And this is where I start Book 1 and have a few moments of frowning at all the pathology stuff. I think there might be some differences in how things work in the UK vs the US for that field as far as training and work but in the US at least, if Verda was the only pathologist in the city he would almost certainly not be the medical examiner (ME), he would be working at the hospital. A town that never has murders wouldn't need an ME. A town with a hospital would need a pathologist to look at skin lesions, pap smears, anything removed during a surgery and to make cancer diagnoses etc. Though given the hospital size, most of that could probably couriered to the city and they might not even need a pathologist on site.
In the US, Wayhaven seems far more likely to have a coroner (elected official, doesn't always have to have a medical background) vs an ME (must be a board certified MD, usually forensic pathologist). Basically the "city boys" would have taken Janet's body with them because there wouldn't have been a qualified person in Wayhaven to do a forensic autopsy in a town that size, unless we assume the hospital has a pathologist willing to also do that but seems unlikely. You have to be willing to take on the responsibility and liability of the quality of the autopsy to hold up in a court of law and be prepared to back that up on the stand.
I love Verda as a character, it's just a weird thing I know too much about the details make me shake my head every time.
