Jeff Soto's art contains a lot of colourful, almost surreal, imagery. It is reminiscent of art from other sources, but I can't quite put my finger on it. There are numerous owls in his art. Most of the shape language in his art is simplistic but there is added detail within.

Mariko Mori's art features science-fiction mixed with Japanese pop culture and traditional Japanese imagery. Her photo, Pure Land, features Mori in a traditional kimono, floating above a photo of the Dead Sea. Typically, in traditional paintings, the faerie (who Mori takes the place of) is surrounded by mythical creatures. Mori subverts this by placing space elves called Tunes in place of the usual creatures, each of them playing a different instrument.

Martina Lopez uses vintage photos of people mixed with backgrounds of photos that could be of any time and any place. The juxtaposition of the old black and white photos and the colourful background.

Aziz + Cucher's series Dystopia features nude figures in poses reminiscent of statues or famous works of art. They remind me of dolls in their lack of sexual organs. It makes me think about how they reproduce. All of the people are white and conventionally attractive. They all look off into the distance at some unknown thing. The photos don't seem to have been altered digitally much, only the genitalia have been removed and smoothed. It's a dystopia because the figures appear to be perfect at first glance, but nothing is perfect. It's almost as if these figures represent roles we're meant to fit into in this dystopian future; we must be the perfect mother, or perfect photographer, or perfect soldier. In reality, people don't fit neatly into a box.

Erik Johansson's photography sparks one's imagination with the surrealist and fantastical nature of his works. You can see a bit of M.C. Escher in his optical illusion pieces as well as René Magritte in his portraits with cutouts. In his piece Cut and Fold, it makes me think of how the roads and stuff are destroying the earth. And his piece called Leap of Faith, it reminds me of suicide.

Aeolians are a peaceful race of aliens who live on the planet Aeolius and have no spoken language. The wind is the most important thing to them. Their horns are connected with organic strings that sing when the wind blows through them or if the Aeolians vibrate their horns. They communicate through clicks, whistles, and other throat noises. Their monarch is the one with the largest range. They are divided into classes based on the pitch they sing at. Once every couple decades, the current monarch may be challenged by other Aeolians wanting to test their range against the sovereign.

According to Wikipedia, "Intertextuality is the shaping of a text's meaning by another text, either through deliberate compositional strategies such as quotation, allusion, calque, plagiarism, translation, pastiche or parody, or by interconnections between similar or related works perceived by an audience or reader of the text".

Many of the areas where the subject is being photographed is considered to be a stereotypical place for women to be. The colours are also very vibrant which contrasts the horror movies Daniela Edburg finds inspiration from. All of the subjects are women which plays into the horror movie damsel in distress, but she subverts it by adding food and overindulgence to the art pieces.

With his silhouette cutouts, Charles Cohen seems to be doing multiple things. To me, he seems to be taking any and all individuality out of the figures. Some people could interpret it as the artist protecting the identity of the subjects, while others could interpret it as completely objectifying the figures so they have no personality and are merely things to look at.

Christian Northeast's art is very colourful and has a vintage qualility somewhat. The details vary from art piece to art piece, but most of them are fairly detailed. He took inspiration from outsider art, cartoons, and antique signage.

18.09.23 Composition
The artist uses a lot of different elements of composition in their piece. They use isolation and emphasis with the dark island in the middle surrounded by colourful water and sky. The artist also balances the colours of the sky and water to the large, blank clouds which gives the audience a respite from everything on the canvas. They also use movement in the water to draw your eye to the water and up to the island. Lastly, the majority of the colours used in the piece are cool colours such as blue, purple, and green which harmonises the piece.
