“Kai on the Beach in Summer Village”

It’s done! I was very careful with painting his skin tone, since I knew from experience that painting a wide area of a medium-dark skin tone is hard to get right. To avoid inconsistency, splotchiness, or making the paint too caked-on, I made a larger mixture of burnt sienna and water than I normally would. I put undertones of a darker brown (I think it was some ultramarine mixed with the burnt sienna) for the shadows on his skin. I waited for that to dry before adding a layer of the burnt sienna water. Then I waited for that to dry and did another layer. A low concentration of burnt sienna tends to look orange, so it took 4 layers for his skin to have a natural bronze quality. Then I added a little more of the dark brown on top of the shadowed areas to make them more noticeable. His hair was pure ultramarine, aside from the black at the tips. I really hope I didn’t make his hair too dark to be able to see all the intricate line work I did for the strands of his hair! As usual, I was excited to add rose pink. The sash and tie of his swimsuit were pure rose pink. I feel like the gradient from black to rose pink on his horns didn’t go as seamlessly as it did in my previous picture of him, but it still looks perfectly fine. Of course, I couldn’t help but add the same rose pink to his lips and nipples. I knew ahead of time that I wanted to make those areas nice and luscious, so I added a dab of white gel pen to make them look like they shimmered in the sun. On that note, I could’ve used my metallic bronze paint to make his whole body shimmer in the sun!! Maybe next time.

I’m supposed to be making art to sell at a craft store at the moment, but I knew when I started this that it was going to be too sexually charged for me to deem it appropriate for such a place. That said, he’s still up for sale as a print here!

Oh, I used Japanese Watson paper and Chinese Marie’s Watercolors for this! And I am very proud of his eyes! I painted his irises with a soft purple gradient, and after they dried, I added a ring with white gel pen to achieve the ring of light around his pupils that he has in the game.

at a conference I attended recently, a researcher pointed to the difficulty of finding material in archives because so much depends on the metadata and the terminology used to describe things changes over time. "it would be so helpful," the researcher said, "if I typed 'lesbian' into the library of congress database, it would also show me results that were categorised in the 50s, when the materials were interpreted as 'intimate female friendships'"

which is what tag wrangles at Archive Of Our Own do incredibly effectively: searching for "omegaverse" also leads to "alpha/beta/omega dynamics" and "alternate universe: a/b/o" and so on. but ao3 achieves this frankly incredible categorisation and indexing system by the power of countless volunteers putting in hours and hours of unpaid and unthanked free time, and it's completely understandable that most archives do not have that kind of infrastructure, but also how incredible that a fan-run website has better searchability, classification, and accessibility than the library of congress
