Southwestern Energy Helps Restore West Virginia's Cheat River
New Post has been published on https://www.thetrafficseo.com/uk-business-news/southwestern-energy-helps-restore-west-virginias-cheat-river/
Southwestern Energy Helps Restore West Virginia's Cheat River
ALBRIGHT, W. Va.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Southwestern Energy Company (NYSE: SWN) today announced the successful completion of the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection’s (WV DEP) Cheat River’s Muddy Creek watershed restoration project. This was made possible by an innovative partnership between Southwestern Energy and the WV DEP.
Muddy Creek was severely impaired from unrelated, third-party acid mine drainage (AMD) from abandoned mines over many years. Although in no way associated with the contamination, Southwestern Energy saw this partnership with the WV DEP as an opportunity to restore Muddy Creek to its natural state, consistent with our commitment to environmental stewardship.
The AMD project treats the contaminated water, which is then returned to the stream, helping restore Muddy Creek to a natural state.
“It’s a great day for the Cheat River watershed,” said SWN President and CEO Bill Way. “Signs of aquatic life are emerging, evidence of improved water quality. We’re proud to be part of this successful and meaningful partnership with the WV DEP. This is part of our demonstrated commitment to being fresh water neutral – meaning we return one gallon of fresh water for every gallon we utilize in our operations. So far, the company has sponsored projects that have returned over 9 billion gallons of fresh water.”
“The work that the WV DEP’s Division of Land Restoration has done, in collaboration with staff from Southwestern Energy, has been truly amazing,” said WV DEP Cabinet Secretary Austin Caperton. “This pioneering watershed approach to AMD treatment has produced spectacular results through public-private partnership.”
“I’ve said for a long time that our natural resources and the beauty of our environment are some of the greatest treasures we have here in West Virginia and that we ought to do everything in our power to make sure they stay that way,” Governor Jim Justice said. “And that’s why I’m so thrilled to see the fantastic work that’s been done by our Department of Environmental Protection, in partnership with Southwestern Energy, to breathe life back into Muddy Creek through this incredible restoration project. All I want is more goodness for West Virginia. And the work that’s been done here is truly good.”
Way concluded, “Environmental stewardship is a key tenet of the company’s business strategy, including steps to conserve water, reduce air emissions and protect the environment. Southwestern Energy has completed 10 water conservation projects in our areas of operation across four states.”

Election results: Lib Dems win Cotswold District Council
New Post has been published on https://www.thetrafficseo.com/gloucestershire-news/election-results-lib-dems-win-cotswold-district-council/
Election results: Lib Dems win Cotswold District Council
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Image caption The Lib Dems overturned a previous Tory majority of 10 to take control
The Lib Dems have taken control of Cotswold District Council from the Conservatives.
The Tories lost their majority of 10 seats, with the Lib Dems winning 18 of the 34 seats up for grabs.
The Greens, who launched a local group in the area four years ago, won their first seat, taking the Rissingtons ward from the Tories.
Another seat was taken from the Conservatives by an independent candidate.
The council’s Conservative group leader Tony Berry said he would ask the prime minister to “consider her position very carefully” after the local election results.
However, Mr Berry said: “I do recognise there are very, very many things in play here.
“Not just protest votes, but I think when we look into the figures we also find there’s a much lower turnout than usual and of course that skews everything. It’s a very unusual set of circumstances.”

Media captionConservative Party leader at Cotswold District Council Tony Berry: ‘I’d ask PM to consider her position’
Asked what reasons he was picking up on the doorstep about why people were not voting Conservative, Mr Berry blamed Brexit and “professional politicians who are basically working for themselves rather than necessarily what is best for the country”.
He said his message to Mrs May would be “to consider her position very carefully”.
Meanwhile, another independent candidate, Kevin Painter, is seeking legal action after he lost to the Conservatives by one vote in Tetbury Town ward, where there was a tie.
Officials then looked through the spoiled ballots and accepted a paper where the voter had written “Brexit” with an arrow to the Conservative candidate.
Mr Painter described the decision as “absolutely shocking”.
The council said it had consulted the guidelines in the Electoral Commission’s booklet on doubtful papers and examples within election law books.
Analysis
By BBC Radio Gloucestershire politics reporter Hayley Mortimer
After 16 years of Conservative control the Liberal Democrats have won enough seats to take over the running of Cotswold District Council.
As counting got under way it became clear that smaller parties and independents were benefiting from a disenchanted electorate.
In the end, the Liberal Democrats took seven seats from the Conservatives – enough to have a majority.
It was a disappointing night for the Conservatives – they also lost a seat to an independent and to the Green Party.
It is the first time a Green councillor has been elected to the district council.
The Conservatives are blaming the loses on Brexit. Group leader Tony Berry said it was time for Theresa May to resign.
He said many Conservative voters simply stayed at home in protest.
But the Lib Dems said there were local issues at play too, in particular the council’s handling of the Chesterton development – 2,350 homes on the outskirts of Cirencester.
The Conservatives have received a lot of negative press attention and the Lib Dems say that voters are just fed up.

Local elections: Forest of Dean remains under no overall control

It leaves no party in overall control of the authority.
The election saw the the former Tory leader of the council, Patrick Molyneux, defeated in the St Briavels ward.
All 38 seats in the council were contested. There were 10 fewer seats due to boundary changes.
Elsewhere in the county, the Liberal Democrats took control from the Tories in the Cotswold District Council election.
The independent Kevin Painter lost out to a Conservative councillor by one vote in the Tetbury town ward after a ballot paper with the word “Brexit” was accepted rather than a cross.
Nationally The Conservatives and Labour have faced a backlash at the ballot box over the Brexit deadlock, with smaller parties and independents winning seats.
In England so far, the Tories have lost more than 850 seats and 30 councils overall, while the Liberal Democrats have gained more than 500 seats, and Labour has lost more than 90 seats.

HMRC forced to delete five million voice files
New Post has been published on https://www.thetrafficseo.com/uk-business-news/hmrc-forced-to-delete-five-million-voice-files/
HMRC forced to delete five million voice files

The voice records of five million taxpayers are being deleted by the UK’s tax authority, as the way they were collected broke privacy rules.
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) failed to gain explicit consent from individuals before signing them up to the voice ID system for telephone enquiries.
Campaigners accused HMRC of creating “biometric ID cards by the back door”.
The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) said there had been a “significant” breach of data laws.
“Innovative digital services help make our lives easier but it must not be at the expense of people’s fundamental right to privacy,” said Steve Wood, deputy commissioner at the ICO.
Now the BBC has learned that the tax authority’s system will continue despite the deletions.
Sir Jon Thompson, HMRC chief executive, said: “I am satisfied that HMRC should continue to use voice ID.”
“It is popular with our customers, is a more secure way of protecting customer data, and enables us to get callers through to an adviser faster,” he said in a letter to HMRC’s data protection officer.
How does the system work?
In a bid to speed up the much-criticised HMRC helpline, people were invited to use the voice recognition system, rather than the normal security checks.
The scheme, launched in 2017, asks callers to repeat the phrase “my voice is my password” to register.
Image copyright Getty Images
Once this task is complete, they can use the phrase to confirm their identity when managing their taxes. HMRC passes the voice through an algorithm to instantly confirm their ID.
Similar projects have been launched by banks and other providers, although they have not always been entirely successful, as this BBC investigation found.
What went wrong?
Privacy campaigner Big Brother Watch complained about the audio signatures system, claiming users were “railroaded” into using it as they were not given the choice to opt out.
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which came into force across the European Union in May last year, requires organisations to obtain explicit consent before they use biometric data to identify someone, including voice recordings.
HMRC has been told by the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) that it was not adhering to the data protection rules. In effect, it had automatically pushed people into the system without explicit consent.
The commissioner is issuing the first enforcement notice of its kind to HMRC, under GDPR rules, to ensure the data is deleted. As a result, no fine will be levied.
What happens now?
The tax authority changed the way it sought permission for voice ID in October. Some 1.5 million people have called HMRC since then, and said they wanted to continue using the service. Their records have been retained.
But HMRC has started to delete the voice records of the remaining five million who enrolled into the system before October and who have not called or used the service since.
It said the records would be deleted “well before” the Information Commissioner’s deadline of 5 June.
Silkie Carlo, director of Big Brother Watch, said: “This is a massive success for Big Brother Watch, restoring data rights for millions of ordinary people around the country.
“To our knowledge, this is the biggest ever deletion of biometric IDs from a state-held database. This sets a vital precedent for biometrics collection and the database state, showing that campaigners and the ICO have real teeth and no government department is above the law.”
Mr Wood, deputy commissioner at the ICO, said: “We welcome HMRC’s prompt action to begin deleting personal data that it obtained unlawfully. Our investigation exposed a significant breach of data protection law. HMRC appears to have given little or no consideration to it with regard to its voice ID service.”
