when i first heard about tgcf i thought it would be a cliche romance between like moral xl who sees the good in hc even though hc has done evil things and like it would be like a bad boy/good girl dynamic. but then xl nearly wiped out an entire country out of anger and the worst thing that hc has done has been like. challenging gods to a fair duel x.x

god i love reading about stupid drama in ancient greece. like there was an athlete named theagenes who was so good at every kind of athletic contest that when he died, one of his opponents would go to beat the shit out of a statue of him out of spite, but then one day the statue fell on the guy and killed him so the greeks took the statue to court for murder, convicted it, and threw it into the sea

THIS IS NOT A DRILL
I REPEAT
THIS IS NOT A DRILL
THE STRICTLY NO HEROICS (Feiwel & Friends, Macmillan Children’s, 2023) COVER JUST DROPPED!
Tumblr media
If you’re a powerless normie in a world run by superheroes, you need three rules to survive:
1: Keep your head down
2: Don’t make enemies
3: STRICTLY NO HEROICS
When a hero gropes her best friend, Riley Jones breaks all of them.
Her attempt at serving justice gets her fired from her summer job. Luckily, Sunnylake City’s biggest business is booming (literally, when there’s C4 involved).
Every villain wants henchmen: masked cronies who take their coffee orders, vacuum their secret lairs, and posture in the background while they fight. The HENCH agency provides a steady stream of drop-outs and losers who are willing to get beaten up by sidekicks for minimum wage.
Riley might just be the perfect candidate.
I’ve worked so hard on this project, with an incredible team of people. And we’re getting closer to that sweet, sweet pub date!
Any boosts would be greatly appreciated <3 Let’s give my debut some love?

I swear to God if I read one more hot-take or off-handed remark in an Our Flag Means Death media article about "Stede was really probably Blackbeard's prisoner", I'm going to start screaming.
You want to know how much hard evidence "prisoner theory" has? As much evidence as "Our Flag Means Death is perfectly historically accurate".
Stede Bonnet and Blackbeard were traveling in each other's company about 80% of Stede's measly 16-18 months as a pirate. Either on the same ship or sailing their ships together.
As a general rule, pirates didn't keep prisoners. Prisoners eat rations and take up space that pirate ships don't have. They might press a man into service if they captured someone with a skill they needed (doctor, carpenter, etc.). They might hold hostages for ransom in the short term. The longest hostage taking of Blackbeard that we know about is about 8 days and the prisoners were treated well. And allowed to live past multiple deadlines in a comedy of errors that I hope OFMD does at some point. (The blockade and ransom of Charles Town, South Carolina is bananas. And of note, the pirates didn't want money in this exchange, just medicine.)
Skillwise, Stede was bloody useless. He could read. That's it. The library aboard ship is true! And evidence says Blackbeard could read and write, so he didn't need him for that. Stede couldn't sail. He wasn't a very good captain on his own.
Stede was an orphan by the time he set sail and there's no way his wife was going to pay to get him back. Blackbeard did take over Stede's ship for a while when Stede was injured, but he gave it back!! Then they sailed their ships together.
The second time Blackbeard took over Stede's ship, Stede had just messed up and his crew got mutinous. Blackbeard put his quartermaster in charge of Stede's ship and brought Stede over to his ship (by this point he was sailing the Queen Anne's Revenge). He kept him as a "guest of the captain".
For some reason, Blackbeard wanted Stede around. He could have dropped him off at any port. He could have killed him. He could have let Stede's crew kill him. He didn't. He let this rich weirdo live out his pirate fantasies aboard his ship. That's not a prisoner.
Multiple media articles insisting on couching the relationship between Stede and Blackbeard "as probably a prisoner" ignores the facts of the case. It really reads as a "just to be clear, we don't think the pirates were gay" disclaimer and it's as homophobic as it is inaccurate.
I don't know what relationship Stede Bonnet and Edward "Blackbeard" Teach had. No one wrote down anything definitive at the time. But logic points away from the "prisoner" narrative.

Gotta love how Jim constantly acts like they’re from a completely different show. Like, they’re an orphan who was raised to be a killing machine by a nun so that they could kill the men who killed their family, and all of the scenes regarding this are super dramatic, but then literally any other character will show up and it’s like “oh yeah I’m watching a comedy”
