"I just wish the Duffers would have acknowledged that Billy was a bad person" hot take but did it occur to you that maybe they didn't do that because they don't think Billy is a bad person? Good people do very shitty things very often. We see it irl and in media a lot, including in Stranger Things. Like, I get why it's hard to look at a budding abuser and think "maybe this kid isn't so bad". But that's why the Duffers worked really hard to show Billy's backstory. Not just to make people sympathetic but to tell a story and make it clear that Billy wasn't a born psychopath who had gone too far to change. That he wasn't the source of the abuse and was young enough to possibly be saved before becoming his father. And to show that most of the persona he adopted was to survive a world he viewed as brutal and cold. Everyone in his family just watched him get beaten and pretended it wasn't happening. Even Max blamed Billy for his own abuse. He was completely alone. What do you expect him to do in that situation? Approach new people with trust and a big smile? Of course he's an asshole who tries to project toughness.

This is a show about uplifting the underdog. And sometimes, the underdog isn't a nice person because he's been kicked one too many times. Tough shit, he still deserves to be saved if at all possible. Billy is not a simple high school bully, he's a representation of the cycle of abuse, and that's very, very different.
