypothetical - if you…
Provocative - I have heard….what do you think….
Ideal - In your opinion…
Interpretive - What do you mean by…
Leading - do you think…
Loading - have you tried….
Multiple - Tell me your… what would you do...why
Deriving insights:
Prepare transcript of interviews and focus groups
Analyse data: identify key points
Identify recurrent themes
Cluster to similarities
Interpretations: search for patterns/ explanations
Insights: reveal new understanding or perspective
Afterwards we talked to Huei Hoon on our topic, this was what she said:
Due to what kind of events that leads them to depression?
When they are under depression, do they voice it out to someone or call for help?
Do they actually like company or welcome people to reach out to them?
There should be certain clues that someone with depression will be able to recognise.
Do certain things for them so they can rethink their situation.
Some people can cope and step out of their grieve, some do not have the skills/condence to do so.
Trapped in a situation in a deep hole where they don't see any future.
Bring them through different stages and by the end of the stage, they are enlightened.
Need someone who’s outside to guide them out.
They will never see any glimmer of hope as they are trapped.
from being withdrawn-going out to put up a strong front, it is already an improvement.
Think about the stages of depression
How they respond to certain things
try research how the different things are therapeutic for eg lights and colours
how to make the person feel comforted
note of encouragement
target the root cause of the depression
how to reach out to a person who shuns away from people? give small gestures
Which are the various stages u can help the person
Do they want to stay in their situation?
social experiment: see if people got patience to coax them all the way or just leave them alone
take a step back and look at the information that you have, dont get lost in all the informations.
if you rly want to change the mindset, need continuous eort.
online is great bc is anonymous
the bigger hurdles in life, to get over it you need to take a baby step
We also evaluated our results obtained from our mini survey:
Survey Questions for those without depression
How old are you?
What do you think depression is?
What do you think people who depression goes through?
Do you have a friend with depression?
If yes, how do you help him/her?
If no, what do you think they would need you to do to cheer them up?
Survey Questions for those with depression
How old are you?
How long have you been depressed for?
what did you think depression was initially before you got it?
So after experiencing it, what is depression all about?
How has the way you live changed?
What do you think people not understand about depression?
What would make your day better considering you have depression?
Interviewed: 58
Without depression: 40
With depression: 18
27 people says they have no friends with depression
Those who do not have friends with depression do not fully understand depression and what they go through.
They said that having depression is just an emotional state of mind and unnecessary overthinking. They unknowingly just defined being depressed and not depression
However they would offer a listening ear or just go out with them to have fun.
But they would just treat them like how they would treat everyone else.
In other words, Depression is not a mental illness to them but only a tough period of time because they don’t expect depression to last for years, but only days and weeks.
13 People says they have friends with depression
Says they are unable to understand depression fully
But says depression is a mental illness and due to extreme stress that leads to the person being emotionally unstable which eventually leads to isolating his/herself.
Says that their friends often over think and start to have suicidal thoughts because of their own thoughts torturing them.
They can’t seem to help themselves or control how they feel.
They act this way because of past experiences
To comfort their friends, they tend to hang out with them to ensure they are safe
Some stay positive around them hoping their positivity would rub off on them and so as to make those with depression feel like they are a baggage
They would lend a listening ear and give advice
But then again, they try their best to understand what they go through and how they feel
18 people says that they have depression
Half were male and half were female. This shows that depression can happen to anyone of any gender
From ages 17 to 27
Depression in them lasts for years with the longest with having depression for 16years
Most of them initially thought it’s just being sad and unmotivated for a long period of time till you feel suicidal
It was a never ending torture for them and they can’t seem to get out of it.
It kills their ability to function properly and do things that they need to do.
It is a mental handicap, it hurts them so much they feel it physically.
There is always a constant voice telling them they are not good enough, not worthy enough to be happy. That they shouldn’t even exist in this world because they don’t matter to anyone
They basically gave up on life. All they want to do is to lie in bed whole day and do nothing. They have difficulties waking up and facing the world every single day.
Everything they do needs additional effort from eating to sleeping or to greet people.
Their way of living has changed since having depression and their sense of worthlessness increases everyday. They live in a world of paranoia and isolate away from the world till being alone becomes their comfort zone and eventually suicidal. thoughts fill their mind and no one is there to talk to them and they eventually take their last breath. However some said that without having depression, they wouldn’t have a chance to experience a different kind of life and it makes them who they are now after having depression.
They all say that people without depression don’t understand what depression is and think that depression is something they created themselves by thinking too much.
They think people don’t understand because they claim they just want attention
They think it’s easy to overcome and it’s just a phase, and they don’t know how serious depression is to the point it affects their everyday life.
They think that people with depression are being weak and lazy. However, they do not understand that people who survives depression is the strongest because they have live with it for many years without trying to end their lives (even though they might have tried before).
Many of them gave the similar answers when asked the one thing that would make their day a little better and that was acknowledgement. (hugs and a chat without judgement)
Insights obtained:
People without depression do not fully understand depression
Depression is not easy to overcome and may last for years.
Just a little hug or chat would already make their day
Never lecture them, advise them
Depression can happen to anyone of any gender.
The next day. We touched on the more technical stuff of case films like how to animate and stuff or just simple studio photography that would help aid with our big idea or just the case film alone

We learnt to set up different lights and flash that aids in our photography. For this lesson, we mainly focused on high key portrait. There was five of us in a group and we took up different roles and started a mini photoshoot. Luke also showed us how the placement of the flash can affect our photos. For example, if the flash is higher and a little faced up, we are using the feather of the flash or we can place the flash lower and right in front of the model’s face to give a different feel. We also had a short sharing session where Luke showed us different group’s photos and told us how to improve on it. Overall it was a fun session, i can't wait for the next one.
-IMAGE FOR AFTER EFFECTS-
Afternoon, Alfred taught us new stuff on after effects again. We only had two exercises to do this week. However it was slightly tougher than the previous week. The first exercise was manageable as we only had to create a slight shadow behind the word and let it move. The second exercise was quite tough and we had to crack our brain to think of how to do. But slowly, once we get the hang of it, it is actually very easy, we just had to copy the right layer and edit the right thing.
We took a visit to our client, Care Corner Singapore for a short interview because we feel that not all the answers can be found simply on google alone. They were really excited to meet us, so were we!
Care Corner Singapore aims to impact the lives of people in Singapore by providing CARE and sharing LOVE. Care Corner Singapore Ltd was founded in 1981, in a climate of changes in the early 1980s, as economic competition in the region intensified and the rift between the wealthy and the lower-income -- in particular the Chinese blue-collar workers, widened.
Their services are offered to all, without regard to race, language or religion. Each year more than 50,000 beneficiaries are served by our network of centres that support infants from as young as 2 months, to seniors over 90 years of age.
Care Corner's children, youth, special needs, adult, couple and seniors services reflect our holistic range of services to the community. However they only have mandarin hotline currently as they do not have enough manpower and services and their hotline is basically for anything.
These are the questions asked:
What kinds of patients goes to Care Corner Singapore the most? (make sure depression is one of the most)
what is depression all about?
What causes depression?
How do you know if the symptoms lead to depression and not another illness?
What are the stages of depression?
What is one thing that many don’t know about depression?
How many Singaporeans have depression?
What is the age range with the most people having depression?
Do you think that youths in singapore know the seriousness of depression?
As counsellors, how do you help people with depression?
If i have a friend with depression, but she doesn’t want to go for counselling. As a friend, how can i help her?
What if you know that the person doesn’t want to talk about it, how do you reach out to him/her?
What should or should not be said to a person with depression?
How do we reach out to comfort them?
As a counsellor, what do you advise your patients to help keep their mind occupied or make them feel better?
Is there people that prefer to stay in the state of depression?
Do you have patients that stopped coming for counselling because they feel that is unnecessary?
Do you have any patients that have recovered from depression?
Out of how many patients have recovered from depression?
Does depression come back after they “recovered” from it?
These were their answers (some are joined together):
2 categories, families (marital, ), mental health issues (anxiety, depression, bipolar etc)
symptoms: clinical, over a 2week period for a person to be clinically diagnose, mood disorder, affects how you handle everything, persistent anxiety and sadness for more than 2 weeks, hopelessness, inability to cope, hobbies you can't find it possible to do what you like
different illnesses have different symptoms, but some is similar. How a psychiatrist would diagnose is looking at the number of symptoms, does it tie in with that certain issue.
stages of depression, 1. denial, after knowing you are depressed maybe can be 2. angry, angry with self or god etc. 3. acceptance level of recovery rate is different depends on the stage. before it comes to chronic depression. Those that becomes serious, possible to recover (but the factors surrounding the client affects too) like the friends, family, time he/she seek support, religion, age
It can happen quite subtlety, it’s a persistent sadness, not just sad for a while.
dk the stats of people with depression
13 - 50s, it can be up to end of life. people with depression starting to get younger (it's hard to say, people getting more and more hard to cope)
slowly but surely, there are more people raising awareness about it
it depends on the stage, maintaining a conversation. but if they are just facing a situation in their life, they will help them help them think in different perspective.
look out for your friends, and see the severity (symptoms), bring them to some medical attention. Encourage them to seek medical help, don’t just be there for the person but also encouraging the person. They might alr have strong critical voice alr in their head. Don’t add on to their critical voice, don’t further criticise them.
Avoid labeling words, like “siao” “stupid” “crazy”, don’t further bring up the critical voice in them
how to make them feel better? go out for activities, bring them out, plan with them, do it together with them, give them a list. They don’t feel like doing anything so it’s about going to them and doing it together with them. Start with baby steps. plan activity schedule to bring structure in their lives, to keep themselves meaningfully occupied, so they won’t go back to being negative.
There is people who don’t want to get out of being depressed. It’s also a choice, up to them. they always want to end their lives. deep rooted issues that need to be dealt with. so the person can find hope and find healing
there definitely would be clients that dw go alr, because they feel abit better alr so they stop coming. (quick fix) slight improvements make them feel better
there will always be, they go from places to places because cannot really connect.
there will be some that are able to manage their emotions better and have no control over it. they are able to regulate what they feel
depends, biological (inheritance) the person need more effort to the signs and symptoms, situational is easier to deal with (issues not as deep compared to psychological)
EXERCISE IS IMPORTANT, AND CONSISTENT (SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN)
These were some tips given to us by Care corner which could help greatly and we are really grateful for these tips:
Depression is not always grey and black, explore places where people have depressive paintings and art (can actually be beautiful) despite condition there is still hope.
lots of good artists and musicians have depression and they hide it in their art pieces.
CHECK OUT NATIONAL GALLERY, their way of expressing (ART THERAPY)

The next day was David’s lecture, we learnt about using our senses and how important it is to attract the user and to “control” his/her time.
Empiricism:
knowledge gained from all our senses based on the experience
Experience will affect you, and this will allow your brain to imagine etc
Your mind can imagine everything and anything and bring it to present
We were then made to put our hands in a box to show that our imagination changes allows us to believe things.
THINK OF ONE THING THAT CHANGED YOUR LIFE?
Memory is important
Every time you recall, you try to recall when you recall
Your memory stays afresh if you keep recalling
So how do you remind people that your issue is fatal, and they have to keep recalling the issue?
“Desire without belief is blind; belief without desire is empty” -Kant
Your work should set a belief
But you need state truth for user to spend time with your work
You need the truth to prove
Conduct experiments with experiences
3 faculties of the mind: Imagination, Reason and Memory
Memory: People use their memory based on what they have seen before
Imagination: People use their brain to imagine and think if there’s a memory to refer to
Reason: why is it here?
We then went out to T5 Manna to use our senses, we were in charge of hearing sounds in manna and this is what we came up with.
Try to use the user’s 5 senses. We go through our routine every single day but we never ever actually notice the usage of our 5 senses.
Use 5 senses to connect with our issue
Users use their minds to control them/ make the decisions
Humans can never tell if it’s real or not
= different people have different realities
= so what is real?
Your work is not real, it is you who tell the story
Your work is to provide information/ communication
Space & time is created by us. It is left in our brains
Leave a space in the user’s mind, walk away with that memory in their heads, change lives
IDEA= concept (soul) + form (body) IT’S LIKE WATER
Idea:
Possible course of action
Aim or purpose
Opinion or belief

WEEK 1
This week had been a series of lectures, briefings and research. Both of us came to the conclusion of using the topic of depression. We researched and tried our best to understand depression. We interviewed friends and families asking their opinion on depression and the process of having depression. Depression is a dangerous mental illness that slowly kills one that we were so afraid to pick up the topic. But we did it anyways.
We started school with our new CA brief... yay.......
We were briefed on the new CA and we realised we have to research deeper on what we had been doing.
On Wednesday, lessons with Alfred on After Effects because apparently we have forgotten all of what we have learnt and we need it for our case film in the end.
Friday came and the lecture was so deep we were trying so hard to understand.
We learnt about how your mind is so powerful, it influences you (if you tell yourself you can do it, you will be able to do it)
when your artefact is too interesting, and the user plays with your work, you’re controlling someone’s time. It is about how u make use of time, you can either make someone’s journey feel long, or short and have a takeaway. It is the experience, you have to communicate through design, make the user want to think about your design (how to make a boring topic interesting, make them empathise and stir their emotion, time will then last forever). ARTEFACT MUST ALWAYS TELL A STORY. Try to find meaning in everything, change perspectives, if you try to build everything from scratch, you may not be able to build a similar experience. Connect the senses if you want to make people lost in time. Use the placebo effect: influence someone to think they are influenced, if your work can really touch them deep down, you’re healing them, so you have to influence them with your work
Form is how to make it happen
TIME + SPACE = REALITY
3D
Our eyes are meant to see 3D
Research: surveys, experiments
= objective: where you wanna go, purpose
= Insight: common patterns of findings
How usually sp students travel to ion from dover
IDEA = CONCEPT + FORM
(soul) (body)
Idea is what you want to do
Concept is the idea of it, your findings
Same as NEWD, we went to Padlet and answered a few questions about our topic and we did this:
Question 1: What did we learn from our findings?
That depression is mostly chemical changes in the brain and changes the function and effect of these neurotransmitters and how they interact with neurocircuits involved in maintaining mood stability. Past events that causes long-term grief or provides extreme stress to the person may eventually lead to it. Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. Depression can become so severe that it dominates their lives and prevents them from coping as they used to, by affecting how you feel, think, and handle daily activities, such as sleeping, eating, or working and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. We found that many misinterprets depression as constantly being emo or sad and these depressed people refuse to snap out of their state, because they want attention.
Question 2: What are the similar patterns in those findings?
We found that people think depression is just being sad and that they can get over soon, but truth is that depression It's more than just be sad, the word 'sad' is an understatement. It's feeling empty, like your soul has left your body, it's being anxious, being afraid of everything and feeling so alone. It's like feeling stuck and trapped. And everything is so difficult. It affects your ability to even function like a normal person. We found that not people knows how to handle with people with depression and just ask them to get over it, but they can’t. On the outside, what other people see is just them acting up, and sometimes people only realise maybe only a fraction of the pain a depressed person is really going through, when they finally give up the fight and take their own life, then it’s too late. But that is the only time everybody stop in their tracks and notice them, notice the aggressive battle going on inside them. Then, they will believe, then they start to try to empathise but by then, it's too late. Depression feels like a bottomless pit, feels indeed like the black hole, where gravity feels 10 times stronger than usual and it’s hard to get out of it
Our insights:
People with depression are not sad, they are just trapped in their emotions
They have suicidal thoughts.
You can’t actually know what a depressed person feel until you have it yourself.
People without depression don’t really understand what people with depression feel and always persuade them not to be so negative or lecture them out of concern.
People with depression cannot just snap out of it because life is hard enough and they themselves have alr been very hard on themselves, with the self loathe and self blame.
People don't understand that, a depressed person is not a normal person, at the moment that they are still having depression, they are incapable of being and functioning like how a normal person can.
People with depression tend to push others away and isolate themselves and not talk about what they go through because they think too much, and they think first before it even happens, so they know that people that has never experienced it before will never understand them, hence to prevent the “lectures” they isolate themselves.
Depression, even the most severe cases, can be treated. The earlier that treatment can begin, the more effective it is. Depression is usually treated with medications, psychotherapy, or a combination of the two. If these treatments do not reduce symptoms, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and other brain stimulation therapies may be options to explore.
Neurotransmitters are naturally occurring brain chemicals that likely play a role in depression. Recent research indicates that changes in the function and effect of these neurotransmitters and how they interact with neurocircuits involved in maintaining mood stability may play a significant role in depression and its treatment.
We feel that depression is not well researched or experienced by people without and if any wrong move that will make that person with depression feel worse than he or she already is, it might become fatal.
Conclusion:
Many normal people do not know the fight that people with depression go through
Objective:
To change the misconception on what people think of depression so as to help them go through their journey in finding comfort.
The video on what depression is:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJ_S5Rjt_iI
We actually did another on Dyslexia and depression totally made Dyslexia a boring topic hence we chose to work mainly on depression. We consulted David and he said these:
Why do you get it? how?
How do i know if its depression
Someone who have gone through traumatic events?
Stressed out for more than 2 weeks?
How to grow out of it?
Help others or help themselves?
Objective-help themselves, more meaningful
When people with depression touch our thing- find comfort in it and feel good
Help them change their mood
What makes her feel good when she’s having depression.
We thought about all these and whatever he said and realised, what if we don’t look at it in a negative light but a positive light. And this got us thinking a lot.
During the weekends, we went to the National Museum to check out some installations and see how their artefacts impact people or just how they play around with projections or how they manipulate something.
