Is my Bing app giving me a sign? I miss Chicago sooooooo much!! Especially around this time of the year when barbecue were jumping off the beach and a walk away, trips to the zoo—for free, events nonstop, communities working hard, community gardens, working and teaching at the nonprofit for underserved youth, and my girls!!!!!!!! But I love Philly too...my sons, my granddaughter, my parents, my siblings, and relatives, my homegirls and my homies, teaching, and I see countless opportunities to do work here and get my neighborhood a sustainable neighborhood to build on to the neighboring one. But my heart yearns for Chicago. I feel like my work isn’t done in both cities. In my memoir, grapes to wine, I have dedicated an entire chapter to this verse. I tell the stories of my grandmothers and great-grandmother and how their spiritual connections to the Lord bound me to my spiritual connection to God. It was never about being religious with them; it was about being spiritually whole and being spiritually connected—to model faith and love. Apart from their love and their lives, I have no idea what woman I would be today. Let alone what kind of mother I would be. Apart from my Lord, I don’t know how I would’ve been able to face life and woman up. I will always be connected. However, life isn’t about mastering many things. I take pride in what I’ve gained and learned, but in the end it’s clutter on a résumé and exhausting to share. I am learning to master on what’s necessary: teaching and writing. Everything else is everything else, but still loaded with valuable lessons. You see, I’ve heard my calling yearrrrrrs ago. I avoided it like the Black Plague. I sought out to learn and gain other experiences until I found myself sitting under the glare of God, wondering when I was going to stop running around. I was born a writer and dancer and I developed into becoming a teacher of both for one purpose: to save our children. So, wherever you are, make sure it lines up with who you are.
