The Sega Saturn. 32bit powerhouse machine stuffed full of magic and compromise. Intended as the best 2D gaming platform ever, Sony’s Playstation scared the crap out of Sega and they added additional hardware at the last minute. Internally it was a mess, Sega’s best programming tools weren’t given to other developers, and despite huge popularity in Japan, it was a machine for the hardcore everywhere else.

The Samsung Saturn was a Japan-region Saturn. The only difference is the missing Japanese language option (in -some- systems, not all). Korea doesn’t like Japan, but they sure did want a piece of the gaming pie. This unit is rare, possibly rarer than the last image…

The fourth one, the HiSaturn Navi, was the only Saturn machine to deviate from the standard specs. Smaller, flatter, clip-on screen, audio controls, karaoke features, GPS software and a 12-volt power adaptor so it could be used in cars. It was probably the worst navi system ever, but it’s unquestionably beautiful. A real product of the 90s, the tail end of Japan’s bubble prosperity where anything goes.
