Instead of making a New Years Resolution I made a list of things I wanted to accomplish this year. This is my account of how I am doing completing my list.

So, the summer is half over and I never completed last year’s list!!! However, I had a blast trying to work on it! I’ve decided to keep making lists of things to do however, maybe make them more do-able and not be so hard on my self if I don’t complete everything on the list! The point of the list was to make more time for the things I enjoy, so that’s what I’m going to do!

 Necronomicon
Thanks to my new Audible app I was able to listen to The Necronomicon by H.P. Lovecraft recently. I was thrilled to finally be able to check out this literary classic and discover the horrors of the cthulhu myself. The following is my thoughts and feelings on the book with as few spoilers as possible, however just in case I am warning you now that I may unintentionally spoil one or two things from the collection.
Lovecraft has a very distinctive style and within the first three stories I was able to pick up a clear pattern to his works. With most of his stories he seems to have one character who had something so outrageous happen to them that at first they do not believe it themselves. This character is usually on the brink of death, insanity, or that has left a transcript of the story after they could no longer tell the tale themselves. This character will deny all signs pointing to danger to the point where the reader will want to shake the character for being an idiot until the character has no choice but to accept that they are in serious trouble. Then right when the most action filled moment of the story is about to happen the character in question will usually pass out or step back from the story to tell the reader how unbelievable everything really is that has happened.
Despite how predictable this pattern was within each of these stories, the sheer amount of detail used to comprise the imagery within the collection made the stories compelling and gruesome. I found myself listening to the creaking sounds of my floorboards at night and wondering if I was going to be taken away be creatures unknown. I was filled with dread and wonder at ideas from Lovecraft and commonalities that wove between his stories.
I did find it disturbing that he seemed to throw such negativity on African Americans and that his stories held such a male focus. I suppose that for the time he was writing in this would have been the norm, but I would have liked to have seen more stories with stronger female roles and less disparaging comments throughout this stories to those non-white characters.
Regardless of its flaws the Necronomicon was a classic science fiction horror that hit all the right spots to scare and delight. With several different options of varying lengths there is bound to be a story in this cursed tome to please any reader of the macabre.
