Matsuri is scared of ghosts because she was kidnapped by one, Kurama became a shut-in because of the shame he felt after creating the tsunami, and Kai wears a mask because he鈥檚 half human/half oni and feels insecure about his mixed heritage as the god that reigns over the oni. They never directly state these are the reasons but I think these are reasonable conclusions to make considering we can all agree Fubuki is afraid of thunder because of his brother.
They may seem like comical quirks at first glance. They鈥檙e not, however, the more you look deeper.

Still loving Guardians, but I feel like there was a major missed opportunity involving Kaguya and Subaru. Spoilers below.
My Subaru was already in a romance with Kurama when the details of his relationship with Kaguya started coming to light. He keeps referring to her as his childhood friend, but we see in flashbacks that they are betrothed. We see Kaguya question whether they will renew the betrothal, and Subaru agrees to remain betrothed. They exchange keepsakes before parting ways on their quest to save Azuma. Most of their interactions are heavily romance-coded.
I feel like that's something that should be addressed if you're in a relationship, like as a special scene. I mean, I've always wondered what would happen in a RF game with a protagonist who already has a love interest before losing their memories. Whether it's played as their feelings changing or as them agreeing to the original betrothal because they didn't have feelings for anyone else in their home village, it's something that should be addressed!
Hell, Kaguya officiated Subaru and Kurama's wedding alongside Rin and was happy for them with no hint of her earlier feelings. Freaking Kai showed more angst about losing his not-boyfriend to someone else!
I'm not asking for a lot, but maybe an extra scene with your romantic partner where this gets talked out, as well as a scene with Kaguya/Subaru where things get aired out properly. I just felt like something was missing when it came to that plot thread.

Misc. Cuilang headcanons:
-Sometimes, you are the weird kid with access to scissors and the doll that ends up having a janky haircut forever. It has occurred to him several times over the decades that he could probably fix it, but he's reluctant to because he now fully understands that it does not grow back in his case. (Which is fine, I love his Lain hairstyle. <3)
-There's almost certainly Rune and/or Thunder crystals involved in making his mind and body go, so I like the idea that a very faint glow filters through his skin (or whatever one would call it) in a few places. It would only noticeable in extremely low light, but it's probably one of the main things he's hiding under his layers.
-One of the main things him and Woolby did to reduce his proneness to errors was possibly the implementation of the deactivation cycle, which allows his mind to consolidate information and repair itself, much like what sleep can do for the brain in biological organisms. And yes, I like to think this means he does eventually get to experience dreams!
-Oh man, he would be so fascinated by his dreams and obsessed with talking about them to anyone who would listen. Then he would discover that stupid "nobody wants to hear about someone else's dreams" concept, and feel so self-conscious and guilty for wasting everyone's time. But his friends and family would constantly reassure him that they love listening to him, especially because he was so private about any sort of inner life for so long.
-...Kai, of course, holds fast in the "ugh, don't ramble on about your dreams unless I was in them or you had sex with someone!" camp. He is soon made to regret ever saying this.

based off of Lanterns on the River by CopperPrawn on ao3. fic so beautiful it dragged me out of an art slump.
I'll save my thoughts on how much I loved Guardians of Azuma for another day. It was so well worth the wait, and now I'm even more excited for RF6 馃ゲ
