500 Days of Summer Review
This is a quick one, not much to say without being really redundant. I went into this movie knowing pretty much nothing about this movie besides that it’s a romantic comedy. Coming out of it though, I can honestly say this movie is fantastic. The movie is told through the usage of days. For example, the movie starts on one day, then moves to another day, then back to a different day. During this the audience gets to see their relationship as it unfolds while seeing Tom as he’s miserable post breakup. It’s so great because of the juxtaposition of emotions. So amazing. Everything about how the movie was filmed is great. From the minor animated parts to the presentation of how Tom’s expecting an event to play out to how it actually plays out, everything was just so well done. So much emotion goes into the movie and it’s just absolutely wonderful. At times you’re just so happy for Tom and then others you really feel as depressed as he does. I can’t recommend this movie enough, it’s great.

The first picture is one of the first things we saw when we got to the convention today. An artist known as Eric Michael Maruscak is recreating an Avengers cover out in the convention center lobby. Despite the source material not belonging to Maruscak, I still find his artistic ability impressive. This picture was taken at the end of the day and his ETA for completion is early Sunday morning. I'm hoping to have more pictures of this work in progress. Check his site out here. The second picture is of former wrestling superstar Jackie Gayda-Haas. I helped her hang a sign at her Custom Muscle booth without realizing who she was. Honestly, I thought she was just an attractive girl that a company hired (ya know, a booth babe). Then after talking to her for a few minutes I realized that she was one of the celebrity guests for comic con this year. Hands down she seems to be a genuinely nice person. I talked with her several times throughout the day and each time she was warm and pleasant where as after two minutes with other celebrities I could tell they were ready for people to pass. Check out her site at here. The third picture is a guy dressed as Pedobear. I'm planning on following him around taking pictures of him in awesome (read:awkward) places tomorrow. We'll see how well that plan works out. I got a few epic pictures taken with him and another picture of him and a random scared child. The last picture is a cosplayer we made friends with while watching a Super Smash Brothers Brawl tournament. She made her own costume and it was her first sewing project. Impressive if you ask me. I think she's a digimon of some sort, but I really have no idea. Her friends ran a Brawl website and compete in tournaments a lot. I'd link to their site but I can't find it. Day one of Comic Con was pretty interesting. I enjoyed it and am looking forward to what the rest of the weekend brings.

Review of GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra
I’ll be the first to admit that GI Joe isn’t exactly my area of expertise. Going into this movie I knew that A) knowing is half the battle and B) there are ninjas. I had also heard all of the prerelease talk of the movie. You know, mainly about how bad it is, lowest test screenings of any Paramount pictures film, locking the director out of the editing room so they could attempt to salvage something once the film was done shooting. The movie’s dialogue was atrocious. After each awful line (there were plenty) was uttered, the camera had a tendency of hanging for just another moment before cutting away. The horrible one liners were bad, but to stare at the character for that extra few seconds after the line was said just made it even worse for me. GI Joe is a movie that should be based around nostalgia. I can recall many moments during the movie where TAO and I looked at each other and remembered how fond we were of early Playstation 2 era graphics. Honestly, the CG in the movie at times was just absolutely terrible. For those who have seen the movie, how did you feel the first time you saw the plane over the desert? Some of the CG looked good. Um…let’s see…I’ll post something in the comments or make an edit if I remember something. Well honestly I think it’s unfair to just say the entire movie was horrible in terms of CG when there were only specific moments I can pick out that were horrid but the rest was not memorable. So the CG was passable with a few horrible parts. The acting for the most part was pretty bad. I think this is attributable to a bad script but I don’t really know. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in my mind the best actor in the movie because I spent the entire movie wondering if Justin Long was voicing the Doctor. For those of you who don’t see the resemblance, watch/listen to the part he’s in Zack and Miri Make a Porno. He sounds the same to me. Finally, the story telling was awful. There were so many points during the movie where things just didn’t line up or make any sense. Especially towards the ending, I have a feeling that there is a completely different ending than what was shown just because it ends so anticlimactically. Duke and Ana finally catch the villains and then without a fight, they’re shown being taken prisoner. Oh and somehow the entire GI Joe fleet shows up to assist Duke and Ana also, despite the two of them taking some ridiculous route to catch the villains. How the fleet manages to arrive in a surprise fashion is way beyond me as well seeing as how I don’t like Cobra Commander would miss a gigantic submarine. A submarine that was taking on water with damaged engines about fifteen minutes prior. I have a confession. I really want movies based on toys/comics/video games to be good. So much that it’s almost like I’m overly optimistic and still trying to defend them when I know it’s a lost cause. So with GI Joe, I say that I really do feel like the movie at its basic premise had potential but throughout the development process it was just slowly hacked to death and buried. Main reason for me to buy this when it comes out: Riff Trax.
