I've been reading recently...

N.K. Jemisin's The Fifth Season was the January choice for my Science Fiction/Fantasy book club.

I adored the storytelling technique here, switching between different eras and experiences. Damaya, Syenite, and and Essun are female orogenes, individuals who have the ability to control energy, especially that which belongs to the earth. Because of this fearsome power, orogenes are enslaved and controlled by the government. Most of the populace finds them frightening.

The setting and environment are robustly rendered, and the story is populated with memorable characters. I am a HUGE Alabaster fan, while a pirate named Innon exudes immensity both in size and personality.

The Fifth Season is a lush, ambitious tale. I warmly recommend it to fans of speculative or even literary fiction.
