How TV Shows and Games Enhanced and Boosted Me As A Person
I’ve always had a soft spot for TV shows and games. Whether it’s watching Sailor Moon, playing Stardew Valley, or even playing a game based off of an anime or manga – every single time I was enjoying each minute of it. It’s only now when I realized how that two helped me to become who I am today: from watching a video while simultaneously writing notes about it to drawing as I study my lessons, my skills seem to become more defined thanks to TV shows and games.
I absolutely admired the anime, Sailor Moon. Up until today, it had such a huge impact in me. As I watched episodes of it, I would draw the characters that showed up on the screen with different poses. I didn’t realize how doing so led me to be able to draw very quickly. I was able to multitask so naturally: enjoy watching my favorite TV show as I draw or imitate the art style of it.
Besides anime, I grew up watching many TV shows and movies just like any other kid. However, I was only ever exposed to shows that were in the English language. Because of this, I became a lot more comfortable and even the most proficient when I speak, listen, and write in English. This is rather beneficial for me as these days, it seems being capable of talking in English clearly is a skill itself. This is probably as to why I am so used to writing in English, evident as to how I seem so carefree when writing poems and essays.
I became more creative as I played games such as the Sims. In the Sims, you create your own characters and their houses. After that, you pretty much control their lives. First off, I loved the idea of creating something. You can probably guess that this was my favorite game growing up as I say this, and I just loved the wonderful idea of having the control of customizing a person and their house. I found many ideas as I surfed the internet and brought my own creativity into it, as well. Whether it’s choosing the perfect clothes to match the person’s personality, wallpaper that complements the floor tiles, even the furniture that would suit my characters were put in mind. I simply enjoyed how my creativity overflowed as I play the Sims, it gave me no limit on how I wanted everything to be.
Recently, I have been playing Valorant a lot. Valorant is a first-person shooting game that requires online connection. At first, I was having such a difficult time adjusting to this game. There were so many things to do at once and I wasn’t so used to the mechanics of the game at all! But slowly as I was helped by my friends, I was able to understand it much better. I realized how complex the game was, and I learned quite a lot. I learned how to communicate more properly and quickly, since fast communication in this game was valued so much. Besides this, I learned how to check many places at once, much like regulating different things in real life. You’ll have to keep your attention sharp or else you’ll find yourself easily dead in Valorant. Next was to understand when is the proper time you’ll have to use your skills. In the game, this becomes literal as different ‘agents’ have unique skills that differentiate them from one another. You are not supposed to just throw them away or else you’ll pretty much be useless; you have to know when is the right time to use them. Although most of my friends who played this game is more experienced than me, I value these lessons much more as I find it very useable in real life, as well.
Thinking back, I realize just how much TV shows and games shaped me into who I have become today. Yes, it can be from experience, but I value those two medias so much. As an introvert that enjoys my own company, I find solace and most especially lessons in TV shows and games. For me, I have become quick-witted, language proficient, creative, communicative, sharp, and resourceful by watching and playing.
