The Most Useful Features of a Camping Sleeping Bag You Need To Know
Tumblr media
When looking for the best camping sleeping bag, look for one that will keep you warm and comfortable. To choose one that is right for you, consider your personal tastes, weight and size. You want it to be light enough to carry but not heavy so that it is cumbersome. The fill is important as well because you want something that will keep you warm without freezing. Here are some of the features I find most useful in a sleeping bag.
Shape: It should fit comfortably in your hand. Best shape: Squares. Temperature rating: 19 F. Fill: Neoprene. Weight: About 4 pounds.
Fill: There are many different types, materials and filling options to choose from. Most commonly, people choose filling materials such as goose down, duck feathers, fleece, wool or synthetic fills. This determines the feel and quality of the bag. A high quality bag will feel quite comfortable against your skin. Be aware, though, that synthetic fills may be cheaper but they do not provide as much warmth as other types.
Temperature: A temperature rating indicates how warm the bag will keep you warm. For car camping, I generally prefer a warmer bottom. I find that a down-filled bag stays just as warm (or even warmer) as a similarly sized bag with a traditional filling. The key is to get a warm sleeping bag that will keep you comfortable.
Water Resistance: Does this bag have any built-in water resistance? A good quality bag does. If you are going to be camping in a wet environment (especially under the rain), you want a bag that can handle standing water or that will stay dry no matter what. If you plan on car camping, look for ones with at least an Open Cell (the best type) lining which allows you to fully wick moisture away from the body keeping you warm even when totally covered in water.
Ease of Use: How easy are they to use? I prefer a bag that fits well since I am one of those "people" that can't wear extra clothes very well. If it is too tight or too loose, it is of little use. On the other hand, I am a big fan of warmers that are easy to put on and take off. I don't want to have to deal with a sleeping bag that is difficult to put on or take off. I am always happy to be able to pull out my best sleeping bag quickly to avoid those long uncomfortable nights of freezing.
Price: There are many options in price, so be sure to factor in your cost to fill the bag. High quality bags (without synthetic fills) can be expensive. However, most high-end brands are well worth the investment. Another benefit of buying a synthetic filled bag is the ability to go outdoors without worrying about the bag getting ruined by rain, sleet, or extreme temperature changes. Many of the higher quality bags are also lightweight, so you don't have to worry about lugging a heavy, insulated bag around when you are camping or hiking in the cold.
Overall, what is important to me is comfort, price, durability, and insulation. The insulation factor is secondary to my comfort. Once I have found the perfect balance between all three, I will be more comfortable and will be warmer throughout the night. My goal is to stay as warm as possible for as long as I can in the temperatures that I will be experiencing. If that is accomplished with a properly fitted bag, then I know I have found the perfect sleeping experience for me and my family!
