DON'T REPOST MY ART
A fairly old drawing of Allura from Voltron. I watched all seasons but the last one because I heard it was bad and I didn't want to ruin the series for myself.

All that too^^^^
Srsly, thanks you guys for adding this stellar commentary! Allura has almost no defenders and it bugs me tf out. Glad to see some others defending her and add ingmore nuanced points to just how hard the narrative fucking shat on her, which of course means the ppl behind it.
Side note: I was never trying to let JDS off the hook here. I was just citing LM specifically because it was her who hand-waved with the lazy âfEmIniSt ChOiCeâ excuse in that one garbage fire interview. Iâm no fan of either of these ppl, but at the end of the day, tbh itâs JDS who has even more of my scorn.
LM saying Alluraâs sacrifice was âfeministâ because she made the choice to sacrifice herself p much exemplifies the problem I have with the latest trend in feminism where something, an act or decision, is automatically feminist as long as itâs something a woman chooses.
Albeit in this particular example, LM is probably just being lazy and using it as a way to defend herself as a white writer who signed off on stuffing a WoC in the fridge. But I feel like sheâs falling back on the âfeministâ defense in the first place because of the way the wider movement has idealized the concept of choice.
Obviously choice is important in feminism, Iâm not saying itâs not. But just because something is a choice made by a woman doesnât automatically make it feminist. I make the choice to wear makeup and dressy feminine clothes to work. I make this choice and it is not a bad choice, there is nothing wrong with this choice. But it is not a feminist choice, because in doing so, I still conform to the standards of femininity placed upon women by patriarchy.
Or, my life is boring, so letâs take the example of a far less boring pink cat. Princess Carolyn in BJHM s5 tries to justify defending Vance Wagner (sp?) as actually being âfeministâ because in doing so, she was prioritizing the reputation of her own career and the career choice she made in hiring him. Of course it was understandable where she was coming from, but it still wasnât feminist of her to hire nor defend a blatant misogynist, racist, and abuser.Â
I donât want to remove the concept of choice from the feminist movement, but I think the approach to it should change. I donât like the idea that every single choice a woman makes is automatically a feminist one simply on the basis of it being a choice. And I donât like choice being the fallback excuse for lazy people like LM, who think they can use it to get around addressing the harmful tropes and implications depicted in their work.

these fans have the same rotating hot take on the altean colony problem (âhe didnât actually do itâ->âhe was trying to save their livesâ->âthey were sacrificed for the greater goodâ->âletâs not talk about those lab ratsâ) and in all the disk horse no one wants to talk about how shady it is that lotor needed all that fucking quintessence while claiming the empire would stop fighting if it just had more quintessence
to do WHAT?
⌠even back in s3 I was like âwhat the fuckâ at that line bc itâs not as if actual real historical empires havenât tried to justify their continued existence by whining about the need for resourcesâÂ
so either 1. lotor needs the quintessence so he can run galra empire 2.0, greener and better PR, but fundamentally still exploitative, which means the show is driving viewers to accept the inevitability of empire and white supremacy OR 2. lotor needs the quintessence to fulfil his goal of creating an altean empire, a possibility hinted by âhole in the skyâ and empress allura + his later admission that he wants to kill the galra, which means the show was going to devote considerable effort to pushing a âgenocide survivors and their descendants can be Just As Bad as the original genocide perpetratorsâ message which vld had NO BUSINESS DOING when it couldnât even find the energy to give allura any respect or respite as the lead female protagonist who lost her people and her world to the original genocide.
the ONLY WAY out of this madness was to have vld reject empire altogether. and the best, most positive, redeeming arc for lotor would have been to come to that realisation and help allura and team voltron to take down the empire.
but vld didnât do that. didnât even dismantle the empire after the fucking war.Â
but we got clowns in fandom talking about how allura and the paladins are WaR cRiMiNaLs fOr DaRiNg tO dEsTaBiLiSe tHe eMpIrE⌠sit the fuck down and think about what it means to protest someone trying to destabilise an empire you oblivious shits.
(I know most of them are americans but thatâs no excuse.)
anyway the galra were strongly white-coded and you could actually make the case that lotorâs storyline is doomed to shit bc his momâs a Crazy Brown BitchâŚâŚ
bc itâs consistent with the deep level racist fuckery vld actually presented but a lot of the stans donât get that at all and worse donât want to talk about haggar/honerva as anything more than the evil abuser mom⌠u try to talk about the fact that honerva is canonically a genocide survivor and woc and vld NEEDED to come to terms with what that means but nah âzomg you think women canât be villains??â only⌠they even have ready excuses for zarkon as being supposedly more redeemableâŚ
and remember that the reveal about the colony alteans is basically only used as a way to punish allura for having trusted someone with galra heritage long enough to fall for himâ silly girlâ and insidiously to explain why she isnât fit to lead voltron or the coalition, its actual political ramifications are buried in the text, and the audience is meant to hate lotor only whenâ the moment whenâ he says he wants to end the galra.
thatâs how obvious the showâs galra bias is and youâre all convinced theyâre poor misunderstood babies plagued by poverty (??!) and being oppressed by the survivors of a people they literally wiped out.
vld uses fantasy race and worldbuilding to get us to hate actual poc; uses reverse racist tropes to vilify the darker skinned protagonists; teaches us that the ambitious moc no matter how hard they work are always innately inferior to the white man; has no sympathetic option for biracial ppl who identify more with, or try to identify with, their non-white heritage; spent seasons reducing a disabled gay asian protagonist to model minority plot device for the white lead and as designated whipping boy; psychologically tortured and belittled its black female lead from almost day 1, encouraged fans to suspect her motives, pitted her against the always more sympathetic white guy, demoted her and validated all her self-doubt, and finally fridged her.
and thatâs still not enough, we still gotta read cancerous stupidity like that? this fandom really is cursed.

hey remember when the voltron crew uploaded this picture and then went on to exploit marginalized trauma and call it âdiversity and representationâ? that was kind of fucked up.
