TRAINING TRAINING TRAINING
Train like you fight and fight like you train.  Use low light situations, use the RIGHT equipment.  Do this and you will not be scared.  Fear in your heart and a gun in your hand = Blood on the street.  Most cops fear the very worst.  And do not mistake me, it CAN happen.  But it also CAN be prevented.
The worst:

Don’t let it happen.  Train and equip and train more.

STOP SHOOTING FLEEING PERPS!
They are NO LONGER A THREAT!  Get some distance, return to your vehicle and call for assistance.  They can’t outrun a radio!  If they aren’t ARMED or if you DON’T know if they are, then wait.  You will get them. ESPECIALLY if you have your handy dandy camera turned ON and have their image.

Even though he’s armed, he clearly does not intend on shooting.  If YOU need 9 shots to hit ONCE when you are using both hands AND facing him, there’s no chance he’s gonna hit you.  Let him run it out, get out of flight mode and come to his senses.

PRESENCE!
In the armed forces we have a USE OF FORCE continuum.  It STARTS with PRESENCE and ENDS with deadly force.  As a non lethal weapons instructor and Anti Terrorism Security Training Supervisor, I always stressed PRESENCE as the most important levels of force because the best way to de escalate a situation is to prevent its occurrence in the first place.

This is used in police training as well.  But PRESENCE requires a professional and yes, sometimes intimidating look.  You must COMMAND respect with your presence not DEMAND respect.  Also, the lack of real protection on most officers is astonishing.  When you aren’t protected, you don’t FEEL vulnerable, when you FEEL vulnerable, you act edgy.  Finally, it’s hard to look hard when you are a jelly roll.  Tell me, who do you respect more?

Why take a “Shot in the Dark”?
Cops almost NEVER deploy a light because it requires another hand and they shoot with both.  A gun mounted light requires the gun to be drawn already and often is activated by placing your finger on the trigger.  Why not employ something like this:

Helmet $31
Light/Camera Combo $43
Saving a person’s life AND your soul by NOT shooting an unarmed person:
