FINAL PROJECT: "SAVE ME" an original work of art by Ashley Hild. This is a representation of my life as a child (small hand) and a representation of my adult life (my hands).... I have suffered horrific mental, emotional, psychological, verbal, sexual abuse, and rape continuously from the age of 5years old until 17 years old and this is my interpretation of that. I also experienced extreme poverty requiring me to get my first job at the age of 13 with a work permit, this would also be the first I was so desperate for food, I ate out if a trash can. My mother is and was a horrible person, I told her of these situations and she did absolutely nothing to help me or protect me. She actually stayed married to the last man who molested me for 20 years. She sat me down on her bed after I called the police and looked me directly in the eyes and said "you deserve whatever happened to you", She has always chosen men over me. Unfortunately I had to move back in with her during the second week of May 2019 after my stay in a psychiatric hospital. It was my only option or live in a homeless shelter. This was absolutely not part of my life's path. Prior to May 2019, I hadn't spoken to or seen my mom in 13 years, at all, I had to choose myself over her. All of the blue gems seen falling are the tears I've shed over my lifetime enough to fill the ocean represents by the blue tulle at the bottom of the canvas.

Virtual Sketch Book #3
ASSIGNMENT FOR VIRTUAL SKETCH BOOK 3 2/2020
Due 3/18/20 at 11:59pm
Visual Analysis
(at The Ringling Museum of Art or in front of a physical work of art in the “real world”)
On your trip to see art in its natural habitat (http://ringling.org/ (Links to an external site.) This is the BEST local place to see an unbelievable variety of art for FREE), I ask you to pick one piece of art to observe in detail. Keep in mind that you will be completing research on this piece of art and will be spending a good amount of time looking at it and thinking about it. You will need to include some type of reproduction of the image with your final assignment, along with the title, date, artist and media. (My advice: it might be wise to pick a back-up to your first choice in case your research proves too frustrating). Remember…there will be more information available on the more “famous” or well-known pieces. These are usually featured prominently and are highlighted on the tours.
You need to include “proof” of your visit to The Ringling. A selfie, a picture of your wristband or any concrete proof of your visit will be submitted with your work.
Essentially, what you will be completing is a visual analysis of your chosen piece of art. I have included an outline to help you get started. (This is only a suggestion, feel free to use your imagination to respond to the art.) Your final, polished written assignment, in paragraph form, should be between 300-450 words. Don’t rely heavily on someone else’s quotations, those don’t count for your word count.
You must submit this work to me as a text block or as a doc in Canvas AND post it to your Tumblr.*
How does this whole thing work?
WRITING AND LOOKING – our senses emotions and memory will come together with knowledge.
How will you communicate with WORDS what you SEE and FEEL?
DESCRIBE PHYSICAL QUALITIES (THE FACTS)
What is it made of?
How big is it?
(Include details as if you were using words to help a blind person “see” it.)
What colors and shapes are used?
What subjects (if any) are represented?
How was the work designed?
Is it balanced?
What is emphasized? Rhythm? Proportion?
Contrast? Does it have unity and variety?
THIS PART IS ALL ABOUT YOU:
How does the work make you feel?
How or why does it evoke these feelings?
NOW RESEARCH:
Inform yourself about the cultural background of the object and the artist.
Use the databases for art at the library. There is always someone at the library that can help you, and usually there is a librarian available to chat online. You can also log into the databases from home (if you have internet access), once you know what you are doing. (Be careful of your sources, especially on the internet.) A simple “Google” search and “Wikipedia” research will not be sufficient for this assignment.
Beginning with Google or Wikipedia is fine (type in the name of the artist/architect/designer to start), but should not be used for the bulk of this paper. Wikipedia is footnoted, so scroll to the bottom of the page for links to primary sources.
Now you have some basic information on the person. Keep in mind this paper is about the work, not the person that made it.
THINKING:
What movement is the art work associated with?
Example: If it’s from the Renaissance, who commissioned it? If it’s a portrait, who is the subject?
What does the artwork say about the artist that made it?
Can you tell what the artist was trying to say?
How clearly does the artist get their message across?
THE LAST (most important) PART:
Use what you learn in your research and by looking closely at the artwork to form your own critique of the work (your informed opinion) based partly on the FACTS. Make sure you think about and answer this in your conclusion: based on your research, and everything you have learned so far about art and artists, what is the importance of this work of art to society and/or the world. Be specific. Why did YOU pick it?
With your Tumblr post, you must attach a picture of you at the Ringling Museum, or plainly in front of the art work that you chose in another location. The picture is PROOF of your journey, so make sure it is clear.
SPECIAL TIPS: When referring to the artist that created the work that you are examining, use his/her full name first, then shift to last name. Example:
Georgia O’Keeffe is associated with the American Southwest, where she found artistic inspiration, and particularly New Mexico, where she settled late in life. O’Keeffe has been a major figure in American art since the 1920s.
Titles of works of art should be italicized (exception is architecture).
*The paper is to be submitted through the CANVAS drop-box and will be processed through “Turnitin,” which is an internet-based plagiarism detection service. Papers will not be accepted without completion of this process.

Vik Muniz- Using Media Creatively: 2/21/2020
Title: Horse (Monads Series) 2003
Media: Plastic Toy Soldiers, Indians, and Cowboys on Canvas
Dimensions: 50 1/4 X 40 inches
1.) “You're subject to a series of little distractions and you try to reconcile and negotiate this tension between the detail and the totality of the image”.
Response: When Vik Muniz makes this statement, I full understand his intended meaning. This work of art must contain a couple thousand plastic toy Soldiers, Cowboys, and Indians. The detail of each and everyone of their placement is critical to the overall totality of the image and its meaning, but I can imagine it’s easy to become consumed working on one specific area of the image. I’m sure Vik must have had to take several brakes to refocus on the overall image he was trying to create.
2.) “I find this ambiguity very interesting”.
Response: Ambiguity - The quality of being open to more than one interpretation; inexactness.
Several of Vik Muniz’s works of art can be interpreted many different ways. I believe if twenty people, one person at a time viewed Vik Muniz’s rendition of Van Gogh’s Starry Night, they would all identify the overall image, but with an up-close look, each of them would identify a different object that the previous viewer missed and have a completely different interpretation of what the item means to them and how it has meaning/relevance to the overall image.
3.) Think about what his art is made of.
Response: Plastic Toy Solders, Cowboys, and Indians
My interpretation of Vik Muniz’ s “Horse” (Monads Series) 2003....
As I look at the “Horse” at a normal distance it’s very clear to me that the work of art is meant to be a horse wearing a bridle with reins attached. Now, that I take a up-close and personal look at the “Horse”, I can see that it’s made of probably a couple thousand plastic toy Solders, Cowboys, and Indians. As I take the time to analyze the entire work of art I’ve developed some thoughts and feelings of what the “Horse” means to me. I’ve come to see that the Solders, Cowboys, and Indians are arranged in different battle sense. Some of them are depicted as dead or at war with one another. The several ways in which the Solders, Cowboys, and Indians are arranged remind me of the wars that have occurred her in the United States. The “Horse” to me is a statement of power, transportation, and aerial advantage that was provided to these men during these times of war.

Virtual Sketchbook 2: PHOTOGRAPHY Group # 3 2/14/2020
Portraiture : The Reveal (06/13/2012)
Who is it?
Sodanie Chea (Self Portrait)
What does this picture hope to tell us about the person?
(My personal interpretation) Although, the first glimpse we get of Sodanie we notice that she is a beautiful young woman, but she wears a mask. Many of us wear masks everyday to hide the things that make us vulnerable to everyone around us. I wear my mask too and I have for so long, from the early age of 5 years old and even currently at the age of 36 years old. I hide many things behind my mask for fear of judgement, being treated differently, or shunned because others don’t understand or care to try. Some of the things I hide behind my mask are as follows: early childhood trauma, extreme poverty, extensive mental illnesses, a rare lifelong incureable neurological disorder (Severe Narcolepsy with Cataplexy), an abusive parent, I ran away when I was 16 years old (to escape my abusive parent) and came back out of desperation at 20 years old, oppression, discrimination, and so many more things than I have time or energy to talk about. So, what I take from this portrait, as a moral lesson is lead with kindness, understanding, and a willingness to learn because you never know what is hidden behind a persons mask.
Landscape :
Mike Putnam - Oregon Alpine Meadow Serpentine Stream
Still Life :
Margarita K. - Spring Story
What is it? It’s fresh cut spring flowers laying in a book on a table.
Why include this stuff? I feel the artist (Photographer) is trying to send a profound statement.
What is the message?
The flowers represent life. The book represents death. the flowers start as a seed and work very hard to grow and push their way through the earth. they grow and grow over the days, bigger, stronger, and more beautiful. As the book closes (death occurs) the flowers become a dried and wilted memory of the of the past.

VITURAL SKETCHBOOK #2
JOURNALING – Make a visual outline of all the Principles of Design (Chapter 4) and define each one, interpreting the text’s definition of each one in your own words, so you fully understand it. Identify where you see examples of these principles in your everyday life or identify how an artist uses each element and principle by posting an example of an art form or drawing an example that uses that Principle next to the definition. (7 examples TOTAL). Key Principle of Design: Unity and Variety This photograph is of my mother’s mezuzahs, from my perspective, they’re a representation of Unity and Variety. I believe they depict Unity because they’re all the same religious symbols. They also represent Variety because although they’re they same religious symbol, each of them is different in their own special way.

Key Principal of Design: Balance This is a photograph of a custom made stain-glass piece, from my perspective this is a representation of Symmetrical Balance. In the Jewish culture the candle can represent life and death. The candles on the left represent life, as they are positioned in an up-ward way, the candles on the left represent death, as they are positioned in a down-ward manner. Both sides Balance each other, their only positioned differently, changing their meaning drastically.

Key Principals of Design: Emphasis and Subordination Watson and the Shark 1788. The medium is oil on canvas. It is (71 11/16 X 90 7/16 inches). Painted by John Singleton Copley. This painting is a great representation of Emphasis and Subordination. The Emphasis is on 14 year old Brook Watson, who has had his leg viciously severed by a shark attack, the men in the boat are trying to fight off the shark with spears, so that they may rescue Brook Watson. The Subordination is represented by the ships, buildings, and clouds in the background. These objects are in the painting mainly as fillers and are not the focus of the painting.

Key Principal of Design: Directional Forces This image is a great example of Directional Forces, your eyes automatically follow the swirling motion of the image, whether you choose to focus on the bold swirl or the lines within the swirl, your eyes are forced from the outer most edge into the center.
Key Principles of Design: Contrast This picture of my sister (far left) was taken at the Fire Academy, during a night time training exercise. The bright flames against the dark of night provide the perfect contrast in this photograph. The bright flames also accent the silhouettes of the Fire Fighters.

Key Principles of Design: Repetition and Rhythm This quilt made by my mother, from my perspective, is a great example of Repetition and Rhythm. The Repetition is expressed through the repeated shapes and patterns. Rhythm refers to any type of movement, from my perspective, the way the quilt lays on the table, gives the effect that the blue background is running downward like a waterfall, the designs within the white patches also adds to this effect.

Key Principles of Design: Scale and Proportion This sculpture is known as SpoonBridge and Cherry. The medium is stainless steel and aluminum painted with polyurethane enamel. Its 29 ft. 6 in. X 51 ft. 6 in. X 13 ft. 6 in. The sculpture was crafted by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje vam Bruggen in 1988. The Scale and Proportion of the spoon and cherry are very exaggerated, compared to the accurate size of a normal spoon and cherry. As if a giant child has dropped their desert spoon, I find it quite funny, which I’ m sure was the artist’s intention.

2. WRITING AND LOOKING – Just as a good cook assembles the perfect ingredients for a delicious recipe, an artist assembles the right elements for a successful artwork. Choose any artwork from your textbook and make a recipe of the composition. For example, Velásquez’s artwork, Las Meninas (figure 17.21, page 295) contains implied lines, linear perspective, a distinct vanishing point, neutral colors, highlights, focal points described by geometric shapes (triangles and rectangles) and achieves balance through placement of figures and rhythm between foreground and background etc. Make sure to include the title of your choice with the figure and page number. Don’t use my example.
I have chosen sculpture Shuttlecocks (one of four) 1994. Produced by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen (figure 4.18, page 81). This sculpture contains emphasis and subordination, directional forces, scale and proportion, contrasting color, implied lines, focal point, unity (this is one of four), and balance (this is one of four).

3. CONNECTING ART TO YOUR WORLD – Share a personal experience of how color has affected you (one paragraph). Make sure to use some of your new vocabulary (hue, value, intensity, saturation). If you had to pick a “color scheme” for your life, what would it be?
I'm having an extremely difficult time with this question, so I would to describe how each color makes me feel psychologically.
Green and different hues of green make me feel in touch with nature and life.
Yellow makes me feel a bit of happiness.
Light blue makes me feel mentally light and free.
Dark blue makes me feel even more depressed than I am usually.
Red makes me feel angry, I rarely have feelings of love when I see the color red.
Pink makes me feel calm and serene.
Gray makes me feel wise, 95% of my hair at the age of 35 is gray, funny but true.
Black makes me feel at home mentally, it's the predominate color I wear.
Orange makes me feel anxious and panic, I don't particularly care for Orange.
Purple makes me feel relaxed and calm.
Brown for some reason unknown to my self makes me feel sad.
White makes me feel stressed, I believe its because it's the absence of color, other times I associate the color white with cleanliness and spiritual freedom.
If I could choose a color palate for my life it would be Black and Grey. I feel Black gives other people the feeling of sadness and depression. For me personally it's the colors that mentality appeal to me the most, so in an essence when I wear these colors I can non verbally express my feels to others, because of their own perception of the color Black. I also feel that my Severe Major Depressive Disorder plays a part in why I feel so comfortable with the color Black.

4. ART PROJECT – ARTIST’S CHOICE - Draw a cartoon or make a painting. The form: If you choose the cartoon (comic) it must be at least 3 panels. The size is not important. The painting can be executed with any of the materials (media) outlined in your textbook (see Chapters 6 and 7) and note that painting involves the use of WET media, drawing usually refers to dry media – I want to see PAINTING if you choose to make a painting, DRAWING is NOT the same thing). The content: The subject matter should be something that you are passionate about – something that has a deep personal meaning for you. The comic or the painting should be able to tell some type of story that relates your feelings about your chosen subject matter. Post pics of the finished product (in-process photos are also interesting!).
This cartoon I drew is currently how I feel about my life. I continue to give and give to make others happy and everytime I do, I lose a piece of myself, yet I continue to give myself freely for the happiness of others.... until I have nothing left.

5. PHOTO/DESIGN - This will be a graded Group Discussion that will also be due 11:59p on 2/10. Find it here: Photography/Film/Digital/Design

1. WRITING AND RESEARCH –
THIS part of the assignment is a class discussion – deadline January 10, 2020 11:59pm.
Discussion: Introductions/First Artworks/Official Registration Attendance for the Course MUST POST HERE
The art work I was assigned was number 26. The title of my assigned work of art is Self-Portrait, 1980 by Alice Neel; Oil on Canvas; 54" x 40".
1. Hello fellow Artists! My name is Ashley Hild and one known fact about me is that I have Severe Narcolepsy with Cataplexy, if anyone is unsure what exactly this lifelong Neurological Disorder is I'd be happy to explain. It's definitely not what is depicted on television or in movies.
Narcolepsy : Medical Condition
Persistent neurological disease that includes a diminished capacity to control sleep wake cycles.
Very rare (Fewer than 20,000 cases per year in US)
Often requires lab test or imaging
Treatments can help manage condition, no known cure
Can be lifelong Cause of narcolepsy is unknown. Primary symptom is excessive day time sleepiness. Medications and lifestyle modifications help to manage the symptoms. Symptoms : Excessive daytime sleepiness - People with the sickness sleep off without any sign at anyplace and whenever Diminished alertness for the duration of the day Hard to focus and completely work Sudden loss of muscle tone called as Cataplexy Sleep paralysis - Experience an inability to move or talk while falling asleep or after waking Hallucinations - Semi- alert, start envisioning and experience the fantasies as reality Treatments: Treatment helps to control symptoms and prevent attacks. Medication: Stimulants: Drugs that provoke the central nervous system to help individuals to remain wakeful during the day time. Modafinil · Armodafinil Serotonin reuptake inhibitors: Suppress REM sleep, to help ease the indications of cataplexy, hallucinations and sleep paralysis. Fluoxetine Tricyclic antidepressants: Drugs used to treat depression. Protriptyline Central nervous system depressant: It is highly effective for treating cataplexy. Sodium oxybate Causes: The exact cause for sickness is still unknown There might be many causes. Most people suffering with this condition have low levels of hypocretin (also known as orexin) Hypocretin levels are especially low in the individuals who encounter cataplexy At times, hereditary qualities may assume a part of cause for narcolepsy People also search for: Cataplexy Sleep Paralysis Sleep Apnea Sleep Disorders Insomnia See more: Data from Focus Medica. 2. ART AND WRITING - Select a work of art from your life. It must be something that hangs in your house or your room, something that is important to you or that you look at everyday. Include a picture. In paragraph form (4 sentences), tell me about the art – what media were used to create it? What use does it serve? Do you think it is beautiful? Why?
This work of art hangs on my living room wall, above a large lounge chair. I purchaced it from IKEA in Tampa, Florida. This photograph is called Tampa Skyline. It is 55″x39″, printed on hard poster board, in a brushed nickel frame. The artist is Bavry Howe/Corbis/POLFOTO. Printing Licence: Art Development, Denmark. Printed in EU for IKEA. It serves as fond reminder of happy memories for me, of the wonderful city I grew up in. It reminds me of my childhood, attending Hillsborough High School, learning to drive, working and getting tattooed in Ybor City, and all the diverse people I encountered while living there. Yes, I absolutely do feel this photograph is beautiful. It shows how incredible the Skyscrapers of Downtown Tampa really are. From my perspective, this photography actually captures exactly how magnificent Downtown Tampa looks from afar. The reflection of the Skyscrapers add depth, the setting sun gives off a magical glow on the horizon, and the shadows cast by the building accents their massive scale.

3. WRITING A SELF-PORTRAIT - Create a perceptual profile. What “baggage” are you bringing along when you look at art? Answer the following questions – How old are you? What is the gender you primarily align with? Where are you from? What is your ethnicity? What do you do for fun? Are you a member of any organized group? Where do you work? What makes you uniquely you? This helps us see from what exact point in the world we view and receive visual information.
I identify as a lesbian woman. I am 35 years old, I was born January 14th 1984, in Tacoma, Washington at the Military Hospital on base. My mother and father were both in the Army, my mother found out she was pregnant with me while they were both stationed in Germany. I grew up in Tampa, Florida. I am Caucasian and my mother raised me in the Jewish faith. I really enjoy cruising, in my opinion it’s one of the best ways to vacation, I typically cruise twice a year. I have been an associate at Publix Supermarkets since 2009. I feel that my wide range of life experience, the ability to persevere in the face of adversity, and my brutal honesty makes me unique in my own special way.
4. ART PROJECT (SELF-PORTRAIT) – Look at the work of Romare Bearden in your textbook (pg. 5-6, figs. 1.3-1.5). He created collages that combine media (gouache, pencil, colored pencil) and photographs to express things from his life that he thought people could universally relate to. He was representing himself powerfully long before the advent of selfies.
What are you fascinated by in your daily life? Create a self-portrait that somehow represents YOU. This could be a selfie (remember this is ART - your representation should encompass the definition as introduced in our text, and this is a graded assignment), a virtual collage, anything you assemble that communicates something to the viewer. But don’t let me (or anyone else) limit you – be as creative as you desire!
This is a picture of my sister (left) and myself (right), on my wedding day. This picture to me represents unconditional love, support, and the strongest relationship of my life. Although this was one of the most happiest days of my life, it was also the saddest. Neither one of my parents were invited to my wedding for personal reasons, so I walked down the aisle alone. As hard as this was for me with tears in my eyes, I knew I could make it through it with my sisters support.

DEADLINE: VIRTUAL SKETCHBOOK section 1 (everything listed on this sheet – even number 1 – COPY AND PASTE IT) is due at 11:59PM – JANUARY 17, 2020.

The art work I was assigned was number 26. The title of my assigned work of art is Self-Portrait, 1980 by Alice Neel; Oil on Canvas; 54" x 40".
1. Alice Hartley Neel was born on January 28th, 1900 in Gladwyne, Pennsylvania. Alice died October 13th, 1984 at the age of 84, in New York City, New York.
2. Alice Neel was an American realist painter celebrated for her honest and expressive portraits, produced at a time when Abstract Expressionism was the prevailing style in American painting.
3. In 1930, after the death of one of her children and her husband fleeing to Cuba with their surviving child, Neel suffered a nervous breakdown. At risk for suicide, she spent nearly a year in a mental hospital. Her paintings which served as an emotional outlet for the traumatic nature of her life, depicted destitute mothers, children, and fellow psychiatric patients, all were portrayed in a distorted Expressionist style. With the help of her art, Neel gradually healed and was released in 1931.
4. Neel had her first solo exhibition in New York City in 1938.
5. The subjects in many of Neel's works were nude; their vulnerability contributed to the depth of the realistic and often unforgiving portraits. Neel's nude self-portrait made at the age of 81 (1980) became one of her best-known works of art.

My perspective on Self-Portrait 1980 by Alice Neel hasn't changed since I first viewed this work of art. I felt that this painting showed the cold hard truth of aging, femininity, the strength of a woman in her purest form, and vulnerability. Neel's nudity and extreme detail, was a bit shocking to me when I realized this was my assigned work of art, but I have a great appreciation for this painting after spending quite a bit of time examining it. I noticed that Neel is holding a paint brush in her self portrait, which was appropriate considering painting was her passion.
