The Amazing Life of a Travel Blogger
Meet Gigi. Traveller, explorer and down right awesome woman!

My friends call me Gigi. I guess I’m a bit of a wanderer. I grew up in a tight-knit family here in Melbourne with parents who fostered in us a love and passion for travel from a very early age. We were lucky enough to see most of Australia as kids. Growing up, that passion continued and I went to Japan on exchange as a 15 year old. It was my first solo trip and a grand adventure. The beginning of what I now realize is an adoration for being in a foreign land and a sense of unbridled freedom - exploring new cultures, learning new languages, and the thrill of feeling outside my comfort zone. A love affair with adventure. I did what most Australians do after uni, and travelled around Europe for six months before living and working in London for a couple of years. Returning home for a bit, I then quit my job again (my poor parents!) to travel around South America for another six months. Returning home to Melbourne for a short minute, I quickly accepted a corporate marketing role in banking and moved to Sydney in 2006. Although i stayed for seven years, I still had a burning desire to live in New York City. Having visited pretty consistently from the age of 21, I was addicted to the energy there. I knew I needed to one day make it my home. In 2012 when a promised-transfer to our NYC office kept getting delayed, I decided to quit my job and move to the US on my own accord. Stopping in California to visit some friends on the way, I fell in love with LA instead. The city I once found ugly, soulless and frustrating to navigate (as a tourist), ended up being everything but. A happy, sunny, and opportunistic place to live, LA offered up love and adventure with wild abandon. The creative energy was addictive. There is something to be said for living between three amazing energy forces - the ocean, the mountains and the desert – I was completely hooked.
Since then, for the past four years, I have lived on and off in California (between LA and Santa Barbara). I have also done short stints living in Berlin, Mexico, NYC and Tel Aviv. I sublet rooms here and there, I stay with friends and I pretty much live out of a suitcase - but I couldn't be happier. I am the happiest when I am out and about meeting new people, eating good food, hunting down good coffee and being surrounded by nature. I love the random things that happen when travelling and the far-too-frequent serendipitous moments.

How did and what made you start your blog?
When I arrived in the US I only had a tourist visa, this meant that every three months I had to leave the country. Often that meant booking the cheapest plane ticket I could find to escape the US for a couple of weeks. I ended up in all sorts of weird and wonderful places and many compromising, often hilarious situations. Friends started putting pressure on me to share my travel stories, photos and recommendations. Having always loved travel, and having always been pretty attached to a camera, I decided I should. A good way to bring together all the random scribblings in my notebooks, emails and spreadsheets into one central place that could be shared. So I started ‘It's Beautiful Here.’ A place to share the beautiful things I find along the way. I try to travel more like a local and less like a tourist, and I love finding interesting and inspiring local people in each city to feature in our ‘Spotlight Series’. I am by no means a professional writer, and I am certainly no expert photographer, but I don’t pretend to be either, that was never my intention. ‘It’s Beautiful Here’ is simply a true and authentic account of my travels, and hopefully sometimes even the tiniest source of travel inspiration for anyone who happens upon it.

What does a normal day entail for you?
That's a good question! I’m not really one for routine. When I am travelling, it normally involves me zipping all over town trying to get to all the places I have read about before my trip - places to eat, good coffee spots, awesome hotels, farmers markets, design and architecture, and out into nature - taking a lot of pics along the way. I walk everywhere, either that or I rent a city bike and ride instead. It always involves at least one coffee a day, often two, and I’ll normally sit in that particular cafe for at least 1-2 hours, catching up on emails, meeting locals, updating my city guides or doing my daily Instagram posts. I also try to keep in touch with friends and family back home. And I always try to fit in something active - a hike, yoga or a swim.
When I am home, it’s much the same. I spend a lot of time working out of cafes (and drinking too much coffee), checking out new places in town, meeting people, catching up on writing, and researching my next destination.

Do you have anything you keep by or around you to inspire you creatively?
Music. I am always surrounded by music. I find this the one thing that inspires me the most. I also love reading other travel and design blogs. And nature, there is almost nothing as satisfying and inspiring as being outdoors in the fresh air. If I’m near a mountain, I’ll hike it. If I am near the ocean, I will swim. Obviously it’s not always possible, but it’s definitely where I am my happiest. Lastly, also Instagram, as crazy as it may sound. I find that Instagram has become my greatest travel research tool. I spend hours trawling through hashtags, trying to find little off-the-beaten track places and things that locals are doing in their city that are lesser known and would make for interesting travels. I find it incredibly inspiring.
What do you love about what you do?
I absolutely love that I am doing what I am most passionate about, travel. I pinch myself everyday that I am lucky enough to be out and about, bouncing to my own beat, travelling where and whenever I want to, meeting new and interesting people, trying new food, learning about new cultures and languages. All the things that make me happy. I really feel that I am living. I feel a huge sense of freedom. Obviously I don't have a lot of the luxuries that come with having a full-time, well-paid corporate job, but I don't miss that at all. I feel I am so much happier and feel so much more fulfilled doing my own thing and really living my life. I can’t put into words how precious what I have here has become to me. I give it all my heart.
What is some advice to someone if they are looking for a career in the creative field?
Be open, take risks and stay positive. Obviously making any big change (creatively or not) will sometimes feel overwhelming or intimidating, but if you have faith in your idea and are truly passionate about what you are doing, you will make it work. I believe that. Talk to as many people as you can. Tap into your networks. And dream big.
What are some of the quirky things you always do when travelling?
Talk to randoms. A lot. I often travel solo and love making new friends wherever I go. I reach out to people I have read about in a city before going, and then hit them up for their local tips and recommendations! I can also be quite forgetful. I have been known to miss flights (often), lose passports (two last year), break the zipper on my bag as I am about to board a flight, drop my phone down a toilet - you get the drift.

Whats an interesting fact about you that most people wouldn’t know?
I have very strange toes. They are permanently curled over! Someone once commented “oh but that means you must be really good at rock climbing because your toes can grip on to the side of the mountain!” I’d never looked at it like that (nice try).
What creative’s do you look up to?
Ahhh so many. I look up to my housemate Mel in LA (in so many ways) who founded a conscious living platform called The Bharani Effect, but more recently launched a series of Conscious Living City Guides. I look up to Jac from The Broadplace who is passionate about helping people live a higher-grade life. I am constantly delighted by Spanish artist Manuela (of Gang and the Wool in Barcelona) and her creative floral styling. I look up to all my friends who are artists, musicians and actors who have consistently and passionately believed in themselves and their craft enough to try and make their creative dream a reality - despite the constant knockbacks. I feel inspired creatively spending time with my two gorgeous god-daughters, Evie and GG, who have wild and beautiful imaginations. And I also look up to anyone who is pursuing their dream and doing what they truly love. But lastly, and probably mostly, I look up to my two younger sisters who are two of the most creative, kind, driven, smart and stylish women I know. They constantly amaze me and are a continued source of inspiration and support to me. My life would be nothing without them.

What are your top 5 travel tips?
1. Remember your passport! It sounds stupid, but you can’t get far without it (I’ve tried).
2. Use Instagram for your travel research. By trawling through different hashtags, you can really dig deep and find some cool, off-the-beaten track, local favourites in a city before you go.
3. Stay open and don’t plan too much. Roll with the unexpected.
4. Be polite, kind and culturally considerate. I like to learn at least three words of the country’s language I am visiting. I find this the easiest and kindest way to show you are making an effort in a foreign place. And smile.
5. Eat everything. Walk everywhere.

Quick fire round:
Favorite book: To Kill a Mockingbird.
Favorite film: Romeo & Juliet (Baz's one).
Favorite food: Good bread (like real-deal sourdough, or a good fruit and nut loaf.) That, or pasta.
Favorite word: Serendipity - because it sounds pretty and really, who doesn't love the idea of a happy coincidence or accident that changes our lives for the better.
Pet hate: Rude people. Traffic. Queuing.

Humans of Typo: Mikala

Mikala is the Ecommerce Merchandise Coordinator; she’s been with Typo since 2012 and loves everything digital. We asked Mikala what she loves about her role and the field she is in. “The online realm is ever growing, once you are in you will never want to leave. Working on a website feels just as good as shopping it!” Sounds dreamy!
On a completely unrelated note, Mikala has never changed a light bulb. Ever. In her whole life. She lives in the dark.

Chinese New Year

The Chinese New Year is based on the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar, which dates indicate the moon phase at the time of the solar year. The reason why Chinese New Year falls on a different date each year is because a lunar month is approximately two days shorter than a solar month, so to play catch up to the solar year, an extra month is added in every few years.
Traditionally, celebrations begin on New Year’s Eve and will last for around fifteen days. In the lead up to the festivities people will clean their houses and decorate their space with New Year decorations. The time is spent with family and close friends as there is normally a seven day holiday period around the New Year.
With each new Chinese New Year, there is also a zodiac year reflected in one of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac. 2016 is the Year of the Monkey, we’ve got everything you need to know about 2016 and how it will shape your year.

Year of the Monkey (猴 hóu)
Years of the Monkey: 1920, 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2016, 2028
Luck & Compatibility
Lucky Numbers: 1, 7 & 8 Lucky Colours: white, gold, blue
Unlucky Numbers: 2, 5 & 9 Unlucky Colours: red, black & grey
Perfect Matches: Ox & rabbit Bad Matches: Tiger & pig
Personality Traits

Strengths Eager, sociable & innovative
Weaknesses Jealous, suspicious & selfish
People born in the year of the monkey are said to be highly intelligent generally, but especially when it comes to career and wealth. They are also said to be very sociable and quick witted in their responses. Their intelligence can sometimes lead to them looking down upon others and a short temper to suit, but their honesty and gentleness tends to make up for it.

Around the World on New Year’s Eve!

New Year’s Eve; a time for resolutions, a midnight pash and well let’s face it, more than a couple of drinks. While you’re shaking your thang on the dance floor and picturing that pash, have a think about all of the other things going on in this great big world of ours. Here’s a mini snap shot of how some other cities will be celebrating the end of 2015 and the beginning of 2016.

If you happen to be in Paris this evening, here are a few things you can do (if just being in Paris isn’t enough).
1. 58 Tour Eiffel You could spend the night taking in the sights of Paris from the Eiffel Tower. Unfortunately tickets to this sold out about five years ago but you could just drink some wine under it, the view will just as spectacular after the third glass anyway.
http://www.cometoparis.com/catalog/new-years-eve-58-tour-eiffel-2201
2. The Moulin Rouge Nothing says ‘hellllooo 2016′ than nipple pasties... And a nice meal. With over 100 artists on the bill for New Year’s and an endless supply of champagne, the Moulin Rouge is a seriously good pick to bring in 2016.
https://www.moulinrouge.fr/reservations
3. Marina De Paris Jump on a boat (a fancy boat) and eat your way into 2016, with the three hour long dinner service and then dance it all off until 2am. If you’re partial to a little spew, we don’t recommend this option.

You’re in Amsterdam, you work out the rest.
*If you’re reading this and you happen to be in Amsterdam.... WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! GO OUT AND GET OFF THE INTERWEBS!

From the cobblestone streets drenched in history and humming with stories, London is a great place to spend New Year’s Eve. But whatever you do, make sure that when the clock strikes midnight you say to everyone you meet ‘top of the morning to ya!’
1. Fire Works Free, fun and soooo pretty! See in 2016 with a spectacular display of fireworks over one of the most iconic cities in the world!
2. Laugh! Just stand around and laugh! Just kidding, that would be super lame. Go see a comedy act. Many of the best comedy clubs in London do a dinner and show package, check out the link below for some options. Dancing is optional but we highly recommend it because it’s the best free fun in the world!

If New York is the city that never sleeps, then you know you’re in for a great NYE!
1. The Roxy Hotel If you’re into things that are a little wacky, then The Roxy Hotel on NYE will hit the spot. Inspired by Salvador Dali’s surrealist balls, prepare to enter a wonderland of melting clocks, costumes that’ll make your mind melt and music that is down right out-of-this-world.
http://www.roxyhotelnyc.com/
2. Disco Extravaganza! Nothing says NYE than getting your boogie on at a disco. Grab your white flairs, platforms and channel your inner Disco Stu at the Eldorado Auto Scooter Ride and Arcade on Coney Island.
http://nickysiano.com/NEWYEARSEVE2.html
3. RINSED 5: NYE 2016 (Our personal pick!)
Profesh partiers (yes, it’s a job) RINSED are throwing a NYE bash to remember. They are converting an abandoned warehouse with indoor/outdoor furniture and decorated ‘Terminator’ style whilst pumping out tunes from a sound system developed by NASA. How long is the flight from Australia to NYC? Too long. Damn!
If it wasn’t cool enough... The location is STILL TBA... ‘Whatevs guys, locations are just a state of mind.’
Rinsed, Location TBA, Brooklyn, buy tickets here

NYE or Shogatsu in Tokyo has a lot of tradition tied to it and isn’t just about partying hard. So, if you find yourself in Tokyo this NYE, here are some cool things to experience that you won’t get to anywhere else.
1. Stay In Watch Kohaku Uta Gassen on television... It’s a bit of a NYE musical tradition there.
2. Visit a Shrine or Temple For a truly amazing place to be to see in 2016, visit a shrine or a temple on NYE. It just might be the most inspiring place you could be to bring in the New Year.

Sydney is a great spot to spend NYE and it’s also one of the first places to see in the new year in the world (besides NZ - they win).
1. Fireworks Probably one of the most spectacular displays of fireworks you will ever see happens on Sydney Harbour. Rent a hotel room for a balcony view or simply go for a wander along the water.
2. Ride a Kangaroo! Just kidding, you cannot and should not ride kangaroos. Ever.
Wherever you are spending NYE in the world, enjoy every second and remember that it’s not about where you are, how good the party is (although that helps) or how many cocktail choices there are on the menu. It’s about who you are with and making a fresh and positive start to the new year.
HAPPY NEW YEAR! From Team Typo!

How to Wreath
Make a wreath for your front door, dorm room door or bedroom. It’s so easy you’ll have Martha Stewart knocking your door down for your DIY Christmas tips!
What you’ll need:
- A foam wreath from your local craft store
- A three pack of Typo Christmas wrapping paper
- A centre piece, we’ve used a Typo Wooden Letter
- A pack of push pins or glue gun
- Some wire or string
What you’ll need to do:
Using the wrapping paper, begin cutting long strips, roughly 1cm in width.
Curl the strips with the blade of your scissors or a paper-bone folder.
Attach to the foam wreath with a pin or glue gun.
Repeat these steps until the entire wreath is covered.
Using wire or string, secure the wooden in the centre of the wreath.
Sit back and watch your neighbours get jealous!

Meet Mrs Claus
Move over Santa, Christmas has a new front woman and she’s ready to shake things up! Wife, elf wrangler and reindeer handler, this is one lady that doesn’t beat around the mistletoe. She’s no stranger to the limelight, but for all the wrong reasons, making headlines all over the world for her wacky and often outrageous behavior.
She’s always been in the background every Christmas and now it’s her turn to shine!

We sat down with the new leading lady and asked her a few questions:
1. Mrs Claus, why, after so many thousands of years are you wanting to be the front woman of Christmas?
Haha! Darling, I’ve always been behind every Christmas since the beginning. Santa could never coordinate such a big job all on his own. Those cheeky elves need to be kept in line and Santa is just a big softie and can’t whip them into shape.
2. Why should the public trust you with their Christmas?
Look, I’ve done the hard yards and even though Martha Stuart makes it look so easy to decorate a tree, wrap loads gifts of gifts, while doing it with a smile the truth is it’s not that easy! I’m happy to tell everyone that but I’m also about solutions. I want to share all of the quick tips and tricks I’ve picked up over the years. I’m here to make it easy for everyone.

3. What are some of those tips you can share with us now?
- Guys, when she says that she ‘doesn’t want anything at all’ she’s testing you. What she really means is ‘you better know me well enough that I shouldn’t have to tell you what I want’. Go to Typo and get her a gift or risk finding yourself on Tinder by Boxing Day!
- The best way to avoid awkward small talk with your in-laws on Christmas Day is to pretend you’re asleep.
- If you don’t wrap it, it’s not a present. WRAP IT DAMN IT!
4. Mrs Claus, you are lactose intolerant, how will this impact Christmas eve and the millions of children that leave a glass of milk out.
Two words. Mulled. Wine.
We’ve gained access to a couple of images of Mrs Claus that surfaced a couple of years ago that caused a lot of backlash.

Halloween Just Got Owned.
Halloween is not far away now and if you don’t have a costume you should.... PANIC!!!!!! Just kidding, you got this! Here’s some costumes that are too cool for school and pretty simple too (except the rabbit one, no idea where you’ll find one of those to be honest).
1. Mia Wallace, Pulp Fiction
White shirt, black pants, black wig, red lippy and John Travolta. Easy!

(AP Photo/files)
2. Daria & Jane, Daria
If you don’t know who these two are you lived a deprived childhood. Deprived we tell you!

dorkly image
3. Frank, Donnie Darko
Honestly, we have no idea how you could get a costume like this, let alone travel through a time continuum. Good luck.

static.gamesradar
4. Beetle Juice, Beetle Juice .... BEETLE JUICE!
Lucky for you terrible black and white striped suits are totes in fashion right now, so as long as you’re willing to drop a heavy $500 then you’re sorted. Face paint too and a lot of hairspray.

indiewire
5. Wednesday Adams, The Adams Family
White shirt, black dress, wig or plaited hair, white face powder, dark eye make up and a dismal outlook on the world. Sounds more like Monday than Wednesday to us.
reddit
6. ‘Ex-Wife’, Mean Girls
Two words. Mean Girls.

xovain
7. Fred, Drop Dead Fred
If you’ve got red hair, this is your costume. Happy hunting for an all green suit though.

.... And if all else fails, just be a mouse like Karen.

Meet the Artists
We’ve collaborated with four super talented artists to create four unique, and exclusive to Typo colouring books. Each page has been intricately illustrated for your colouring pleasure!
We sat down with all four and got to know them over a cup of coffee (okay, okay, it was a cocktail).
Lauren Green

Ever since Lauren was able to pick up a pen she’s been drawing her way to big and often quirky things. She’s the free-spirited creative who treks the globe in search of adventure and new inspiration for her illustrations. Her most recent trip to South America has been the main influence for this particular book and it’s full of wild animals, out there landscapes and psychedelic patterns.
Lauren recommends heading out in the sunshine to get your creative juices flowing.
Track Lauren down on Instagram at @lozzzgreen

Annie Wilson

At the age of two and after quickly discovering that crayons were in fact for drawing, rather than eating, Annie’s passion for illustration really kicked in.
Annie has a knack for finding the beauty in everyday items and is fascinated with the way colour can ignite memories and emotions. Full of nature and wonder, this particular collection of illustrations is sure to leave you feeling oh-so whimsical.
Get zen with Annie on Instagram at @anniewilson___

Clare Stoffels

Like most kids, Clare loved to draw and lucky for us she still does! Clare is one of the super creative Graphic Designer’s here at Typo; you’ll often see her wandering around the office with a pen, pencil or paintbrush in her hand. Clare is in her happy place when she is illustrating at home with a coffee in her hand and her dogs at her feet.
Intricate florals, littered with naive imperfections are Clare’s signature designs and are featured throughout the various alphabet designs in this edition of Between the Lines.
Unwind with Clare on Instagram at @clarestoffelsdesign

Melissa Nikolic

While most of us struggled to draw the humble stick figure as kids, Melissa was a regular little Picasso at a young age. She’s all grown up now and has turned her love of illustration into her very own business, Blackskyblue.
Melissa loves the beat of the street, so she’ll often hit the big smoke in search of cool street art. Symmetry, balance and repetition are all signature features in her illustrations, as well as the wacky cartoon characters she has created over the years.
