Close and Personal...

John Chapter 2

There are a couple of things in this chapter that are very significant to Jesus's ministry. One being the wedding in verses 1-12 and the other being where Jesus drove the people from the temple. A lot of what today is about comes primarily from the first, the wedding.

We see here in John chapter 2 the first of many signs or miracles that Jesus does during His ministry, beimg that He turns water into wine.

By verse 3, we see that the wine is all gone and Jesus' mother turns to Him and says "They have no wine." But this isn't a plee for Jesus to perform a miracle so the party can go on, this is a plee for something deeper.

Wine was seen as a blessing, or a gift from God, in those days. A lot different than it's viewed today. They used this as a physical representation of a spiritual blessing that indicated JOY, and they ran out. So when Jesus's mother says to Him, "They have no wine", we can interpret this as,"They have no joy,". Jesus takes somethimg ordinary(water) amd turns it into extraordinary(wine), making it even better than anythimg they've tasted. He restores their joy.

And if you read along with us, you'll see that this wasn't a huge public miracle, like the feeding of the 5000(John6), He called for a few servants that were close to lead them as to what needed to be done. And THIS is where the point for today is. Jesus's ministry was always and will always be a close, personal call because that's where the true joy is found in the first place. Relationship.

So, look at where you are right now in your life, walk, recovery, marriage, etc. Have you "ran out of wine"? Or maybe a better question to ask (depending on personal aituations) have you been depending on someone or something other than a close, private, personal relationship with Jesus to give you joy?
